How's the sound between plugged and ported?
It's about placement, of course.
As they're sitting, with no boundary reinforcement, ported is preferred. On stands out from the walls, or nearfield, that's how I'd play them.
I haven't tried them with boundary reinforcement yet, but it's a good bet plugged would be better, though power handling is diminished.
Bass hounds will probably like them ported at boundaries.
Seems odd to say it, considering their size, but they'd likely have too much bass located in corners in ported mode....
I was going to suggest calling them "Zilchignias" but we may have to upgrade the cabinet size just to accommodate the name badge.

Yes, basically.
These woofers' design parameters allow them to be used either in ported or closed boxes. The optimum size is different for each, but with compromises, they may be used either way in the same enclosure, adding versatility to potential application of the design.... :yes:

We're at about $250 total cost here. I know you're still tweaking them but do they best most commercially available speakers in this price range?

My test/measurement system uses 40 WPC JBL 6210 pro amps.
The woofer sets the baseline for system sensitivity, and these are 85 dB/W. Before we're done, I'll try them on Accurian and Sonic Impact T-Amp.
$250 using the prebuilt PE rectangular cabinets, but this is DIY, and the cost of admission can be substantially less, depending upon how they are packaged.
I hope everyone is understanding that part; it doesn't much matter what the box is, as long as it is well constructed and approximately the correct internal volume. I found a pair of free cabs this past weekend that would work quite nicely. We've no doubt all passed up plenty of suitable candidates when out "Thrifting."
Others are going to have to hear these for overall listening evaluation, but I can certainly say the bass bests anything I've heard in this small a package. Ray apparently knew that when he first recommended this woofer, and we bumped the cabinet size up to 0.38 cuft. primarily to accommodate it.

How is the 6210? I was going to buy one and was told it isnt in the same class in terms of sturdiness when compared to its bigger brothers 6230, 6260, and 6290? I think I already know the answer if you're using one!

There's no denying they are "entry level," and they're monoblocks, so I have built up a stack of four of them over the years.
If 6215s weren't so darned expensive, I'd probably be using one or more of those in a short rack with the other test gear.... :yes:
Tweren't me! I was looking more seriously at the RS series. I'll have to dig back to see who it was...maybe Newman or Gordon? I've always had a softspot for aluminum mids but it's not always a picnic to get around the breakup so I was a little skittish at using them at first. Looks like it worked out fine.
I'm back on the horse show circuit this weekend but hopefully I can get drivers ordered up next week and do some DIY boxes. I'm trying to figure out if I want to do a plain jane MDF to show how easy/cheap it can be or something nifty looking to show that it really isn't all that hard. Thoughts?

That way, you can put whatever design you prefer behind them, or they'll pop into PE finished boxes, should you decide they warrant that, and you'll have a spare set for an alternative driver set in your original cabs.

Actually when I said "nifty looking" (I did say that, right?) I was thinking more along the lines of stacked MDF with the insides cut out to make something kind of pear shaped. I need to do some math to figure out volumes to see if it's even feasible with the port we need. I know it'll change the dispersion and baffle step a bit but we're talking $111 in electronics here, not IRS V's.

1. They probably sound much better than Insignias but can you (or Wiredbecker) attempt to describe where/how they best them?
2. Sounds like solid bass. In both ported and plugged mode?

I've been out of circulation for a little bit so I haven't been keeping up on the beginner updates. Looks like Z has done a good job here. Do you guys have any questions we need to address to keep everybody up to speed?
Z, have you tried putting a pot in for the tweeter pad resistor to dork with? Might be fun to try so folks could tune the top end to their room/ears.
I should be ordering parts this weekend.
