A choice between two RTRs

EDIT: I found out what model the Sony was.

I have a choice between an AKAI GX-4000D and a Sony TC560D one at a local record shop. My question is: Are these both good/solid RTRs?

Hopefully, I put this in the correct section.

Lots of folks have 4000Ds and are very happy with them. The GX version has the glass/crystal heads, so there's no wear on the heads. It's a single motor machine, pretty basic, but well engineered.

As Sam says, the Sony could be anything. I'd pick a low end Akai over a low end Sony, but hard to tell without a model number.

Condition and price will also be a factor.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

I'll echo the Sony statements. Could be junk or could be great. Really can't give an answer to which is better until the model number of the Sony is given.

Thanks!

Another thing, is that the Akai is priced half of what the Sony is.

I picked up the AKAI from the cragslist lady. I did some basic cleaning and ran one of the tapes through it and it played well. For a little extra money, I got a box of 30 used tapes where 25 were the Maestro brand and the others BASF and Scotch and I think one other brand.

It was funny when I first put the tape in, because it has the capstan on it, I assumed that it was recorded at the higher speed. I start playing the tape and the Chipmunks start singing. I take the capstan off and its Nat King Cole singing to me through the headphones.

It also looks like part of the front got scratched recently. Or maybe I just didn't notice it in the picture......

My first RTR!
