A Moment Of Silence...Loran-C Is No Longer

I've been to the Loran C site at Attu island (twice!) pictured in the CNN article. It is the last island in the Aleutian chain; we are talking the end of the world. Well, at least the U.S. version of it. I think 5--7 Coast Guard personnel manned it.

I was on my way to be stationed at Shemya A.F.B as a civilian contractor in the mid-'70s. We used the Loran C as a timing reference -- and wow did that signal come jacking in from just a few miles away. For more on Shemya, see: http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/facility/shemya.htm) The plane (Lockheed Electra) would first fly to Attu to deliver mail, etc. to the Loran C people, and then backtrack toward Anchorage to land at Shemya. The guys at Attu were REALLY happy to see that Reeves Aleutian Airlines Electra land and talk to its passengers. They used to come to Shemya for R&R, which should tell you a little about their state of mind.

Attu was contested during WWII; the Japanese occupied it and it was a difficult and bloody campaign for the U.S. to retake it -- basically had to kill all the enemy. See: http://www.hlswilliwaw.com/aleutians/attu-homepage.htm
