Any Reel guys interested in a tape swap?

Ok folks, I’ve given this some thought and I will agree to organize a swap. BUT: if you sign up for this swap, you agree to the following rules of the road:

1. Shipping will be in priority mail flat rate padded envelopes (you can get these either online or the post office, for free, fine to reuse the prior one as long as it’s intact).

2. We will ship on Tuesdays EVERY WEEK. That means people will have the tape on Thursdays, and will have the weekend to enjoy them.

3. Tapes will be 7”, 7.5 IPS, 1/4 track.

4. To participate you must post below that you’re interested, and then PM me your full name, mailing address, and email address.

I will keep people updated as to when we will start - I will take signups for the rest of this week, ending Sunday night.

Here in the DFW Texas area we are in "Stay at Home" for two weeks. I for one ( retired and weak lungs) am not risking going to the Post Office in public until this flu has passed.
Lets hope this virus has passed in few more weeks not months.

Washington starts a 2week Stay At Home order tomorrow. I assume going to the Post Office is an essential outing but not sure, going to the store, bank, dr office is all ok.

What is everyone's thinking...Should we wait 2 weeks to start?

Consensus should be easier with a smaller group. I defer to those with reason for concern.

On the upside, it appears that transfer of cardboard and packages in general pose very low risk of transmission after 24-48 hours of travel, particularly after passing through different environments. Perhaps with a smaller group it also makes sense to keep the tape with each person for 2 weeks rather than 1 as originally planned.

My vote is lets wait two more weeks before we mail, lets see how bad the virus spreads. I too am all for two weeks to play each others tape but will roll with the flow.

Thanks trying not to catch this virus. As soon as it's safe to be in public again mail them, we should have had some free time to record. :-)

I have a collection of sealed 7" AGFA professional PEM 469 I found at a estate sale, got LUCKY. I will pick tracks from my best MOFI, QRP 45 RPM albums... Artist are from several different genre.I have upgraded my analog system from last round we were all in, except my R2R and speakers..

My TT with tubes makes my old Cornwalls sing 3D at low volume. We see how good my late Dad's ( new from 1979) Revox still records. It's been 6 years from shipping it to "Timan" at TapeHeads.oeg restored it, a complete tear down.I recorded a lot on it first year or two now play back every now and then. . Mark had it for several months waiting my turn, as he played it every day for a few weeks before he shipped it back. :-) It's has not missed a beat so far, heads still look good . I have purchased a spare set of of mint looking used heads, they are getting harder to find NOS or OEM used that has NOT been lapped. Glad you guys are still into R2R and analog.

Louis

Sounds good @LAB3
I have not been shopping for tape, sounds like you got a good deal! I have a couple NOS 7" tapes but have been using used tapes for these swaps, just using a bulk eraser. I have some Maxell UD 35-180 10.5" metal reels still in shrink wrap, I don't do much dubbing regularly but just listen to tapes I have already made.
I already made a 7" tape for this swap.

My plan is to eventually take my deck to Curt Palmer in Canada for him to give the deck a good checkup and reset.....Hoping during summer I can do this.

I also completed a tape a couple of weeks ago. Don't want any spoilers, there are some good sounding tracks but mostly I got nostalgic. I picked cuts representing milestones relevant to equipment, music and experience of my youth. There's a story behind them all. Think less demonstration and more of a listen in a darkened room beside 3 fingers of Scotch. Intermission if you need it at the reverse foil.

I have about 2-300 6” tapes with very high quality recordings from the 60s through the late 70s, with some 80s and early 90s recordings also.

A lot of them are like 2 hour radio specials from the mid century with no commercials.

Greetings,

With this virus in its 8th week for me with wet cold weather in the northeast I can’t work in my yard. Got several audio projects done. Broke out my cassette decks. Splurged and picked up a Nakamichi B 300 three head deck off Bartertown. About the same time I found a case of Maxell chrome tapes at the landfill. Unopened!

Here’s the deal. I have a rare LP of the 1812 Overture. Heard on our local classical music channel. This version has a choral backup. Took 3 years to find a copy. Put it on tape. Did Beethoven’s 6th Syth with it. Anyone wanting it I will send it to you. Made one for the car on CD. Only place I use them. Will make a copy on that if anyone wants one!

Eric

Hi guys ... if this is delayed further, I may be able to participate. Still in flux on several fronts and don’t have the system with R2R set up yet ... while hope springs eternal, summer more likely.

So this thread started a number of years ago with the idea of a tape swap. Is anyone doing that now. I record on open reel tape, sm911 10.5 inch reels. I usually record at 15ips but could do 7.5 ips knowing that’s more common. I have a two track machine so only one way record and play, no reverse. Any interest from anyone?
