It exists -- I've been to a couple of PawSox games there. Basically RI is a suburb of Attleboro, MA, and a stretch of right-of-way for I-95

I know AK member Archie2 is from Little Rhody and there's a big clan of JoZmo's down in the Cranston area that we visit every summer...
...and some say I look like the former infamous Mayor of Providence R.I., Buddy Cianci, whose now serving time in the clink for some shady dealings.
I may look like him but I got more hair because he's got a rug on his head. Right now I'm SURE they not letting him where his piece so he's as bald as an eagle!

My Dad's from RI and I take the wife and kids to Newport very frequently.
It's a beautiful, friendly place (well, most of it is

I lived for a few years in the Providence Rhode Island area during the early 1980's. Bought my first house in Pawtucket, which is adjacent to Providence to the north.
Providence is a big College town with several famous universities like the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown and Johnston and Wales (SP?). In those days there was a lot of night life and entertainment. Lupo’s Heartbreak hotel downtown had a lot of great acts. And one of the all-time great dives, the Met Café had live music 7 nights a week with a $1 cover charge and a 50 cent pint of Narragansett beer. The Met was on Friendship Street. Only in Providence is Friendship a one way street.
Providence is one of the oldest towns in New England. It was founded by Roger Williams. He left the Puritans in Massachusetts because he thought they were too liberal. As a result the area has a lot of Puritan names. One of the major streets through town is Hope Street. It has a bus line and many ads for apartments would state the location as “Off Hope.” There was a kind of running joke that half the college students in Providence lived off hope.
Buddy was Mayor while I was there. He actually got arrested and convicted for assault and kidnapping while he was in office. Served time, and was re-elected Mayor after he got out. Eventually he was convicted on some sort of racketeering charges. Now what's not to like about Rhode Island politics?
I have a lot of fond memories of that place. It seems like a lifetime ago.

Downtown Providence has undergone a phenomenal transition since I was a student there in the late '70s/early '80s. I went back for my 25th reunion last year and was stunned at how pretty it has become. Back in the day, it was a pit.
I had heard that Providence went through a renaissance and rebirth. I haven’t been back since the mid 80’s. I'd like to see it again someday. I worked in Mansfield by the way.pbda said:
Buddy was quite a character. You would sometimes see him downtown at night riding a police horse. His first conviction was a result of him roughing up his former wife’s boy friend. The assault occurred in a city owned limo.
The conviction that finally brought him down was based on a woman that paid him several thousand dollars to give her son a city job. He got fired and she wanted her money back. When he declined the refund request, she blew the whistle.
At one point, the Paw Sox set the record for the longest baseball game in history, more than 30 innings. They played all night and called the game at dawn. The finished it the next afternoon in one inning. I don't know if the record still stands. And yes you can drive I-95 diagonally though the whole state from the Connecticut line to the Mass line in under 45 minutes.mhardy6647 said:

What got me was how COLD the Ocean was in July...I'm used to Pawley's Island in South Carolina, in July you can about soft-boil an egg in the water there....at night it got "airish", as we say here-a light windbreaker would have been nice.I told Lauriann I HAD to stick my feet in the Ocean-she kinda grinned. I did, got in up to my knees-that was quite enuff, thank you very much. Newport was VERY nice-all the Mansions, upper-crust blue-blood New England types. I now know why they call 'em "Blue-Bloods"-Its so damn COLD up there all the time...<grin>
