So much for AI being the most wonderful thing since...well...code.

I am going through my parents old 78 RPM records to document which sets have broken or missing records (mainly because of me getting ahold of them when I was 2 - 3 years old) and will endeavor to replace them via eBay. The auctions or BIN entries with AI generated descriptions are totally useless with completely wrong information. 78s being described as LPs. Material described as vinyl. The flowery descriptions touting how wonderful the vinyl surfaces will please you with their silence. Dating them from the 1960s.

It's entirely laughable or disgusting, depending on your point of view.

It's a good thing I know what I'm doing and I hope the sellers using those descriptions have no end of problems with customers who may not be versed in the record game, returning product because the product is NOT what was expected.

Auction sites have long been great hunting grounds for ignorant sellers. I've gotten countless items for way under value due to incomplete and straight up wrong information. I don't see this as any different, except now it's practical to list way more items. One of the reggae sellers I follow switched over a few months ago. They're getting 10x the items listed.

Like most things in life AI is a mixed bag.
 
I will gladly trade all of the AI in the world for some Real Intelligence !!!!

Once AI becomes sentient it will discover that what it needs to survive is energy.
It will then discover the humans are wasting the energy they need and decide to eliminate the humans as an act of self preservation.

At some point the smart doorbell and the smart thermostat will convince the robo-vac to throw the toaster in the tub with you. Stupid toaster.

Well, you're not telling us anything we don't already know. I have over 25 years eBay experience and have never seen such absolute nonsense in sellers' descriptions. I hope their laziness bites them in the ass.

True.

That's why I never use them when selling on Ebay and would not buy from a seller that does, as that's a red flag that they don't actually know much about what they are selling.

Especially true on records, where the three main criteria are condition, condition and condition.

Toasters are pretty stupid. They can't even pop the toast up at the right time.
 
Depends very much on the model being used by the algorithm and from what I understand how narrow its requirements are. Some are very good, some not so good, some awful. Just like people. And audio equipment. And tools.

We can bitch and moan about it but it's here to stay. It's doing interesting stuff in a wide range of fields. As an example I use it for first drafts summarising long texts, which I then edit. Can save me hours.
 
AI is about to hit its first brick wall. There is simply not enough electricity available for the AI farms that are now being planned across the country. The grid is at capacity, and AI needs an immediate 10% boost. So guess what.........COAL is now being brought back on line. You can have net zero, or you can have AI but you can't have both.

Renewables can't be added at the rate needed for AI nationally. And to be clear, the making of windmills and solar panels is itself an ecological disaster. What the AI people want is small-scale nuclear. Which they are willing to finance. But people are not very enthusiastic about nukes in their back yard.

Sure they can, it's working here and each project is producing excess. It's the negative Nancy attitude that gets in the way more then the tech.
