of course, many would offer similar opinions of the 811B -- and even more would do so of the 511B.
I am (much) more tolerant of the 811B than the aforementioned Klipsch MR horn (FWIW).
The 511B? Well -- I am not as down on them as many folks. Which probably reflects more on my ears (or taste) than the opinions of others.

I did the same with some Magnavox horns. Worked really well.

If the acoustical centers of the woofer and horn driver are in a vertical line you will get the best interfacing between the woofer and horn at the crossover frequency. If they are mis aligned you may have to change the polarity of the horn driver hook up to get the smoothest transition. A 416 woofer will reach further down the spectrum in a large infinite baffle compared to a 515. With the cost of current 515's I would rather have a pair of 416's to combine with Altec horn. They reach down to 20HZ where a single 515 has trouble below 35 hz. My favorite Altec system is a Urei 813 monitor speaker.
I like the 511 and 811. After early use of 511s I used a wide variety of horns over the years, including Altec multi cells, Emilars, Edgar salad bowls, Smith horns, Universities, various EVs (including the mighty SM-120A), McCauleys, JBLs, PAudios, Klipsches, Bertinellis and others. And in the last horn systems I owned before going over to chinless direct radiators I was back to 511s and 811s. And Emilar bow ties.

This points out a very important factor, part of which the OP found: Horns, unlike a cone transducer, modify the acoustic energy of the transducer and can amplify any poor sounding resonances produced. What some listeners hear as ringing may be due to impedance mismatch between amplified source and the driver or a rise in impedance through the frequency response, as was noted. It's good that the OP took a less invasive and objective approach. I'd caution anyone to take this approach first before installing a coating that will be impossible to remove or has the possibility of failure in the future. If it's impossible to leave the school of horn damping, use modeling clay, duct seal, or any other manner of removable mass.
Yes, the 416 woofer reaches low and compares well to the 515, especially if not used in the throat of typical VOTT alignment. I really need to get my measurement gear sorted out so that I can find the actual frequency response of my big MLTL cabs.

Check this out. The exit "lips" of the 811 ring like a bell. Use *automotive door edge guard* ...it works! and leaves no trace apon removal.
