Seems like any dumb bit of code is now called AI. When executed, such code executes exactly the same instruction sequence giving the same result. Yep such code is missing the I(ntelligence)/learning component. If it can't demonstrate learning it shouldn't be called AI.

Algorithm has become the latest buzz word (whatever happened to redacted, still having problems with "a number", news report, "a number of people were killed and injured"...) Back to algorithm, which is just some code (a sub function) that performs a particular task within a program. Algorithms have been around since the 1960's/1970's

I wouldn't call what the socials do as AI, eg, mbz likes vintage hifi and chainsaws, show him some adds for hifi, chainsaws and chainsaws cutting up vintage hifi. Data harvesting in not intelligence.

Has no one read The Adolescence of P-1? Written clear back in 1977. A lot of this stuff was foreseen and foretold when most of us were still in high school.

I've been following AI professionally since the 1980s. Got discouraged with the limits of the technology.

The latest is "generative" AI and the newest, "coolest" products are based on it. This whole marketing blizzard is indeed BS.

To boil it down, generative AI is finding conformity. Looking at a big pile of data and creating lots of links. Data with the most links becomes the answer. With enough computing power, one can now do that with images too.

However, every platform has an owner. Like in the real world, "He who has the gold makes the rules." That means that the training the platform gets has rules selected by the owner. We've seen that clearly where the answers are clearly bogus. When the responses are politically incorrect, the rules get changed.

Two things the new AI platforms do not have are 1) agency and 2) accountability. Only humans can provide agency and only humans can be responsible for bad results.

I'm in a big fight to keep these AI chat applications OFF the desktops of my colleagues in the nuclear power industry.

Do NOT put your trust (or investment money) in AI.
 
Movies, literary fiction, music and any form of entertainment media should not be referenced as data. It is meant to inspire or influence with bias.

If you are copy-pasting or applying results from any AI model without scrutiny for any work related tasks, that is, in a word, dumb. Don't do that.

AI can not, presently, come to novel conclusions.

It kinda reminds me of how people misunderstand "cruise control".

As far as I understand it, most "AI" is simply a glorified search engine and the results are often plagiarized.
 
The "renewable energy" movement is nothing more than a new INDUSTRY. It involves more heavy mining, more toxic manufacturing processes, more waste, more CO2 generation, more pollutants, more national, state and local debt, and can not come anywhere near actually powering the future.

The movement tries very hard to convince the public that "electricity is the same as energy" - which, of course, it is NOT. It also tries hard to conceal that most of the gains in renewables that can be reliably put on the grid are from "BIOMASS" - which is a fancy descriptor for "TREES" that are being cut by the millions to be feedstock for Biomass power stations.

The world is being destroyed by industrial insanity - attempting to supply 8 billion people with "all the cargo they could possibly dream of having." Windmills and solar panels are simply "more production, more GDP, more profits, more pollution, more destruction" that will lead to nowhere. "Renewable Energy" much like "Recycling" is nothing but a COVER STORY to keep the public nose out of the industrial super-destruction of the world.
 
I live just a few miles from this huge wind farm. 12 years now. I have never seen more than half of them turning at any one time. I think there are 800. They require a lot of maintenance too. No relation to the poor soul who died there.

Interesting that you say this. Where I live, in Eastern Ontario, we had had 3 tornadoes from the time I was 6 years old until I was in my 40s.

However that has changed. We have had at least one tornado come through every year for the last 5 years. Tornado warnings are now a regular thing, and we don't have any Tornado protection built into our infrastructure because it was such a rare phenomena.

My point is, there are no norms now.

Get used to it, and perhaps prepare. I'm not the only one considering a storm cellar and a power back up system. Power back up system being higher in priority, with the last two years having power outages that lasted weeks due to infrastructure destruction.

A few farmers added wind turbines to power there shops, etc. around here. But there just isn't enough windy days for them to be very useful.
Lots of sunny days in my area, so solar has become a much better choice.
There is a big rice dryer close to me that has a huge solar farm to power the dryers. I was flying my drone around my neighborhood this morning and most homes have solar now, me included. I was lucky and got a family discount. :biggrin:

I read it. It's a real cautionary tale. Don't upload a simple learning AI into the interwebs and later forget about it. :yikes: It was a good book.

I saw quite a few while I was in Germany for work.
My take-away was the same...lots of them were not running at any given time.
 
The not all running is normal. Juat like power plants are not always running at capacity :dunno:


It amusing watching it being used as a problem :thumbsup:

Just goes to show not all are really doing their diligence before posting.

A lot of power generation systems run as required by load demands unless there is a storage system in use. Hydro electric dams aren't running all turbines, or sometimes any, at all times for example.

Looks like GChief and I posted at the same time :-)
