AKAI Lovers and Collectors...

Hi, I'm also an AKAI fan from Taipei,Taiwan.

I have 2 sets of GX-77(R2R) and 1 set of GX-75D, and luckily I will soon get a NOS GX-F91, I am using BASF MAXIMA super II (CrO2) tapes now.

AKAI gears are really good ones.

I really like that era of Akai it looks great, build like a tank, really reliable and most important the sound is really great.

We're here, maybe we're just a bit too modest. My AA-920 feeds three sets of speakers throughout my place, and it's built like a tank. Yeah, need to replace a bulb, but it's coming up on its 40th birthday.

Excellent. The AA-920 definitely brings out the best of the Paradigm Titans at my computer desk, which is where I do most of my listening. Plenty of power for its conservative 35 WPC rating.
I had another Akai receiver that I gave away, regretting it now.

The GX-77, I don't have unfortunately, the GX-75D the top loader I have, thats a very nice deck!

The tube powered open reel decks are also really great, the M8 I almost had bought ones... (I have the mic's already :))

So you can see, I have a lot, but there is much much more to go... :) But I don't have the space and the money for it anymore... I'm selling some stuf time to time, so I can buy something other nice AKAI back...

I've owned three Akai pieces since new.

GX-52 cassette deck
AM-73 amplifier
CD-73 cd player

All need work (and are currently not in use), but I have no intention of selling them. I bought the amp and cd player when Akai pulled out of North America. A liquidation firm bought all the local stock, and I went down to their store after seeing an ad in the paper for "Akai up to 75% off!!!" They had a security guard watching the Akai stock, which was piled to the ceiling behind a chain link fence in the corner of the store. I think I paid about $700 for the pair, which was a lot of money for a university student.
 
Guys I have a question for you, not sure this is the right place but here it goes. I recently purchased a AM-2950 for $100. Everything works except the lights which I will have replaced.
I am seriously thinking about having it rebuilt even though it is working well. The problem is finding someone willing to take on this big job. I have a tech that I use in the US for smaller jobs such as rebuilding my Mach one crossovers but to ship this 43 pound beast to him would be crazy expensive. This same tech wrote this to me when I asked why it was so difficult to get techs to do rebuilds. This was his answer and excuse the caps.
THERE IS A DISTINCT AND DIFFERENT "MINDSET" BETWEEN REPAIRMEN. ONE BUNCH SIMPLY HAVE NO DESIRE FOR UPGRADES AND REBUILDING.THEY ONLY REPAIR IMMEDIATE FAILURES AND CHARGE THE MAX. FOR THE WORK. THEY HOPE THE CUSTOMER IS IGNORANT AND HAS MORE MONEY THAN KNOWLEDGE. NOT CONCERNED WITH "LONG TERM" RELIABILITY.

A SMALLER NUMBER DO REALIZE THAT VINTAGE ELECTRONICS BECOME TICKING TIMEBOMBS AND PERFORMANCE DECREASES OVER TIME. UNFORTUNATELY, NOT MANY OF USE DO REBUILDS AND UPGRADES PROFIT MARGIN IS NOT NEARLY AS GREAT AS DOING BASIC REPAIRS. YOU ALWAYS INVEST MORE LABOR TIME THAN YOU CAN CHARGE FOR. YOU HAVE TO KEEP REBUILD COST WITHIN REASON TO SUPPORT THE ACTUAL VALUE OF THE UNIT.

So I ask you is this a lost cause? Anyone know of someone here in Canada that will take it on. I have no problem with spending whatever it will take to get it done. They don't make amps like this anymore and I would like to keep it.
 
I hadn't thought of it before but I have more AKAI equipment than any other brand.

The AA-R30 surprised me by sounding better than I thought it would.
 
Ran across this thread and I flashed back on the Akai M6S stereo tape recorder I bought in Hong Kong back in the early 60s and owned for many years. Wish I had kept it as it was a really neat deck.................:sigh:

You should probably do a separate thread for this, emphasing on the fact that you're looking for a rebuild-tech in the "such and such" area. There are lots of AK'ers who are also vintage repair specialists. I agree about a lot of repair places scraping the bottom of the integrity bowl, especially the places who take in a lot of '90's CD and DVD-players (It's more than a bit unnerving to see your beloved vintage idler turntable sitting on a shelf next to a mid '90's Sharp DVD/VCR combo... and that guy's AHEAD of you).

Akai has made some great stuff, personally I likes the somewhat older series better.
But I can understand your affection, cause it has that really eighties atmosphere.

Re Akai Equipment

Sold Akai for many years in my Audio store. Their equipment was always well built and had the feel of quality, their tape decks were always good sellers.I still have 2 akai r2r gx4000 and a gx630 I remember their pro 1000 deck man was that a fine piece I still regret not buying one when they were closing them out.
 
I love the look of Akai gear. Have a GXC-760D cassette deck currently. Looking to build the collection.
