A horn design using Fusion 360

@mboxler , thank You! That looks like it could be pretty good if you speak "Go to GitHub and install it your self". I'm gonna have to brush up! Might give it a try soon.

Tractrix curves are not elliptic nor round and are superior to anything else I have tried.
Tractrix horns do sound nice for sure.

Traditionally, tractrix horns were round because the tractrix curve was revolved about a center axis. However, the tractrix equation defines the flare (the rate of expansion), not the cross-sectional shape itself. The same tractrix expansion can be applied to circular, elliptical, or rectangular cross sections, provided the expansion follows the tractrix flare. The final performance still depends on the overall geometry and should be verified by measurement.
 
Nothing like being able to do things yourself from design to part. I know someone who is doing plastic deposition horns and there are a lot of variables that go into the medium used to how hot the deposit is and stock diameter. He has not run into the buzzing problem yet but I figure that is the drawback to these.
Given your CNC background, I think you would pick up 3D printing very quickly. Being able to go from CAD to a finished product in a few hours is a lot of fun.

Prototyping is fast and inexpensive. I have run into unwanted resonances on some prototypes, but not buzzing. Numerous walls, gussets, and sufficient infill combined with wall thickness keeps the vibrations under control in my experience.

Depending on the process, either the casting pattern or even the investment mold itself can be 3D printed. The most common approach is to 3D print the burn-out pattern and then use it in the standard investment casting process.
 
Surely there's a simulator out there that will optimize the curve for a given compression driver. You shouldn't have to create an infinite number of prototype horns and then test all of them to see which works best.
Looking at some of this again today. I am thinking that these deposited items just might have too much flex built in. I have seen numerous damaged speakers from gorillas that love to over torque things. I can see screws being to tight and material around the screw heads deflecting up a bit being a possible cause of buzz.

This is why I'm trying to learn BEM solving tools, like AKABAK. I purchased a horn plan from Troy Crowe, turned it into a surface, and created a mesh file.
I went to read up on these two things and decided I am happy to forego the dubious pleasure of learning more software. Why are you fiddling with mesh files anyway? Along with point clouds they have a reputation for making life difficult.

Oh FFS. In order to get sued, someone with a financial interest in the design would have to be trolling forums like this looking for anyone who is violating their patent. What do you suppose the odds of that are? I think you're more likely to be killed by a lightning strike. You would no doubt receive a cease and desist letter from a lawyer before anyone filed a law suit.

Don't worry about patents unless you're trying to sell the stuff you extract from someone's patent, and even then I think they have to prove financial harm as a result of your activity. The patent document itself discloses the shape of the horn for everyone to see, as does the product itself.

I'm pretty sure anyone filing for a patent on a horn is going to have some engineering justification for the specific shape which would be the real IP of the patent. You're just using ellipses to make something that resembles a properly designed horn.

I design and 3D print stuff all the time for the last 14 years or so. I have never once concerned myself with patents, though I have probably violated a few during that time- but how would I know? If you had to worry about patent violations every time you designed anything, you'd spend all your time doing patent searches and no time designing anything. Forget about patents, except as a source of information/inspiration. That's what the patent documentation is for.

When I designed and built my 3D printers, they had heated chambers before the Stratasys patent on heated chambers for 3D printers expired. I didn't care about their patent. I needed a printer that would print ABS without warping or delaminating, and I sure wasn't going to buy one from Stratasys, so I built it. And it worked. And I posted my design info on line. Patents schmatents.

Be careful when you tie your shoes, someone may have a patent on the knot you're about to use, and they might sue you!

They start with a cease and desist. No one is “living in fear”, just living with an awareness that they’re territorial.

Also, printing for personal use and mass production are not treated the same.

They also protect their trademarks.

I have personally not seen an American company (based outside of the northeast) treat its customers so poorly. I'm speaking here in several dimensions.

I don't believe it was that way 15-20 years ago--before AudioVox. Now, I believe that the product design engineers that work for what is left of the company would be better off working for someone else--leaving the current company in the dust to rot. It certainly wouldn't make any difference in terms of parts or customer service, and would stop the really bad product engineering (in terms of electronics reliability failures) that they have apparently adopted since PWK left the helm of the company ~40+ years ago.
