Albums you keep even though not every song is good

Brett a

I'm starting this thread as a companion to the Albums where EVERY song is good thread. I just couldn't relate to that question and I wonder if I'm not the only one. I tend to only keep albums (any format) that are good from beginning to end.

I have a few CDs I bought becasue i liked just one or two songs. So here's a thread for those of us who find this to be more the case.

Two albums that come to mind that I find myself skipping tracks when I play them would be

Don Walser - Rolling Stone From Texas

and Khia - Thug Misses

If I like an artist I don't hate any of their songs. Some are better than others but it's not like I'm suffering listening to the entire record. Can't remember the last time I lifted the needle to skip a song.
I do have records/CD's that never get played but I still have them. They might as well be gone.

This is me as well. Though I will skip duds on CD's, I don't on LP's. And audio files lend themselves to singles-play.

I think the majority of records have some duds on them. If I kept only the records with wall-to-wall pleasers, I'd only have about 25 albums, and I'd be missing out on a great bunch of music. I generally find fewer duds on albums where one person did all of the writing, as opposed to band efforts that divided the songwriting up. Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" comes to mind- there's a Phil Collins song on there that ruins the record for me- kills it. Otherwise I'd like the entire thing.

The pedal steel country tunes are out-of-this-world good, while the bluesy tunes are pedestrian. I will skip the blues tunes on occasion.

"More Fool Me" - totally agree with you on that one. I still play the whole album every time (no digital here). My choices are Beatles (White Album) and Bob Dylan "Self Portrait". I plan on making a tape of the 2 - 3 sides of good stuff on each record.

or more, sometimes a record only has 1 good song. I recently bought a USB audio interface for such records. I'm going to move them to the digital world, only to be converted to analog again by my DAC.

Again, I guess I'm in the minority here in disagreeing with the "If I like an artist I don't hate any of their songs" sentiment. For example, nothing kills the mood more than listening to Sgt Pepper, when "When I'm 64" comes on.

Doesn't bother me,I'm 66:):thmbsp:

This might be bordering on heresy, but I am not a big fan of Tommy by the Who. There are some great songs on it, but it always struck me that there was also a lot of filler and similar sounding material. :dunno:

Well, I'd point out that a lot of albums had the good stuff on side A, and lesser on side B.
Exceptions, Hotel California was the final song on side B

I'd say 1/3 or more of the albums in my collection have 3 or fewer good songs on them. Case in point, I was listening to Brand New Morning by Bob Seger the other day. A few decent tracks, some I don't like. I can't sell it though, it's a Near Mint original and the likelihood of coming across another it this condition would be very tough (and costly).

I can sorta concur with this point ... depending on the N of tracks, of course, but I'd say that on average there are three, rarely four, in 10 tracks that are actually quite good, and some outstanding (rarely), per each of my thousands of LPs.

I wonder what the stat would be for, say, the 78 and 45 RPM "sides" collection? Assuming @ least 50% are favorable, suppose an additional 25% are good or better than good, so around an over 75% positive rating?

As for 45's, at least in my collection, I'd say 60% of them, only the plug side is good. 30% both sides are good and 10% the B side is good and plug side isn't.

If I only kept albums where I liked every song I'd only have a handful of albums at best. Off the top of my head I can only think of two.

Sink The Bismarck - Sine Metu
Senses Fail - Let It Enfold You
And only because I mentioned it in the other thread. Taylor Swift's Midnights album is good or better from beginning to end but it's not in my listening wheelhouse so it isn't something I'd listen to on my own.

I've had a similar conversation before with a guy and the only thing I could think is why don't you collect singles.

I think an alternate question is how much are you willing to pay for a physical album when you only like a couple of the songs on the album? With the current reissue prices and ever climbing used prices price per song (and even more so price per quality song) are climbing exponentially.

I was probably more discriminating in my collecting of "sides, esp. 78s. You, on the other hand, were (are?) a big collector and dealer, so it is likely you "gathered in" hundreds (and hundreds more) such, especially 45s, that I'd never acquired.
