AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

Excellent work! What kind of power does the amp put out? I've run my Indignias on a Sonic Impact T-amp and it worked ok but I thought they needed a little more oomph.

They sound very good. I took them over to a friends house where we did some ABC comparisions. He has a DIY 2way using a seas tweet and Dayton ref 7" woof. His dug down a bit deeper, but these seemed to image a bit better and had some nice sparkle on the top. Diana Krall is great. Voice is sultry and strong with no syllabas.

We also compared them to a couple of commerical offerings that I don't quite remember, but were at least comparable in price point or higher. These things simple blew them away!

For equipment, we were using a Denon CD player, Emotiva DAC, and Crown MacroRef amp. They took quite a bit of power before any sign of distress. They are not quite as efficient as my friends, but at home on 150w, they will drive you out of the room way before distortion sets in.
 
PCB's for Indignia

I have been going through this thread the last couple of days after finding these speakers on the PE project page. I'm surprised that they didn't market a kit for these!

They look like they would work good in the shop. I'm thinking I might try powering them with the infamous Accurian modified amp. Does any body have experience with that setup?

I really like the look of the PCB board assembly shown in the thread. Yeah, I know that no one sees it when you're done but I'd like to do it that way any ways. Has any one been making this board? I'd like to purchase them if they are available.

Well, I just looked back a few pages and noticed I may have missed a group buy, dag nab it!

I've run Indignias on an Accurian amp many times. This is the outdoor stereo we listen to at my friend's cabin in Eagle River, usually late at night and stargazing when we're winding down towards bed. We set them up outside on stools on the garage door apron (with an open two car garage to the rear) and play loud enough to disturb the neighbors (don't ask me how I know). While they benefit from more power, a 25W/ch Accurian will drive them just fine.

I built mine in larger cabinets than most everyone else here which, if I understand correctly and generally speaking, makes it easier to overextend the woofer travel than smaller cabinets would. I use my Indignia's with a Pioneer SX-750 receiver (55w/ch?) and feel it is the appropriate amount of power for the speakers. If I wanted I could easily crank the volume high enough to overdrive the woofers. I also believe I may have inadvertantly done so and taken out my right tweeter. It still works but has a raspy-ness I can hear under certain conditions. I believe anything over this wattage would be overkill for these speakers.

In the beginning I used the Indignia's with a Magnavox 8802 tube amp (10w/ch) and, while they sounded great, don't feel they are efficient enough for the Mag. I hope that gives you enough of an idea about 'the real world' to make decisions.

I doubt it. I tried to kickstart one but it appears to have fallen on deaf ears (or blind eyes). I bought all the parts for my second pair on my own earlier this year while the drivers were on sale and will start building sometime this year.

wiredbecker sells the bare PC boards for this project. Send him a PM.
 
A few pages back, there was a minor amount of interest in another group buy, but nothing to warrant the effort of organizing it. If we could get another 10-15 people interested, I'd probably give it another go.

I'd like to put my name on the list. Don't know how much it would beat down the cost, but I am not needing to build these right this moment so I could wait patiently for a while to see if it works out.

This project was well worth the effort. I got mine off the second GB. Value for the minimal price is outstanding. :music::music:
 
I combined the AK Indignia design and specs with the Podzuma from the Parts Express project gallery to make a portable stereo. Turned out great and sounds wonderfull. It's also a pretty awesome bottle opener. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=442552

Sweet! :D Every time I fire up my Indignias I forget just how small they are. :yes:
