It seems that Led Zeppelin went above and beyond a few times with the album covers for LZ III (spinning picture wheel), Phys Graf (record sleeves and album cover change pictues in windows) and even with In through the out door (6 different photo covers).

Styx had their cornerstone album that opened from the center of the front side

Grand Funk had the coin shaped E Plurbus Funk album

I have a Linda Rhondstat/Nelson Riddle album that opens like an envelope....

what other album covers have gone beyond the normal simple fold open or single cover? Not so much concerned with album artwork, we've had plenty of threads on that one, just looking to see what other bands got very creative with their record covers to make it a more of an experience to open, review notes and listen to the music.

Oh.. and my reissue Doors LA Woman album cover has a plastic window in it so you can see the sleeve on the inside through it..

And then there was the Grand Funk LP Shine On with the 3D glasses as part of the cover you can punch out... my glasses are still intact..

Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick cover is essentially a folded newspaper - oddly topical with modern recycling efforts
 
One more that is striking me, but I can't remember exactly what it is about the cover, but Dave Mason's Alone Again, I'm remembering something about a top hat, and the way the cover opens and how you pull out the LP... I'll have to look at that..

OH, and then another Stone's.. Some Girls with the holes cut out in the cover to see parts of the inner sleeve..

Funny, I was just about to list that one. I do not own any Tool vinyl albums, but their CD covers are always cool.
 
Tull made me remember... Their Stand Up album, with the pop-up of them in the center.

Believe it or not too.. all these I'm listing I have, is why I know about them.. and I do have Thick As A Brick too..

Public Image Ltd named their album ALBUM or CASSETTE, and its single (the song Rice) SINGLE.
A few years later, when the digital music disc came allong, they called it COMPACT DISC.

The collectorversion of ALBUM was delivered in a plastic container called BAG.

The first VU album had the banana sticker, and was the first "interactive" LP I can recall.
The album cover is famous for its Warhol design: a yellow banana with “Peel slowly and see” printed near a perforated tab. Those who did remove the banana skin found a pink, peeled banana beneath.

The album cover and back was designed using an anamorphic projection that distorted the facial features of the band members but which looks correct when viewed from the side through special pinholes in the lyric sheet.

1967 for VU & Nico. Could well have been the first "interactive" cover. Dial-a-Hit came out in '69.
