There's still more to tweak, and it's apparent what.
I'm dorking around with the box tuning right now, and I can tell you that anybody building these is going to be stunned by what the little buggers do.... :yes:

Hi Zilch, Not too bad, so far!
I am keeping an eye on this thread, cause I plan to re-do an old pair of cabinets that are roughly .66 cubic feet. Might try this design, or may pick an 8 inch woofer and tweeter from Goldwood, and give that a try.

I'm not going to mess with the filters; it's much easier when you do it.
I have to build up the second one here, and I'm seriously looking at a "Mini" version in the 0.25 cuft. boxes using the 5.25" DA135 version of this woofer, with the smaller-flange ND28F-6 tweeter.... :yes:
Dave probably already knows this... but it looks like a lower-Q lowpass on the woofer might help a bunch. Larger coil, smaller cap. Or, maybe even better- just a larger coil... drop the frequency and lower the Q at the same time. I think if you can get rid of that "tilt up" on the top end of the woofer, things will settle right down. The tweeter response, while not absolutely flat, looks like it'll blend in fine, once the woofer is happy...
BTW: Now we're in my zone. Crossover tweaking is probably the point where I've had the MOST time involved, than in any other part of speaker building.

The 30° off-axis tweeter response is +/- 1.5 dB; that's how most of us listen, between 15° and 30°, and I can say from listening here, we're good to go with that part.... :yes:

One thing Gordon is REALLY good at in the crossover tweaking department is knowing what to do when someone describes what they can and can't hear when listening to a recording they know well.
Gordon and I have spent many an hour dialing in a speaker, with me listening, him tweaking. I'll say something like, "I can hear the second and third trumpets really well, but not the first trumpet part", and he'll make one small adjustment, and usually the problem is corrected within one or two tries.
The point? don't be afraid to tell him what you hear!

More data:
We are currently tuned to 37.5 Hz, per BB6P recommendation. It took a "Snorkel" duct to do it without cutting the brace.
Duct is 1.5" diameter X ~8.0" long.
CLIO says the acoustic center of the woofer is 1.98" behind the tweeter from tweeter axis at 42".
Inverse null says we're tuned to 1555 Hz.
It also says, with both drivers connected postive polarity, we are phase aligned at that frequency at 9.46° up from the tweeter axis.
Cursor's at -6 dB in this BB6P plot using PE measured parameters:

I got to hear the Indignia today and it sounds great as is! Really nice bass for a bookshelf, would probably sound better on an actual bookshelf. One thing I noticed is that they don't sound as spacious or open as some of the other Zilch designs I've heard but perhaps in time. If you need some good sub $100 speakers then this is the project for you.

Was this with the original crossover that Dave specified, or with an adjusted woofer inductor coil (ie, bigger coil on the woofer) as I suggested?
I'd expect the spaciousness to change, with that adjustment... getting rid of a midrange peak can oftentimes make the hall sound "bigger" and the instruments more "set back" in the stage instead of all "piled up at the front"...

I'd be really interested in seeing the plans for the small version if/when you boys get around to it. The boxes that I want to use will not hold the woofer from this project. Curious to see what kind of performance can be wrung out of a 5 1/4 woof.
It's still the Rev 2 crossover, Gordon, with EQ to mitigate the hump, not a preferred approach in the crossover region.
I'm still not finished building up the second one to the same spec for A/B comparison.
I'm hoping Dave can move the frequency up closer to 2 kHz, maybe, at the same time.... :yes:

I'll get to it, and I appreciate any tips that anyone gives me. It can't hurt to try anything at this stage and I didn't really mean to sort of take over the design process.

I'm having some difficulty getting the horn to fit, too....maybe this design needs a port/speaker stand.
