Yes, you would need two converters and two stereo amplifiers if you want all channels to be higher power. Yes, you could just use one converter to add a higher power external stereo amplifier, for say the front channels, and use the Sanyo to drive the surround speakers.
EDIT: It seems that the converter in post #38 is a four channel unit. If you used that one, you would only need one converter for all four channels.

Yes, that is the way you would hook up the converters. One converter module for the front speakers and a second the surround speakers or ->
