yes, this should be a thread about "almost"...
A couple of years ago I see an ad on CL for a "Marantz Musical amplifier" listed for $125. I open up the listing and see what is obviously (to me) the rear end of a Marantz 8B. The real kicker is included in the sale were a pair of "large Altec speakers" and a "Thorens turntable". :sigh:
Needless to say I emailed the seller but never heard back.

they were a pile of crap you had a lucky escape .. that's my theory when this sort of thing happens ..plus you may just get an unexpected bill for $100 soon so its not too bad is it ?

Reminds me though that last week my wife mentions to me she was at a church sale Friday morning and there was a stack of audio stuff...Martenz or Maraz or something...she thought about calling me at work but she doesn't like to interrupt. I start questioning her and pulling up pictures of gear. As she sees the Marantz name plate then she's sure that's what it was. I try to narrow it down to which vintage. She says they looked 'industrial', maybe 60s or 70s, she says. Did it looked old enough for tubes? Yes old enough but she doesn't know if it they had or not. She describes the color, at first I think it's the champagne color and show her some of those...but no she says they were beige or something close, an no wood case. I couldn't any pictures online that fit the bill. Of course we went back the next morning to see if they happen to be there but no, long gone. She said stack, maybe 4 pieces of equipment and a pair of tall but not skinny speakers. At this point I just want to know what it might have been. Did Marantz make anything painted beige? I'm beginning to doubt it was Marantz.

I was at an estate sale in Glencoe, IL (read very upscale). I was poking around a built-in book case and found a "hidden" panel. Inside were 2 8Bs which were part of an installed system. They were ablsolutely mint.
I asked the person running the sale if the 8bs were for sale. She said she would check and took my name and number (this was in the pre-cellphone days). Of course a few others expressed an interest and left their names as well.
I got home a few hours later and there was a message on my machine saying they since she couldn't reach me, she sold the "speakers" to someone else for $100 each.
Silver lining: I did pick up a very nice McIntosh MC-240 a few years later for $30.
Yeah I've had my special moments. I bought the Sansui 1000A I use now at an estate sale. It was with some Coral speakers, an Akai RtR and a bunch of other stuff like microphones and tapes. All for 40 bucks. Sold the metal reel from the Akai for 40 bucks so the rest was free.
Just to put it in perspective:
About two years ago, a guy I know was 10 minutes late, for getting what turned out to be a '68 GT500KR Mustang with 428 SCJ, for $2000. Yeah, it needed some body work (rust), but that's about all that was wrong with it...
And he usually read the online version of Hemmings Motor News, about a half hour earlier in the day, than he did, THAT ONE DAY.

Hey, I consider the Dynaco SCA-35 I got on Barter Town for $200 to be a real score -- of course I put another couple hundred bucks and many hours of work into it, but now I have a better than new amp that I would be happy with for the rest of my days. Listening to vinyl through that amp is something I can do for hours on end. Combine those Z-565 output transformers with EL84s, and you have a very sweet sounding amp.
Then there are the speakers I use with it -- B&W DM602s that I got at a community thrift sale for $9. At that same sale, I got 6-eye mono copies of Kind of Blue and Time Out for 25 cents each. Then again, I have done a pro bono guitar performance for that sale every year for the last 10 years. Kind of works out.
