ALTEC LANSING STONEHENGE TWO

You can do a LOT better for 550.

Whoever refoamed the woofers didn't bother to put gaskets back on. A very minor detail. But, at that price there should be ZERO minor negative details.

FWIW, the tweeter is the weakest link. The woofer is the early steel basket version of the same used in model 9 and model 15. Something in the 200-300 range would be much more realistic.

I sold a pair of stonehenge one CABINETS for $600 a few months back.

So idk... $550 is great considering all original drivers.

These are stonehenge IIs though.

Idk I would offer like $300.

If the seller picked them up at a moving sale like the ad stated, I'm sure you could get them cheaper. $550.00 is not a bad price, but I'm sure you could get them for less.

the thing with the stonehenge I vs the II is that the stonehenge I uses a better woofer . (I own a pair of the I's full disclosure.) The I has a 427 woofer (basically a 414 in a different frame) and produces some pretty sweet midrange / bass. The II I'm 90% sure uses a more common non-altec woofer. (May edit this if i I can track down the spec sheets but it is late.) Given the lack of a 414 woofer that definitely seems like a high price. Given the rarity of the stonehenges though to a collector maybe not :dunno: FWIW my stonehenges have my favorite midrange of my current corral of speakers (Klipsch KG4's and JBL 4410's).

To my mind though the II's shouldn't command that price. Same tweeter as the I which doesn't have a ton of high end extension / sparkle although I still listen to my I's frequently for the great midrange that they have.I feel like 2-300 is probably more appropriate if we are going for the rarity of the tweeter as a parts resale thing and the possible use of the cabinet in an ewave or redesign. I'd be curious to hear a frankenstein version of the II's using the I's woofer but at that price it's not worth fetching them for me.

I haven't heard any of the all cone driver Altecs. How do these sound?
Meh.

You know where to get the facts, Don, the green place, or ask Bill when you talk to him.

The SH I woofer is a modified 414, it's not a "427" that's incorrect. The tweeter is an Altec 427-8A and as much as the aluminum dome made them look "racy" they don't perform any better than the paper cone tweeters Altec used made by both CTS and Becker.

The Segovia is a better sounding speaker top to bottom, if you want to try a 3-way, non-horn Altec that's the one to get.

I probably wont seek a pair of these out but its good to be informed about them if I run across a pair in the wild.
There are a few good sounding cone tweeters but I am more a dome or horn fan.

OT- Lately I have been going to that green page and pulling up a random page of threads and reading them. I need to catchup from all the years I wasn't a member:)

Sound wise, they're decent. Nothing real special, but not bad. I had a pair of II's for a while. I ended up trading them off. I think the reason these are higher priced is the somewhat rarity and the name. They aren't something you'll find for sale every day.

woops sorry about the woofer mistake, wrote the response late and didn't dig up the spec sheet. glad to know that there is not a substantial difference between the metal / paper dome version of the tweeter. wonder how the stonehenge would sound with a more modern replacement for the tweeter since it is nothing special  might be something to pursue (I've seen mention of it elsewhere but nothing really panned out in the threads that talk about it.)
