Any stereo stores in Amsterdam?

Looks like I'll be spending a week in Amsterdam next month. Anybody know of any cool places that might sell old stereo stuff? Or how 'bout any cool flea markets, junk stores, pawn shops, etc?

Flea market down by the university was really cool some years ago when I spent a bit of time in and out of Amsterdam. Also, back then, there were a series of nice LP and CD stores all in a row. Sorry I cannot for the life of me remember exactly where they were outside of being walking distance from the city center.

Don't forget the museums and the beer - all excellent.

Cheers,

David

That sounds like a ton of fun! Tell us all about it when you get back, please!!!

There's a big flea market (although it's commercial) near the City Hall, the 'Stopera'. You also could check out the Fame music store behind the Dam. Fame will be closing in january, so it's probably your last chance to visit.

I found a great vintage audio shop near the Jordaan when I was there a few months ago. Unfort. I didn't get the name, or exact street. It was a small-ish shop, with stairs to go a little below ground level.

Lots of great euro tube equipment and speakers. He mentioned he sold online too. Would love to know the name of it if anyone can find it/or knows.

Thanks ya'll! That shop near Jordaan sounds like my kinda place. I'll try and find it. Fame is going out of business? Wow...maybe some sales are taking place. I would sure love to pick up some Francoise Hardy discs at a decent price. Beer? Oh yes! There is an amazing beer-only shop just steps from Fame. Give me that Weiss (wheat) beer...and give me gallons of it!

A couple of months back when I was there, the big flea market on Waterlooplein had 2-3 different stalls selling records. Fair selection and pricing, but nothing really to write home about. It is worth a visit, however.

If you're in the flea market mood, the Albert Cuypmarkt the Oud-Zuid district of the city (a couple of blocks on the opposite side of downtown from the Heineken brewery) is a fun visit. It is more food oriented, but is quite large and interesting.

Make sure to take in the Van Gogh Museum, one of the world's great museums IMHO. Get tickets in advance online or from your hotel to avoid the ticket line at the museum. Also, if you're interested in the Anne Frank House, buy tickets online well beforehand. It's small and sells out well in advance.

All great tips...Just don't forget to visit...ahem...coffee shop and after that go happily shopping for stereo.
Great city by the way!
Oh, and don't forget to try herring with beer! Yummy!

As a dutchman, I'm happy to learn that the current major is finally cutting down those coffeeshops to a bare minimum. Amsterdam became something else then the beautifull city it is. Way too much 'travellers'. Make sure to walk through the red light district as well... it will be closed down; for good reasons like the coffeeshops. Despite all that, it's perfectly safe place to hang around, plenty of good pubs, restaurants. Visit the nearby city center of Haarlem as well (to which Harlem in New York is called after), one of my favorate old towns. Just 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam central station. Both railways stations are monuments by itself. Go in the big church at the central market of Haarlem, plenty of remains of the 16th and 17th century, like stained glass windows showing the ships and colonists leaving to the americas.

The famous Blue Note record shop (jazz label) in the city center closed down 2 years ago...

And don't forget the fries with mayonaise sauce: no equal exist outside Holland (ok, the Belgians do it damned well as well).

Looks like it's time to resurrect this thread. I'll be going to Amsterdam next month as well as Brussels. What did you learn in 2011? Does anyone have updates they can clue me in on? My wife is excited about tulip season, I'm thinking audio....crazy,huh? lol

Thanks

I was there a couple years ago and thought it was funny they served chocolate drinks (like Chocola) at the coffee shops.
A few minutes later I understood- the chocolate milk serves to attenuate your buzz a bit from their very potent product.

Wish I could help on new music/audio shops, but I haven't been there in a long time. Went back in '95 and had the friggin' time of my life though. That was the place for me alright. The people the attitude, the scenery (the coffee ;) ), the beer, the women (rather-tall though), etc., etc. I LOVED the Van Gogh Museum, plus I even found time to sit in with some local musicians while I was there.
