ADS Speakers

Mix n' Match speakers for my little office system are a pair of ADS L300 with a Design Acoustics LF20 passive sub-woofer. The mid & treble response is great as well as the soundstage. With the added bass reinforcement they sure sound like a much bigger system. They're not going anywhere, soon.

Believe those are either CM5's or CM6's. If the woofer is a 5.25" (130mm) driver, it's a CM5. If it's bigger than that, it's a CM6.

The cabinets are made froma very heavy, very inert composite resin of some kind.

Great little speakers...

John

Uhmmm.... taking some lessons from the KEF 105/107 heads! Ok, ok, I admit I am a bit of a KEF-head!

Serious, take an L810 and perch these on top, I bet you'd have the makings of a 105/2! ;)

Sweet!

Hey John, thanks for the info. I did a little research and found an ebay ad for what I think is the exact model of those that I have, CM5s. A couple of interesting differences from mine, namely the labelling which doesn't have CM5 on it, and the position of the terminals, red and black, is reversed. I can't read the country of manufacture on the label of the ebay ad, but am wondering if they might have been made in a country other than Germany. 'Concrete composite'!!??, no wonder they're so heavy. Richard

Those are very nice little speaks I bet! My little L300 C's are truly the best small speaks I have ever had.

Could be a related model, I am a little weak on that period of a/d/s/ model history. For sure they have the industrial design of the CM5 though. If you want to pull the drivers & get part numbers off the magnets, we can cross-index them with the replacement parts manual - that might confirm the CM5 ID or point to something else.

Looking for a/d/s speaker brackets

Hey folks, looking for some outdoor brackets for some a/d/s L310AWs. Any ideas? I have already talked with Rom So. Also, anybody know where I might be able to get specs on these speakers, that include the mounting screw thread sizes? Any help appreciated

The L300 and L400 I have use 1/4"-20 thread, same as a standard camera tripod.

Do you need the brackets to be white or black?

R.I.P. a/d/s

While searching for brackets, talked to a tech at DEI, who said a/d/s was disposed of, and no longer exists as an entity. He said they had no more parts at the warehouse, and didn't know any current source. Oh well, RIP.
But, there are these guys: http://www.lightav.com/home/ads/custom.html I'm going to call them to see what's up.

As for driver parts...

You're in luck if you speak German!
Things like cones, spiders, baskets, dust caps, pole pieces, lead wire, terminals, and surrounds seem to be of proprietary German design by Dr. Kurt Muller, much like those of not only ADS, but Canton, Braun, Acron, MB Quart, Visonik, Heco, Grundig, Etc. They are all alike.

ADS lives in our hearts. :tresbon:

The L310W's are 100% offshore assembly, and do not use SAE hardware, unlike the older US-built models you mentioned. It'll be the nearest metric equivalent, probably 6mm/.125 or something like that. Might be an M5 too, I'll try and check a pair tonight.

The tech was incorrect, the brand was not disposed of, just not active these days.

John, thanks again for the help, but I wanted to give you a litlle heads up. You may know this, but may not. The L310AWs, that I need brackets for, have a case completely different from the L310Ws. I found the user manual for the L310Ws http://www.directed.com/guides/manuals/og/ads-home/G39710-15-20-25_10-04.pdf and it has holes on the top and bottom with a knob that screws on the top. The L310AWs(and I can't find the user manual) have only three small threaded holes on the back in a triangle configutration. Also, they were made in the USA. I'd post a picture, but I just sold the speakers, and am trying to find the brackets for the buyer.

Ah, ok - I remember those. Funky solution with L-brackets threaded to the back wrapping the top and bottom that the U bracket then connects to. They did it to get rid of the threaded holes in the cabs, because it looked sexier that way, but what a PITA that bracket assembly was.

Funny, I was thinking of that version when I saw your reference to the 1/8" hole but then I looked at the manuals for the L310w and talked myself out of that being the right direction.

I was also ignoring the "A" in your model reference, people get that stuff mixed up all the time. You seen one L300/300c/310/310AW/310, you've seen them all... not!

Not sure if I have any parts from that series stashed or not, but I'll take a look.

Checked out this site, which claims to be an authorized ADS dealer. Talked to a guy named Jerry, the creator. He said that the site was way old, that he put so much effort into it that he couldn't bear to take it down, and it hasn't been touched for about 5 years. He had bought a bunch of the stuff that's listed on it for pennies on the dollar, probably at a time when DEI was just dumping it. He seems like a very cool guy--I had an interesting talk with him about the electronics biz--and still sells stuff, but nothing related to ADS.

I've got two sets of the bracket kits for these, but both are black. The kit has the ADST part number marked on it and is dated 2000, which is right for the AW version.

The threaded studs that stick out of the L-brackets that engage the large thumbscrews (which are actually nuts, not screws) are 1/4-20 SAE, but the bolts that hold the brackets to the rear of the cabinet are M5 x .8mm and 10mm length (the threaded area). I assume that means the guys that were making the aluminum cabinets in Taiwan for ADST at the time went with metric threading for the holes on the rear of the cabinet, and the plastic thumb-nuts and L-brackets got sourced somewhere in the US (or one was so the other had to match).

Typical f'd up hardware kit for this period of a/d/s/ history.

John

Hey John, my guy is cool with the black brackets. I'm attaching a pic of the speaker back for your reference.

Thanks - that clarifies the small screw count, which (I thought) was four. One per L-bracket, two per speaker, total of 4 in the kit.

They can always paint the L-brackets and U-brackets white, even the knobs I suppose. The small screws for the back of the cabinets looked like stainless to me so they'll look ok on a white cabinet/bracket.
