Any Soundcraftsmen owners in here?

Love my Soundcraftsmen A5001 250wx2 Sounds fantastic and drives my 901s to extreme volumes very clearly but there is hardly any info on the web about these at all.
Does any one know a good tech to send one too to just have it gone through to replace caps and check the insides out and bring back to spec ?
i dont see the a5001 amp hardly ever come up in threads, any info on this amp i would appreciate. I got it off ebay for aprox $150.00 was a great buy in my opinion. i would love to have one more exactly like it !

If you can get it to me I would be willing to recap it for you. I am located in the Twin Cities MN

I have the THICK owner/instruction manual for the DX4000 series preamps.
I have the DX4000 and DX4200. Wonderful sounding *nonsounding* gear.
I've had numerous amps, and am primarily listening to the PA5001 + Luxman C-383 preamp right now.
Lemme find that manual.
I should make at least one copy to go with the DX4000, not much more trouble to make two copies, but it is at least 50 pages .... (not cheap for a poor boy like bully). But two pages would fit on 8-1/2x11 so not bad.

Or you could have it scanned to a PDF file. I believe Staples does that service.

I've got an EQ (in my sig) and I'd really love to try out that big A5002 power amp. It is so pretty...

Bully, I'd love a copy of that DX4200 manual if you have time! That or mail it to me and I'll scan them both as a pdf file and send it back to you. I'll pay postage both ways, too! :)

The amplifier indeed has headroom. It is 2 ohms per channel stable and, will tolerate 1 ohm per channel but, the wattage is reduced significantly.

205 watts per channel @ 8 ohms

300 watts per channel @ 4 ohms

450 watts per channel @ 2 ohms

Woops,I didn't mean to say it had no headroom, just that the company says the rating is 205 continuous.I've never had mine on the bench,so I can't verify what it will do.
I was thinking the output rating into a 4ohm load was 375 watts for a PM-840 (I no longer have the manual) So much for my memory:D
Gotta say that I liked the idea of the MOSFET power supply in these.I don't think I burned near as much power as I would have with a conventional PS.

I knew Ralph Yeomans when Soundcraftsmen was a going concern and also while he owned Atlantic Stereo down in Costa Mesa.

Wish I had service lit.

I have a mint AE2000 that needs one slider knob (looks like the knob on the DX4200 in the first post), and have never had any success finding one.

Anybody have a donor unit or a knob?

I have an "excellent conditions" CX4xxx from Ebay that arrived DOA. I've been meaning to try and figure it out but most likely it's not worth messing with. I've considered parting it out but I suppose I could sell it honestly stating its current state of dysfunction. I also have two DC2215s that I came into for very short money. All have the same slider knobs.

I'll give it some thought, but I'd rather not toss more SC equipment on the junk pile if I can help it!

How about you PM me when you are ready....

Alright sounds good ty ....looks like the bike sale is going through this next week (i already have a check in hand to hold it) due to road conditions (buyer lives in another county and needs to trailer it)..so maybe some time later this month. this gives me time to find another amp to listen too while its away , it is the only amp i have at the moment .

Hi All,
I have 2 Pro-Power 4s, a Pro-Power 1, a MA5002 (old one with analog meters) and a broken PCR800 (dead channel in storage). Love them all!

I sold Soundcraftsmen when I worked at a stereo shop during high school. Soundcraftsmen used a Pro-Power 4 to do light tack welding at trade shows to show how durable they were. I can attest to that as I had a very old set of speakers that I later learned had shorted crossovers. They played and sounded fine, but the house lights dimmed and the meters pegged at a relatively moderate volume. A quick test revealed that the speakers only had around .1 ohm impedance! I would have never even noticed if I just played them at moderate volume levels.

There is a site www.soundcraftsmen.com that has an archive of a lot of their schematics. Might be helpful to some of you.

Have a great one!
Mike

Soundcraftsmen Amp

I have 21 of the Soundcraftsmen Pm860 Amps that I use with my 8 Channel Surround sound system. I put this system togeather in the 90's, all the Amps are Bridge. All of my speakers are Bi amped, the Speakers are 4 each ESS 1D and 1C with a midrange added to each of them. Bough HI and Low drivers are 4 homs. These Amps handle these speaker very well.:music:
The PM860 has 6 output transistors per channel and the 800 has 4. The briding circuit for these Amps is the same as used on the ProPower 10. Bass is hadle by 4 ESS 12" woffers and 1 18" supper low sub.

I have some Soundcraftsmen gear

Another little question. Does your power company send you a nice Christmas card with a complimentary gift certificate?

My electric utility has a buy one get one free arrangement with me. If I can make one month's payment, then they'll give me a pass the next month.

That way I can buy food.

Soundcraftsman RP-2215-R

I just picked up this baby as part of a package deal. It is in very good condition, and has the wood side panels. I didn't really need another EQ as I have a very nice ADC Sound Shaper 110 already in place. I knew that Soundcraftsman were expensive back in the day from the colorful ads they placed in Stereo Review.

I have the PE-2217 preamp/EQ and the MA5002 power amp (with the meters).

I also have another EQ/Analyzer thing, but it's in storage right now, and I don't remember the number (I think it has a 5 or 25 in it...?). You plug a mic into it, and it generates pink noise and blue noise and purple noise (well, something like that :D) to help you adjust everything to suit your room. What I did was tweak the settings using it (still not sure I really used the right kind of microphone?! :dunno:), and then set the PE-2217 up to match where the settings were on the analyzer, as a starting point for fine-setting the 2217.

If you want to have some fun with these, look for the set-up (double) LP that Soundcraftsmen made for dialing these in. There are easier ways to do it today, using a laptop, but it is fun to do it the "old fashioned" way, as people did when these units were new.

I'd agree with what has been said: these things sound NICE :music:  ... the weak spot on the preamp being the phono stage. The MA5002 is a delightful powerhouse; it is one of my favorite amps, and will remain so until I bring home the Yamaha 101M. :D

The veneered particle-board case on the PE-2217 leaves a bit to be desired, though. Mine is "okay", but showing its age a bit. One day I might make a nicer case for it (and perhaps something for the amp, to match, although you have to allow enough airflow for the power amp).

I think they held down the price on the cabinet, but NOT on the things that mattered sonically. Ever look inside one? Mostly point-to-point hand wiring of (for the time) excellent components, the kind of thing you expect to see in a McIntosh or the like ... and all hand-built in the USA, back when the workers all seem to have taken pride in their work. They were good quality products!

The problem I have with this Soundcraftsmen stuff is that I like it enough that I don't want to get rid of it, but I've already got better preamps and soon will have a better power amp... I no longer want to collect stacks of gear, so perhaps one day I'll have to (reluctantly) pass this on to someone else. But if I do, I'll probably miss it!
