ADS, aDs, a/d/s/ Merit Badges

Everyone is a member, just like Boy Scouts but not everyone has the merit badge. I know I have a dozen Audio inspired merit badges but not a one of them is an ADS badge as these have not been decided, determined or made up, yet. Since we don't have a rank associated with the badges and haven't added acquiring badges as a necessary step to attain a certain rank as is done in scouts, we are all equal standing members of the organization. Now if one were to wear his merit badges to an event, there would be something there but I don't know what, exactly.

SO i had him bring up the 1230's on the computer and he looked at them and then proceeded to tell me he worked on the line building them and went into great detail on how they were made. The Cab's were made by a subcontractor and when they got the cabs in they had to work on sealing the cabs and they put a bit of time making sure the cabs were sealed. we then went over how it would be good to add some bracing inside the upper and lower parts of the chambers, reconfirm the seals through each cab and for the chamber divider inside also. he went on to say there was one guy at the end of the line who tested each and every speaker and if they failed they had to go back and work on sealing the cab some more. (they could have used better build quality for the cab by the contractor) he talked about how well made the 1230 cab is But, there is a BUT!!! the BUT is the woofer. we knows the strength and weakness of the woofer and proceeded to use a spare woofer he had laying around (my god its a 30 year old junk pile there) and demonstrated how the rubber surround on the woofer is soo compliant that when you turn up the volume that the cab works so well that it forces the woofer cone to rock and warp and causes to voice coils to move around. he went into what is needed is a thicker by a little bit spider because that's all that is keeping the cone compliant in place. SO every one who has the bigger than book shelf speaker has this known issue but what lines of speakers and how the woofer works in each one is different, you know its happening on sub bass at high volume when the cone starts misbehaving and you can hear it. I do on mine the Spiders get weak over time.
Its very important we work on sealing our ADS cabs!

over all the ADS speaker is for a time in its production a very well made speaker well thought out and had quality people working at key points in the line who added their own special talents for make the sound just right, example some lady who did it just right on voice coils worked on this coil and made it just right and so on through out assembly. every speaker was tested and only passed when it was just right. the cross overs were well made (my buddy then went off on a tangent on Canton speaker crossovers) apparently they are very well made.

I will always contend that speakers are not an aquarium and sealing to that level, although a relatively harmless pursuit, is way overrated.
I say "relatively" harmless as anyone who's ever removed an ADS tweeter or midrange that's been sitting on that goop they applied 40 years ago will testify that it's not totally harmless. The fact that ADS used nut plates with machine screws and a good milled mounting flange is more than adequate.
I resealed with a well made gasket and no goop and I defy anyone to hear or measure a difference between that and the same with goop.
NOTE; The "goop" I used inside of my ADS cabinetry was for the sake of acoustical damping.

To quote a line from the movie Blazing Saddles, WE DONT NEED NO STINKING BADGES! And surely I jest :-) And don't call me Shirley!!!!!! Another movie line stolen by me. Anyway currently I have 28 domes in the house, but who's counting? :-) :-) :-) :-) :-). You guys lead and we shall follow oh grand poobahs. (Did I spell that right?) Y'all get the drift. Will D.
 
Maybe Soundmotor can chime in here: Is there a list of ADS models which contain the numbers of each model manufactured and their suggested retail price? That would go a long way in determining a point system. For example, part of the formula could contain the suggested retail value of a give model in cents, divided by the number of models produced. This would favor heavily the L-2030, as it should, but the potential for something like a rare, comparatively cheap L-300 outranking an L-1230 would be offset by a size number inserted into the overall formula that would give greater weight potential to larger speakers. If you worked on the design staff for ADS back in the 70's and own a pair of 2030's of which your are the original purchaser, your ranking would be pretty damn high.

If that was me, I'd insist you all call me Your Highness, sit around the round table and praise me and how you all love listening to my 2030's while the cameras are rolling!
 
Thats a interesting seal job there porkloin for sure, good job. since I only have a pair of err 4 domes I try to compensate with useful information or bring strippers to the Club meetings, where is my merit badge!

Couple things... first, no - there is no comprehensive documentation of the production info by model that was asked about above. As Soundmotor has mentioned a few times, most of that was lost when the company relocated from MA to AZ. I can confirm it's not in what we have left here at Directed, either.

Second, woo-hoo! If you include dome counts as a badge category, means I can bring the spare parts stash into play. :thumbsup: :banana::banana::banana:

Yes, I have spare domes too, just one set of 4 (two tweets and two mids). That was the idea, to include those plus car domes, etc. The 2030s would kick ass in this department. I was inspired by something I heard on the radio once where they were discussing cylinder counts, as in how many internal combustion engine cylinders do you own? I am too embarrassed to admit my count on this. Also do not want to derail the thread!

OP here so this can't be a derail, but I remember those discussions of cylinder count.

Folks, we are not trying to find a winner. We are just doing merit badges so others can see the dedication or be craving some badges themselves or whatever reason the military and boy scouts provide badges. The military salad bar is a set of participation ribbons but also includes accomplishments. The boy scouts is accomplishments. We should hold to these ideas, accomplishments.
 
Search and locate badge needs to be in there... should include some threshold for # of road trips to retrieve ADS speakers, bonus for mileage logged.

Should mention that I might have been the oldest tenderfoot in history when was in the Scouts as a kid - learned plenty and enjoyed the hiking/camping etc. but chasing merit badges wasn't in my DNA. So, this is mostly just an entertaining discussion from my POV, no need for actual flair if you take my meaning.
