ADS, aDs, a/d/s/ Merit Badges

Those that follow many of the ads threads here have maybe read about merit badges for ownership or whatever. there was even a merit badge suggested, but it was just a generic looking woofer in typical Boy Scout merit badge stitched fashion.

Just so we can have fun, let's put together a list of merit badges that one could earn based on ownership or other criteria that would prove some kind of ADS, a/d/s/, aDs-ness. I have put together a quick list of possible merit badges and would welcome input on more or fewer badges and especially the work needed to earn said badges. For example, just grabbing a pair of speakers from CL and flipping them shouldn't give much in the way of credit for the badge associated with that model speaker. Buying and holding and then moving up the line and selling would count.

But I don't want to set the rules or determine the badges available, this is just a start of the different badges that may make the final cut. We also need to know what would be needed to earn the badge.

Let those recommendations roll in.

So, a serious ADS fetishest would have their left pec covered in badges like George Patton? It sounds more entertaining than my computerized point system, but where would one strut around with their badges on?
Or what it be more like a boy scout/cub scout shirt thing, but again, where do you wear it?
 
The more I think of it, the more I like the point system/registry. It could all be housed in a website that could dynamically keep track of the ranking. Members could have pics there, and although it would take work to do it, the logistics would be easier than purchasing and distributing merit badges.

I made a few of the first badges, more for fun, for those who bought their first ADS's, and the 2nd badge more of an ADS royalty idea based on length of ownership, the models, and number in the collection. Will thought to expand the idea, which I like.
I think the boyscout badge (virtual electronic) thing is what was in mind at the onset. I can continue to do the graphics and badge design ideas for the various categories and ideas welcome.

Salad Bar or chest candy as the military ribbons are called or the BS sash with the merit badge patches on them. Either way, something colorful to enjoy. As to where you can use such a thing, any audio get together, there are some all over the country. See the Events & Happenings forum.

But I like the idea of making it electronic and not having to wear anything. Easy to just drop in and check out what is going on and with that secret club handshake and password, no one but those involved would be outted/embarassed to find their name in lights...ah ADS accomplishments in Ribbons or Badges/Patches.
 
We can distribute the Badges at our next gathering in Vegas (I know we was just there not that long ago but some/many members have a gambling addiction)(that want to win their money back or so they say)

ADS-fests should probably take place in more low-brow, decadent locals, and not family theme parks like Las Vegas. You won't find many chick ADS enthusiasts, so why not have the conventions in areas more prone to car races, gun ranges, steak houses and divorcees in the dumpster out back?
"Hey baby, see this badge? That's right, I have a pair of L-1530's with a fresh Richard So rebuild. Do you have a car?"
 
I was thinking he just described Las Vegas...car races, gun ranges, steak houses and divorcees, add in the NFL and a number of other draws for males and you have Las Vegas.
 
I'm holding out for the prototype badge... the best part of that, is I think I'd enjoy losing it to someone else just for the experience of learning about some more one-off pieces that were saved along the way.

No Vegas for me though; that disease-festering pool of pus in the desert has seen the last of me, can't afford to lose another 4 months of my life recovering from the crud that gets passed around that town during CES, and I don't look good in a plastic bubble (or w/o it either, but hey).

OK! Canceled the Booking at Vegas, Since daytona beach is 15 min from me we can have a choice beach side or next to the race track your pick, We also have all these camp grounds with gun ranges, I'm sure we can book during non bike week times, or spring break, or daytona race week, we can Start a ADS week!! how about that?
 
How about, "what's your soft dome count"? That is sure to confuse and alarm most folks. I think I am at 22.

We have car races and guns up here in VT, but more tofu joints than steak houses. In looking at where folks on the thread are from, we could not be much more scattered and still be in the lower 48. I am thinking ADS week will have to be through Facetime.
 
Having owned and heard most of the ads lineup I'd have to say it was more difficult to get the electronics "badge" necessary for the best sound from my ADS's.
 
15 domes I think at last count. I had a warranty repair on a 206-0101 but bought a new one to keep the speaker in play. The replacement, never used, is still sitting in the Styrofoam package in a drawer.

Speaker electronics might be hard to find but how much of the atelier gear is still out there...working? I don't know much about it.

How does one get an invitation? Would a "sponsor" make a recommendation to a "committee" that would render a decision? That sounds too unAmerican to me. Everyone with an ADS speaker should be in the club and their ranking should be merit based. I stand by my system.
The real stickler that could possibly reveal favoritism and generate castes would be the assigning of points to the various models.
 
I talked to my record shop buddy today while I was in Datona and turns out he Worked for ADS back in the 80's. SO i had him bring up the 1230's on the computer and he looked at them and then proceeded to tell me he worked on the line building them and went into great detail on how they were made. The Cab's were made by a subcontractor and when they got the cabs in they had to work on sealing the cabs and they put a bit of time making sure the cabs were sealed. we then went over how it would be good to add some bracing inside the upper and lower parts of the chambers, reconfirm the seals through each cab and for the chamber divider inside also. he went on to say there was one guy at the end of the line who tested each and every speaker and if they failed they had to go back and work on sealing the cab some more. (they could have used better build quality for the cab by the contractor) he talked about how well made the 1230 cab is But, there is a BUT!!! the BUT is the woofer. we knows the strength and weakness of the woofer and proceeded to use a spare woofer he had laying around (my god its a 30 year old junk pile there) and demonstrated how the rubber surround on the woofer is soo compliant that when you turn up the volume that the cab works so well that it forces the woofer cone to rock and warp and causes to voice coils to move around. he went into what is needed is a thicker by a little bit spider because that's all that is keeping the cone compliant in place. SO every one who has the bigger than book shelf speaker has this known issue but what lines of speakers and how the woofer works in each one is different, you know its happening on sub bass at high volume when the cone starts misbehaving and you can hear it. I do on mine the Spiders get weak over time.
Its very important we work on sealing our ADS cabs!
Sent off a email to RichardSo on this waiting to hear what he has to say, I might try to get my guy here to comment on this also we will see.
over all the ADS speaker is for a time in its production a very well made speaker well thought out and had quality people working at key points in the line who added their own special talents for make the sound just right, example some lady who did it just right on voice coils worked on this coil and made it just right and so on through out assembly. every speaker was tested and only passed when it was just right. the cross overs were well made (my buddy then went off on a tangent on Canton speaker crossovers) apparently they are very well made.
So While I was at Daytona today stopped at the beach for some of this
