AK Fest 2012 - Real World Audio

How about, "Some us don't mind paying for quality" ;-)

My one issue with this whole thing is that we're already viewed and pigeonholed as the cheapskate audio website, at least that is how it comes up in many conversations outside of this forum, in the audio community. That we're all concerned with nothing more than getting a score regardless of sound quality. I guess this version of a fest could counteract that perception by showing how much good stuff can be had for very little. Or it could reinforce the stereotype that these forums have attained.

Don't get me wrong- I think its a needed direction for the hobby- the cost of stuff at shows has gotten to be almost universally unattainable.

Hey, any idiot with money to burn can throw megabucks at shiny metal boxes and snake oil cables. Half the fun of this hobby is learning and building stuff! That's what makes AK so great, you get the best of both worlds! :thmbsp:

I agree here with John. The next Fest shouldn't be labeled some kinda "blue collar" show. While most can not or want to spend bundles of cash in these budget conscience times there are still widely affordable quality new and used gear that is attainable.

Inviting hi-end dealers and manufacturers is still good thing. Even the manufacturers/dealers are in a tight spot. So they might opt to leave their mega dollar systems and bring quality affordable systems/components that can work and better existing systems and or build upon a better system in the future.

There is a growing number of DIY kit manufacturers and parts suppliers that should be included. Much enjoyment can come from building your on "thing." Chinese tube gear is getting better each year and you can't beat the price.

Any ways, hope the AKFest 2012 is a huge success!

+1 on "Real World Audio".

Would love some DIY demonstrations, like refoaming, recapping, etc. Would also love to see a class on reading schematics (where is that darn signal path anyways?) and one on using an oscilloscope.

I offer myself as a valet (think Passepartout) to anyone who wants to take me along. I'll carry things, hail taxi's, hold your umbrella, etc. My services are just a PM away.

Oh, and best wishes for AKFest 2012!!!

Leading nominees for the Fest Theme are:

Real World Audio
Attainable Audio
Affordable Audio
Back to Basics Audio
Audio for the Common Man
Audio for Every Lifestyle

And my personal favorite for the slogan:

Brother Can You Spare an Amp?

FYI: I re-did the thread as Real World Audio, since Blue Collar was dying a horrible death.

How about something like "Sane Notes".
Workshops on restoration, kit building.
Make it in the four corners so I can go!!:D

And I'm a blue collar Pollock from Toledo.

A Pollock?

How about "Audio For A Brave New World" (yes we are shamefully stealing Alex Huxley's title)
or " AK 2012-Audio Horizons"
maybe even "Enlightened Audio"

I should point out that Affordable Audio is an e-zine, but I don't think its copyrighted.

I spend a lot of time looking at high performance audio equipment that is reasonably priced. Companies that I think would make sense would be

Vista Audio
Monarchy Audio
SVS speakers
GR Research
Dayens audio
Audio Sector
Music Hall
Emotiva
Monoprice
Decware
Rega's distributor
HSU Audio
Magnepan
Project distributor
Rythmik Audio
Creative Sound Solutions
Planet 10 Hifi
Audio Nirvana-Common Sense Audio
