Aligning the AR XA arm

How exactly did you guys align your AR XA arm? My arm doesn't seem to be able to be aligned with the Baerwald or Simple alignment tools. I even tried the AR XA alignment tool but my arm won't go in enough to hit the point.

I read a post by Marc Morin saying that spindle to tip should be 226mm, but my arm won't go in enough for that.

Any ideas?

is arm "pivot" to stylus "tip" (overhang) adjustable on the XA ?

So make sure the back of the arm is 16.5mm beyond the spindle? Beyond the center of it or the edge?

Which protractors do you use.

I believe he meant Arm spindle. It's adjustable. You can unscrew the arm and pull it out a bit.
 
The fixed distance from arm spindle to platter spindle on the stock AR XA/XB is 210 mm. The overhang of the stylus should be approximately 16.5 mm past the platter spindle. If you are not using a protractor to align the stylus, you can plug the headshell upside down in the arm. Set it in the arm rest and then measure the distance from the arm spindle to the stylus tip. Get it as close to 226.5 mm as you can get. That would give you an overhang of 16.5 mm. On the stock AR arm you adjust the overhang by adjusting the tube where it goes into the pivot block. There is a set screw that you can loosen and then make adjustments to the length of the overhang. From there you can tweak the overhang by listening until you find the sweet spot. Many here will tell you that sweet song is an overhang of 16.5 mm.

Thank you! I can't seem to get any lower than 230 though but I'll keep trying
 
Can you swing the arm over the platter so the cartridge sits onto the post that holds the record?

It’s okay if you can’t. Anyway, measure from the stylus tip to the center of the bearing/rotation mechanism the tonearm swings left and right on. Looking for 226.5 mm

I can do that. I still can't seem to go that low, though
