Advent Loudspeakers (smaller advent)

Hi folks,

Does anyone have a good DIY that gives instructions on rebuilding the crossovers for a small advent speakers?
Any help would be appreciated .

There are 2 capacitors, 1 resistor and 1 coil in each crossover. All you need to concern yourself with is the capacitors. They are 4 and 8 microfarad. I suggest you get new film caps (Dayton has economical ones). They have a 4 microfarad and an 8.2 microfarad. The 8.2 will work fine. The voltage rating on the film caps will be higher than on the original caps and is also fine.
Cut the wire leads close to each capacitor body and attach the new caps to the wire leads that are left from each capacitor and solder. I don't recommend twist nuts. Soldering is best.

Clarity CSA caps work well in Advents. The 250V version is all you need. You should change the resistor as well. Mills is my choice.

Id replace the resistors too as long as you're in there. I had some bad ones in some NLA I recapped. Dayton caps and resistors are a great economical choice. I've used nicer clarity caps and mills resistors as well with good success but the costs add up quickly!

The Smaller Advent was released with two different tweeters, and this model has several versions of crossover, but as Carl has already stated, they all have 2 cap, 1 res and 1 coil. So before you place an order for the caps, open yours up and confirm the actual cap values needed for replacement. Early (green tweeter) speakers had fiberglass fill; later (orange tweet) had blocks of foam fill.

bamark's pic (8 and 16uF caps) looks just like the x-o's from my early Smaller Advents (1972) with green tweeter, and spkrdtr's description (4 and 8uF caps) is consistent with many of the later red tweeter versions.

Sometime in 1975, Advent started putting the same tweeter into the Smaller Advent as in the original (large) Advent instead of the tweeter with a smaller magnet (3" square instead of 2.5" square). They compensated to match the efficiency with the woofer with a crossover change.

That's the reason for different capacitor configurations. Determine which Smaller Advent version you have first by looking at the crossover components as mentioned.

A green tweeter does not necessarily mean an early version of the speaker. Usually but not always, especially if the speaker was made in 1975.

Looks like mine were replaced before I got them. The caps. look different. I'll post a pic. Anyway, thanks for all the help. At least now I'm confident about replacing the crossovers if needed. Buying another set of Advents tomorrow. They're great speakers.

Here is a pic of the crossovers.. My speakers have the green fried egg tweeters

You have a new air core coil - a good thing if it was spec'd correctly by whomever did the upgrade. Both mH and DCR ohms should match the original coil as closely as possible.
You also have a single film cap. Looks like the cap might be a 12 uF cap, 5%. The upgrader decided to go with a 1st order HP on the tweeter.
Certainly, this scenario is a perfect example for recappers to open up their purchases to see exactly what they have before rushing to buy parts based on schematics that may ok for OEM XO installs, but not so much for upgraded stuff bought from 2nd and 3rd hand owners.

How do you like the sound?

The sound from both speakers was fantastic !! they are were my favorite speakers until my tweeter went bad ..
I don't know if it's directly related to the crossover change or not ..a wire on the green tweeter came loose from the driver. It is unrepairable because it extends into the green paper ..

With Smaller Advents, the important consideration is the magnet size on the tweeter rather than the cone color. That is what determines which crossover parts should be installed.

Yup, if the magnet is 2.5" square, the crossover needs to have the early configuration. If the magnet is 3" square, the crossover needs to have the later configuration. I have an explanation for the apparent inconsistencies regarding the green cones, which I have written about in other posts, but I don't think many people have confidence in my explanation. I do, however, :D

Do some of the others base the crossovers on the tweeter color instead of magnet size? Also, do you have the schematic for the 3" magnet size?
