Drivers:
Dayton RS150 woofer $28.29 each, $56.58/pair
HiFi TN25 tweeter $8.28 each, $16.56/pair

Crossovers:
(Tweeter)
2- 3.3uf Panasonic poly (surplus) $1.20/pair
2- .9mh Madisound 19g coils $8.70/pair (Madisound)
4- 15w resistors (values TBA, pad) $1.80/for 4 (Madisound)

(Woofer)
2- .45mh Madisound 20g coils $6.50/pair

(Woofer Notch filter- across woofer ~10KHz)
2- 2.2uf Madisound surplus mylar caps $0.60/pair
2- 3 ohm (or thereabout) 15w resistors $0.90/pair (Madisound)
2- .1mh 20g Madisound coils $4.80/pair

If my calculations are right, that's $97.64 for the whole shooting match. You could even add a Zobel to the woofer if needed, and STILL make it (PE electrolytic caps, say 6.8uf, and 15w Madisound resistors), coming in at just over $99.50!

Yeah, the tweeter is about 1.5 dB down at 20KHz, but I don't think that will make it sound bad. And crossed over at 2750 Hz second order, it should be fine... we can play with the values on it a bit, if needed...

So... whaddya all think? Huh? huh? huh? :D :D :D

Yes, PE, the smallest curved one.

It's a brace inside the cab. Newer production is supposed to come with it removable.

You can see the quality of the construction and exterior finish there.... :thmbsp:
 
Honestly, as a DIYer and speaker builder, the PE cabinets are so well built and finished so nicely that for the most part, it's hard to jusify building cabinets unless you need something special or a size they don't carry.
 
They ARE pricey, and the shipping's not cheap either.

If a DIYer finds the system warrants it after building a "test box," they can subsequently upgrade to the PE cabs or similar.

That's one reason I've suggested we work with these stock baffles and grilles.... :yes:

When you figure in materials at current prices and the time to do the finish work, the cost doesn't seem as imposing.
 
Good thread, great idea. It'll be interesting to see what you guys come up with here. I have a really nice pair of little boxes I've been meaning to do something with, and this might be what I need to finally get around to them. :thmbsp:

DC28F-8 is already on order here.

That may be fine at 15°. :thmbsp:

Parts for the Zaph crossovers are $37/pair, half of that being the lowpass inductors.

We may end up winding our own.

[It IS DIY, after all.... ;) ]
 
Why is ND28 called "Rear mount design" when it has a front mount flange? :dunno:

If they're made from 0.75" stock, they calc to 0.32 cuft., and the similar but smaller 5.25" DA135-8 would fit with modification of the woofer recess to accommodate the round flange.

I may be loading those drivers into my 0.25 cuft. PE boxes here, depending on how the larger project design comes out.... :yes:
