Alignment or no?

Poor reception, poor dial point accuracy, trouble locking stereo even with strong stations, etc.
I would say most tuners could probably benefit from an alignment, even from the factory the majority probably aren't "perfect". Most people don't bother having it done because it is generally expensive, a lot of techs can't or won't do it, and it requires some specialized equipment and know-how which makes it difficult to DIY.

I noticed a lot of people don't want much to do with it. I adjusted my pointer today but have never had problem locking on channels. I read somewhere on here if it's been shipped it will probably need an alignment. Chances are the guy who will align my tuner will need me to ship it to him. So kind of a waste?

I don't agree that shipping will cause alignment problems. I know plenty of people that have shipped their tuners to have them aligned and been very happy with the results.

A couple of things...

Even if your tuner seems in alignment.. I'm assuming you have a TU-9900 by your avatar. The slightest tweak can make a difference between .3% THD and .004% THD.

In all the alignments that I've done, I may have had two or three that the alignment changed with shipping. It happens, but is exceedingly rare. Seem more common with tube tuners.

The most obvious sign of alignment being out is when tuning away from the station, the response in terms of db lost per degree of tuning knob movement is vastly different between tuning higher and tuning lower. Another sign is getting the least distortion when the tuning meter is not at its peak amplitude or off centre with a centre zero meter..

Yes my tu9900 pulls in stations great. I adjusted the pointer . On both ends of the of the display the pointer is very accurate, in the middle it's not perfect. the station will come in great with no problems locking stereo there just not exactly where they should be

You will never get the pointer to be accurate on every part of the dial. I use 98MHz as the location to make the error 0%
the only way to tell if you are in perfect alignment is to actually do the alignment test/procedures.

Just yesterday, my crown fm1 was acting up, losing stereo, it was the HA11223 vco adjust pot, I put the scope on it when it was acting up, the freq was way off 76KHz, couple of wipes of the pot to clean the crud and set for 76KHz, prob fixed til next issue.
