A couple of Technics SU-V8

Hi all,
I have been listening music so far using a Naim NAIT 5i with Dali Oberon 7 speakers, but found this combination to be lacking in the low end so went on a quest to find a "new" amplifier which would hopefully be able to drive the speakers better.

Due to the environment I have been raised in, I have always had a soft spot for Technics amps, especially the semi-separates with large VU meters. However, as I was doing my research I ultimately kept being drawn to the Technics SU-V8 with its dual mono block setup.

I was scouring Ebay and other sources for quite a while and ultimately ended up buying 2x Technics SU-V8, one had a rather low price and the other one somewhat more expensive. I thought it would be cool to restore both to their former glory and was hoping I could restore one and listen to the other one.

The cheaper one had all sorts of muck on the outside and the inside and had a very particular smell to it (I think it was covered with tar from cigarettes), there was even a bit of rust on the chassis, the New Class A bulb had burned out, high frequency filter switch was wonky (does not have the same feel as others, does not feel "solid"). There was sound coming out of both channels, but all the switches were dirty and sometimes working, sometimes not. Volume knob was producing crackling sounds. It did not seem as if this had ever had much love, albeit I could see some re-soldering having taken place at some point and later found a couple of electrolytes that had been replaced. This one had flux all over all the PCBs. Incorrect and not enough screws holding the cover to the chassis.

The prettier and more costly specimen looked fine on the outside, produced sound in both channels, looked a bit dirty inside, but nothing compared to the other one, and seems quite original. There are still places that show its age, such as solder joints, some DC voltage at speaker terminals etc, but it works fine.

Anyways, I decided I would confront the cheaper one first, mostly due to the smell and the obvious issues it had. I dismantled it and gave it a good wash using polypropylene to get rid of the flux, tar, dust and everything else that had found its way into this amp. I re-soldered every single solder joint on all of the boards. I also decided to check all the electrolytes one by one and I found quite a few dead ones on the equalizer/voltage regulator board which is placed vertically on the right, plus one of the filter caps was leaking.

This made me think of a total recap as I did not feel I wanted to revisit and troubleshoot ancient electrolytes every once in a while. So I made a list of all the caps and decided to order 2x the amount needed (excluding the filter caps) so that I would have them at hand when I start working on the other one. This ended up being a stroke of luck as I had misread some of the caps when making my list, but was saved by the fact that I had bought more of the correct sizes, so I could still do a full recap without having to wait for another order to arrive.

I decided on Nichicon Muse series caps and for the filter caps selected 12000uF Cornell Dubilier Electronics 382LX123M080A082 (in real life they ended up being ~10800 uF) as they were the exact same dimensions, pin out etc as the originals. I also got the necessary 6,3 V, 250 mA bulb.

All the transistors seemed to be in working state, i.e not shorted.

While I was waiting for the parts to arrive, I was mostly reading this forum and trying to educate myself - this led to building a DBT.

Once the parts arrived, I replaced all the electrolytes. Cleaned all the switches and the volume knob, cleaned the heatsinks and reapplied heatsink paste (I reused the micas and made sure to check for any shorts) and ultimately put it all together again.

To my great surprise there was no smoke coming out the first time I switched it on even though I went Gung ho on this. The bulb tester seemed to indicate everything being in order.

I then proceeded with adjusting the voltage regulator, DC balance, Clamp voltage and Icq according to the service manual (with no bulb tester connected).

Things that need to be sorted still:
  • Replace the high frequency filter switch (waiting for the part to arrive)
  • Need to source some screws for the cover
  • DC voltage at speaker terminals (11 mA on the left and 45 mA on the right channel)
  • Need to sand down the rust on the back panel edge which touches the cover and spray paint it.
I am quite happy with this overall and I think it sounds quite good, definitely able to handle my speakers better and I feel I have made a good choice getting this.

I am looking for advice regarding the DC voltage on the speaker terminals. I am guessing that those voltages warrant some further work on this unit and does this usually indicate a problem with the driver transistors? The manual says Q614 (2SC2632-R), Q618 (2SC1913-Q), Q616 (2SA1124-R), Q620 (2SA913) are all drivers for the right channel. Any thoughts on how to go about this?

SU-V8 is a monster amp. They always go for good money on the Bay. Quite the score there.

That actually looks pretty good in black with the yellow New Class A light.
 
@Zether I need someone around here to go through my SU-V707. I got it with a broken speaker selector switch and it was very dirty and also missing some knobs. I fixed the broken switch and cleaned it but then had the tone switch come apart. So that does not work at all. I now use a small Technics 7-band EQ to give some smaller bookshelf speakers a small bass boost.

Frankly I am impressed with your thorough work. If you were anywhere near Colorado Springs I would hit you up because the SU-V707 seems fairly similar in some ways. It would be great to have someone actually go through it and bring it fully up to snuff.

Crazy that you scored not just one, but two of those SU-V8's... Solid amp there...
 
@SVI2004A, thanks, gave it another go and looks good for now. The VR301 and VR302 seem to have a life of their own.

@coonmanx I have never had the opportunity to listen to a SU-V707, looks like a nice amp. Hope you can get that tone switch working. I am located in Europe, Estonia, so quite a distance from Colorado Springs (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Col...400b36d18fc6270!2m2!1d24.7535747!2d59.4369608 ), 5000 miles it seems.

@coonmanx I quite like the look of the later revision of the SU-V8 as well, with the LED indicators for the rec/input/phono selectors:

I wonder what other differences we can find in these SU-V8 amps built in different years. I have not noticed any big differences just by glancing at mine, other than the heatsinks:

Zether, i recommend putting high quality trimpots such as Bourns 3386G-1-102LF for clamp and ICQ and 3386G-1-502LF for DC balance - these are sealed pots and wont have dust or contamination issues - which is critical in this area… poor contact in the pot can cause serious issues in bias… and if those original outputs fold from that itll take out hard to get diodes (2OA90 balanced pair diodes)

my V8s are now are on these pots and run SanKen 2SA1494 / 2SC3858 outputs as i will have these amps for years to come.

@SVI2004A, thanks for the hints on the trimpots, seems like these are out of stock for many distributors, so no luxury of getting both models from the same source, oh well.

I am curious about the SanKen 2SA1494 / 2SC3858 power amp transistors... Were some of them blown on yours and that led you to put these in or is there some other reason to replace the 2SD845R and 2SB755R with the aforementioned SanKens?
 
Those power transistors are my go to for any discrete amp i have - these devices are so much more robust than the standard transistors… should any adverse conditions arise these dont fail… i had a V8X bias stage go open and it simply knocks off the main fuse - where as another i had on stock ones folded from this..

i have this setup in SE-A5 SE-M100 SU-V6 SU-V8 SU-V8X SU-V85 SU-V90D SU-V900 (V9 V909 SE-A3MK2 have these in factory form)
 
@SVI2004A, your collection of Technics amplifiers is nothing short of amazing. If you do not mind sharing, do you have any favourites in the line up you have posted that you listen to more than the others?
 
I received the trimpots and installed them yesterday. Took a bit of time as I needed to coerce the leads/pins to match the holes in the PCB and the leads just barely break through the PCB when inserted.
Was perhaps overkill, but I measured the resistance of the trimpots as I extracted them from the PCB and set the new ones to match before installing them. After putting everything together again, I went through all the adjustments from the start.

I have to say it was a breeze to get the values to stick with the new ones, so it was definitely a good idea to replace the originals.
The bias seems to be stable as well - both channels are within 2 mV. Previously it seemed to magically drift to other values when I repeated the measurements the next day, does not seem to be doing that anymore.

Oh poo… I must have muddled that up… the V8X uses those trimpots

3362P-1-102 Would have been more likely to be a drop in for the V8

I just bought in 30 pairs of 2SA1494/2SC3858 power transistors from an authorised SanKen supplier…so I will be doing a few more builds soon…

I prefer new class A myself… much more unstrangled than the class AA - I find the computer drive era particularly good… moreso to do with the stabistor loaded output stage rather than an ICQ controller-

it’s a tough call to pick a fave integrated in that lineup… harder to pick than a broken nose… these are all stellar performers…

The A3MK2 however is in a league of its own.
 
Too right Avionic… makes me wonder why one side is harder to find than the other…. Same w/ A1295/C3264

I will buy in more when I can… want to keep doing up a few amps to my LV2 spec

This set sot SU-V8X SE-A5MK2 SE-A70 (higher wattage emitter resistors - SanKen outputs - 12,000uf caps - bias trimpots (Bourns Sealed) and higher current rectifier diodes)
 
I had the V6 for a while, absolutely incredible phono stage (with MC option built in) not sure if that is shared with the V8 or not.
V8 has the MC option built in as well, however the layout of the phono stage is different (the components that are used seem to be the same however)
 
Yesterday took the time to get rid of the rust on the back panel edge. There was more rust than I expected. I used a 180 grit sandpaper and after that used a iron brush end on my Dremel to polish it. As usual, I forgot to make pictures of every step, but here are some from the process:
