Any Reel guys interested in a tape swap?

Somebody suggested recording unique or hifi albums to the tape and then swapping them instead of recording mixtapes - both sound like fun. I think hearing how other peoples tapes / machines sound would be the coolest part.
 
Yeah, I’m not sure what others may consider unique or rarities. I can almost always hear something at least I haven’t heard, though may be common to others. I’m hoping the same is true in reverse.

I like the idea of full albums. I also like mix tapes with a theme.
I wonder about genres … all fair game, or certain ones most popular here?
 
And finally … maybe … I don’t want to mess up anyone else’s machine with some older used tapes (unless something recorded is actually worth sharing), and I have enough NOS/sealed tapes to use. I will post the brands/formulations to make sure everyone is ok with that.
 
Personally I wouldn't worry about someone elses tape "messing up my machine" as acetone is a wonderful compound and it's a risk I'm willing to accept. I'm running a TEAC A-4010S that I've had since my early teen years and that was during the first Reagan administration. It's been recapped and re-transistor'd and now has a set of A-3340s heads wired for 1/4T-stereo simply because it's what I had to replaced worn originals and gives me the ability to jumper them for 1/2T-stereo.

I was a broadcast student during the 1980's at a jazz station so most of what I have is the middle-of-road modern jazz recorded on either a Studor/Revox PR99-II or TEAC 25-2 which were the workhorses of the day and the turntables were Technics SP-10's, cutting edge for 1985. The tape itself came from Scotch bulk pancakes that went back to the early 80's so they're the old formula backing and none have started to shed.
 
So it appears we may have 3-6 people interested? Sounds like a manageable number and won’t take forever to complete.
Anyone interested who has run or participated in previous ones?
I have not, but willing to help.
 
that seems like the best number to have. Maybe when my crown 1/4 track is fixed I could help transfer it to 1/4 track use. I would definitely not use the crown if anyone is concerned because of the rough transport.
 
I haven't been hanging around here much lately but very much want to see a revival of the Tape Rotation. I used to routinely facilitate them in the past and will step up to get this going again. If you are interested in this, message me your name and location and lets get something going!!!
 
I'm in as well, but I've told @mkuhl2000 already I have about a week I will not be home in late Oct/early Nov. I assume we are talking the same tape specs as the previous swaps? 7" 7.5ips 4-track....?
I don't come to AK much anymore, very rare. I know @Skylab is more around Hoffman like I am....Maybe he wants in too?

I hope that’s the format. I cannot do 10” or 15ips.

Yea we did these very regularly back about 100 years ago LOL. You can go back about 150 pages and see our communications........We generally kept them for 2 weeks, which is fine. I work from home so I can spin them anytime. We had some hiccups here and there, some people lost tapes :dunno:. All my tapes were analog, all from records. And yes no 10" or 15ips, 7" reels at 7.5ips preferably.

Well, you get off easy, might be able to recycle some of yours :)
At this age, we watch a lot of movies again for the first time :rflmao:
 
Okay, so far there are 5 of us, all in the US, which is good. Currently to send a tape via Priority Mail in an envelope it's $12.90. I am not sure what media mail is but will check tomorrow. Dollar Tree has a 2 pack of bubblewrap envelopes that fits a 7" tape perfectly. I have noticed that in the last few years, Media Mail has been faster than in years past. I routinely get stuff from the west coast in 3-5 days here in Cincinnati. So we could use Media Mail and see how that works out to start with on a 2 week rotation and if there is a problem, we just adjust the time. With only 5 of us that shouldn't be a problem. 7" reels at 4-track - 7.5ips - 1800' (2 sides at 45/48 mins each) if possible - whatever content you wish, if you want to feature a whole album, go at it! Lets see when everyone has a tape ready to mail out and then we can set a day that we forward on. Generally it's within a 2 week period, you mail a tape, get a tape, listen and mail out again till your tape makes it back to you. Let's get those tape decks fired up guys! We'll give a few more days to see if anyone else wants to join.
