ADC cartridge identification

Info from the seller:

Molded into stylus case " ADC VLM MKIIV" also inscribed " made in USA"
Thanks,
Ed

MKIIV? i think it's a mistake and will order know.

Since There is no Roman numeral written as IIV (which would be 3, or III), I suspect you may be right. :)

8Hz is okay, as is anything between 8 and 11Hz (some sources say 7 to 12Hz). Did you go beyond 8Hz in search of a resonance peak? Sometimes (ususlly?) the resonance you observe at, say, 8Hz will disappear as you go up the ladder. The point at which the oscillation of the stylus is greatest is the resonance peak. You'll probably want to check again when you install the new stylus.

To revive a sorta old thread - I'm putting together an order for some styli from JICO and have a choice of 2 styli for my old ADC (a 950 - which wualta has identified as likely an early (MkI) variant). They list a QLM36 and an XLM, both made by ADC. I am leaning toward the QLM36, since the XLM lists fitment for many cartridges from later series. If anyone could offer their advice/opinion, it would be greatly appreciated. Speaking of appreciated, I have been corresponding with Seth from JICO and he has been extremely helpful.

Is your cartridge perhaps a 95QE? The tail on the Q is easy to miss.

Thank you for raising that issue! After looking more closely, it is in fact a 95QE. It was bought back in the '60's, along with my first AR XA table, at Korvettes in NYC. Now the question is, what is the correct stylus for the 95QE?

More. So, back at the JICO site, and they list a QLM32MK3E as the replacement stylus for the 95QE. Now the question becomes, what would be the best sounding stylus for the 95QE body.

LarryRS

The 95QE is a private label version of the QLM32 and, as such, that stylus, the RSQ32 - Replacement Stylus Qlm32 - would duplicate what the cartridge originally came with. That being said the RSQ32 is a "fat" 0.4 x 0.7 mil elliptical that tracks fairly heavily, between 2.0 and 4.0 grams. JICO ellipticals are all 0.3 x 0.7 mill ellipticals which replicates the best of the original QLM styli so that's what you'd get if you ordered the RSQ32 from them. And I believe, but can't confirm, that the recommended tracking force for the JICO is substantially lower, around 1.0 to 2.0 grams. JICO used to publish tracking forces on their domestic web site but, at least for the RSQ32, they no longer do. So, that would be my tentative recommendation. The Early XLM styli are okay from an electrical standpoint but they've become very scarce and very expensive and are appropriate for only VERY light tonearms.

There's something a little off there. Both part numbers are descriptive of the same thing so I'm wondering where the difference lies. The QLM styli were made without the flip down stylus guard. It doesn't make a huge difference functionally, really none if everything else is the same as the QLM32MK3E that Seth recommended. Since all JICO ellipticals are 0.3 x 0.7 mil and since (I'll bet) both use the same cantilever and diamond, I'd want to know hoe JICO explains the rather large price difference. The $56 price for the RSQ32 is pretty typical of JICO ellipticals. On the other hand, the $26 price for the QLM36MK3E is low, even for conical styli.

My best answer, one that I've used many times, is "I dunno!". But if $26 gets me the same thing as $56, I'm going for the $26.

Seth will be able to answer the question for you. I'd ask him if it were me trying to decide.

Today i've got a new ADC system without stylus from japan. It was advertised as MK II. With your help, i saw the holes instead of slots. I bought it, to see if it is really a MK III. Measurement is at +-560mH so i'm pretty shure it is a MK III and will fit my MK II improved stylus.
