After pressing "start" needle moves AWAY from turntable instead of toward the record!

Just bought a record player because I want to preserve the history and culture that is quickly being erased from society.

Well, in the store, it worked fine. Put the record on, hit "Auto" and then the record drops and the needle automatically moves over to it and starts playing the track.

Nothing has been shaken, bumped or pressed so there should not be a single issue but it's now plugged in at home and does not function at all like it did in the store. Hitting "Auto" moves the needle away from the turntable, then it pauses a moment, hovers over the play buttons and slams down on top of the switch that says "Stop - Start - Auto."

What is causing this?

Hello... what I see on the front is "Philips Cassette - AM/FM Stereo Compact System" and the back says "Series No. 71058"
 
Sounds like something got messed up in transport. You’ll probably have to take some things apart to figure it out.
If it were an older Dual model, I’d guess that the “steuerpimpel” (small part that moves the tonearm) was knackered. Hard to guess on yours though. It’s probably not an adjustment or setting.
 
Being an "all in one unit" it's got a lot going on underneath so I probably wouldn't try and fix it myself. If it were me I would
take it back to where I bought it and see if it works there. If it doesn't let them try and figure out what's up with it.
Then if it doesn't work for them either they could take it back and give ya something else in return that does work.
Since you just bought it and all.:dunno:
It should have some sort of warranty.

Agree here. I don't see spending good money on repair will further your target of... "I want to preserve the history and culture that is quickly being erased from society."
 
Looks like a BSR changer. Probably sticky lube if its like every other record changer I've dealt with. They're really not that difficult but it usually involves taking a lot of stuff apart, cleaning it, and putting it back together in exactly the right order. If that doesn't sound like fun, don't mess with it.
 
First, be sure to clean out all the old sticky grease and relubricate the mechanism, as gadget73 said. Look up videos on how to restore BSR record changers if you need help.

Then, there are also screws to adjust the position the tonearm sets down at the beginning of a record and then the position it returns to the tonearm rest when it's done playing. Maybe one or both of these got knocked out of adjustment.

Also make sure the record size selector is properly engaged in the desired position (12", 10", or 7").
 
That knob marked 2-4-6 looks like it might be anti-skate. Try turning it down to 2, and see if there is any change in behaviour.
 
There were a number of changers that do, as a part of their cycle, move out slightly, as against a internal reference stop, before they proceed to set down in the correct starting groove.

Do not remember if a very entry level BSR had that motion but if the needle sets down in the correct starting groove leave it be.
 
As mentioned, it is a lower cost unit from it's day. Unfortunately, probably not something most of us have played much with here. It does have a MM cartridge though, which is a good thing. So a couple ideas...

It probably is in need of a re-lube. The grease that they used eventually turns rock hard. It's possible that maybe it got stuck between cycles, or something. You might be able to free it up... I would try moving the record size lever a couple times and try again. (If you have to force anything, I wouldn't do that.) If that doesn't work, but it will still manually play, push the arm inward to the point that it will want to return and restart. That might help it complete the return cycle. Even if a reset of sorts fixes it now, there's no guarantee that it won't happen again if the lube is bad.

Also, if the center spindle is removable, maybe make sure it is inserted fully. If the platter stops spinning, or spins slow during automation, the idler wheel is slipping and may need replacement.
 
Move the size selector slide switch (12, 10 ,7) back and forth a couple of times and then make sure it is firmly seated in the 12" position.
 
Hi everyone, I appreciate the replies.

I brought it back to the store, they charge me $40 to repair it and now the arm's auto-function works fine.

I have a few threads going because I am DESPERATE!

Anyway, what's happening is that the song is now playing out of the stylus (which is brand new - part of the $40 repair) and the sound from the speakers is very high pitched.
It's set to 12 - 33 and everything sounds like Alvin & the Chipmunks along with this new issue of the song skipping back and forth like crazy. It's not even listenable but the store owner says it's fine because he can see it spinning so, there's that.
