They could be made from Color-Thru MDF so there's minimal finishing. A few coats of lacquer or urethane to finish.

I just can't force myself to like fiberboard, even if it comes in pretty colors.

Wires exited through the bottom hole and space at the bottom rear of the bases like the pic posted earlier.
