Any "covers" ever better than the originals?

If we're on the subject of established bands that do great covers we have to include Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. They did a pile of covers on their stint at the Fillmore, plus a few on the live box set from a few years back.

Forgot about TP&TH. Yes, Tom and Mike C. supervised a lotta fine covers.

A Group Called Smith/ Baby It's You. Nice bump and grind rhythm, an awesome horn section, and a superb transformation of an old Girl Group classic into a mid-tempo rocker. Gayle McCormick's dynamic, expressive vocals are a sonic thrill ride. A totally unexpected transformation of a classic, itself a classic. Burt Bacharach wrote it, the Shirelles had the first hit, and from there a legend.

A Bacharach tune, IIRC.

So true.
I have an ROIO three disc set I picked up years ago(probably from dime) called 20 Nights At The Fillmore. It was recorded on the last night of the run, 02/07/97.
I just looked in the CDR case, and it also has a bonus disc recorded by Westwood One with Should I Stay Or Should I Go, Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover, For What It's Worth, Crazy Mama, and Friend Of The Devil. Not sure if that bonus disc came with the original download, or I added it myself?

Great thread, here's a few I enjoy:
Jefferson Airplane covers of Triad & Wooden Ships by David Crosby.
Clive Gregson & Christine Collister cover of "One Step Up" by Springsteen.
The Meters cover a Bread Song "Make it With You" from their Live on the Queen Mary set.

Here's a rare take.. Bo Diddly did "Mona" first, way back when.. an odd kind of love tune. Quick Silver Messenger Service covered it and tuned it into almost a stalker deal... grim, dark, moody. So cool, so much in tune with the times.. Psychedelic blues.

Wild thing went from unlistenable by the Troggs to great by Jimi Hendrix.
I'd hafta agree with this one.

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.
Yep,pretty much Johnny Cash covering anything would likely get my vote.

Speaking of that,I like the Johnny Cash version of Rusty Cage much better than the Soundgarden original.
Jimmy
Agree, and I'm a huge Soundgarden fan,I'm sure they were blown away by this one.
Say what you want about Rick Rubin at least he had the genius idea to get JC back into the studio to record these covers.

Add to those:
I wont back down ~ Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers cover.
Desperado ~ Eagles cover.

The Junkies' Sweet Jane is good stuff too.
Yeah,like this one better too.

Shapes of Things - Gary Moore's cover of the Yardbirds original.
Absolutely, much prefer Gary Moore's version of this one.

Raven's cover of Born to be Wild.
Big fan of Raven back in the day,yet I have'nt heard this version so I'll hafta check that one out.

Add to that:
The Cult's version of Born To Be Wild.

The Lemonheads version of "Mrs. Robinson".
Yep,like that one too.

Nirvana's cover of 'Where did you sleep last night'
Originally performed by Leadbelly.
Yes. All the covers from that unplugged taping were pure brilliance.

"Moving in Stereo" covered by Fu Manchu
"American Woman" covered by Soundgarden

I like all of these over the originals.

Matt
Major fan of both bands but have'nt heard either of these covers, which is odd to me,must be off of their newer stuff or something.

Add to this:
FuManchu doing Godzilla (BOC cover) much better version, they let the song become as heavy as it can get.

My contributions: (and I'm sure I'll get some heat for a couple of these)
Bahaus doing "Ziggy Stardust" by Bowie.
Anthrax doing "Parasite" by KISS.
Anthrax doing "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" by well you know.
Anthrax doing "God Save The Queen" by The Sex Pistols.
Anthrax doing "Bring the Noise" by PE.
Voivod doing "Astronomy Domine" by Pink Floyd.
Marilyn Manson doing "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.
Marilyn Manson doing "Down In The Park" by Gary Numan.
Marilyn Manson's version of "Tainted Love" (cover of a cover).
Lou Reed doing "This Magic Moment" by Roy Orbison.
COC doing "Lord Of This World" by Black Sabbath (NIB I).
Godsmack doing "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath (NIB II).
Ministry doing "Lay Lady Lay" by Dylan.
Overkill doing "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter.
Pantera doing "Electric Funeral" by Black Sabbath (NIB II).
Sepultura doing "Orgasmatron" by Motorhead.
Soulfly doing "Under The Sun" by Black Sabbath (NIB II).
White Zombie doing "Children Of The Grave" by Black Sabbath (NIB I).
Metallica doing "Am I Evil" by Diamondhead.
The Bangles doing "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" by Paul Simon.

Just a few that I can recall w/o too much thinking about it,and have'nt already been mentioned.

FWIW

Some good ones in your list indeed...especially Pantera's cover of Electric Funeral, freaking epic.

Agreed on the Anthrax covers, they're excellent. Not so much on the Metallica version, which is overplayed as hell and was further bastardized by the popular "abridged" version which cuts out half the song - what a travesty. Plus I'm an NWOBHM fan at heart, so it's quite dear to me...

I like covers when they are in a different style than the original, when there's a twist (somebody was mentioning Eva Cassidy, for example).

I despise covers that are just attempts to be better than the original, but without bringing anything new.

That being said, a cover will always be just that, a cover. IMO it doesn't get better than the original.

Etta James did a full blown gospel rendition of Randy Newman's caustic, funeral dirge "God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind). It has to be the most perverse gospel music ever done. And that makes all the difference.

Hmmmm...piqued my interest here...I must check this one out! thank you...

It is impossible for me to hum or mumble the tune "Me And Bobby McGee" w/out hearing Janis Joplin in my head. Heck, I even hear her when I listen to Kris K., The Dead, or others doing the number. She owns this one and I do believe Kris K. would agree.
