Altec horns coming!

Well, given a choice, I'd prefer consecutive numbers, but I can "make do" with non-consecutive ones, lol. I guess I was whining nicely that they're not consecutive. :tears: ;)

LOL, I wasn't complaining at all, just commenting. :smoke: I guess if I'm going to study speaker lunacy, I should study under real lunatics. :D Now you guys have me browsing around more at the Lansing Heritage site, and I'm wondering how I'm going to finance all the toys I want. :scratch2: :D

I just had to dig this up again, because I finally got the EVs in cabs, with the horns on top, and it's just magical to hear. :smoke: I always knew the EVM12-Ls were special, heck some of the best guitar players in the world use(d) them, but with my limited knowledge, I never found the right HF drivers to do them justice before. I got pretty side-tracked, learning about bi-amping, and using other woofers, but everything happens in it's time. The cabs I'm using really look kinda crappy, old Kenwoods that I mutilated the baffles on in other experiments, lol, but they work perfectly now. They're made of nice thick MDF and hold the EVs securely, and since the EVs like being well vented, the baffles don't even matter. As a bonus, they also hold the Altecs level on top, rather than tilted upwards slightly like they were, and the horns are right at ear level, like they should be. :thmbsp: I'm probably going to experiment a bit with passive crossovers too, but everything else is done now, and I can't imagine any way to improve on them, they just sound perfect. :music: :D :music:

Redboy's using the 800 Hz Eminence with 511B horns, and I worked out a compensation network for his BMS drivers using those. Can you run 811Bs at 800 Hz? Sure. Is that optiomum? Not without compensation, most likely. There is also the issue of how well the woofer plays at 1200 Hz vs. 800 Hz.

There are other, perhaps better, options for 811B owners, including a generic version of the Model 19 crossover, or the 846 asymmetric 2nd-order plus T-filter or other compensation, in addition to the active solution I am advocating here.

Yes, I've tried all of these, as you've seen in these forums. Why do I come out strongly in favor of the active approach? Because I know chances are pretty good in DIY that you'll be wanting to try other, different, stuff in the future, and active provides a versatile platform for conveniently accomplishing that.

If you're upgrading a specific system, use passive. If you're "experimenting," go active.... :yes:

It's a circuit that extends the high frequency response of the compression drivers by pushing down the midrange, of which there is an excess. Late model Altecs such as the 14s, 18s and 19s used such circuits.
