I was. Until the Phase Linear 200wpc power amp I had blew it's self up from the outputs to the driver stage, and took my speakers with it.

The model 200 series 2. They have a slim chassis with just a pilot light on the front and rack handles. If it had been a 400 or 700, I would have repaired it.

Back at ya! I was com/nav/ECM on the F-111F. The timing couldn't have been better for OS deployment in the military, for a stereo enthusiast IMO. I still have most of my rack from back then, regrettably I did sell the Dragon.

The 200II was far more stable than the original 200. Kinda surprised it took out speakers as it has an output relay. Relay probably welded the contacts

It did that and much more. I've never seen another amplifier fail that completely.

In the fancy living room, C-1, M1.0, DTL-200, TX11 driving Forte 1s. The preamp and amp are modded, the Fortes have Crites crossovers and titanium tweeters.
In the man cave listening area, 4000t, M1.5, TX-11, Yamaha CD changer driving Polk SDA 2s, or Cerwin Vega DX9s. Again, the Carver gear is modded by Nellion, the SDAs have been completely rebuilt w/ dreadnaught mods, the CVs have new crossovers and midranges.
I’m 61 and spent most of my time in aviation or blowing stuff up/shooting. I’m very happy with my systems, they sound great to me and my friends.

I'm considering buying either a Carver 900 or a Carver AVR 100, both good shape. Is one of these appreciably superior to the other de novo, or are they pretty much similar in performance? I've read a bunch of negatives about Carver gear, and a bunch of positives from people who really like Carver gear. Trying to discern which one is worth my attention and money. They are priced right, by the way. Need a little steering from an experienced user, thanks.
The specs are similar, with a slight edge for the AVR 100, but I suspect that it doesn't translate into an audible difference. As I mentioned above your post, my lower-power receiver from the same era is still going strong. My interpretation of Carver's reputation is that the positives are clever and economical circuit design--he consistently got more watts per dollar than anyone else, for example. The other side is that he used weird names for some of his innovative ideas, such as "magnetic field amplifier" for the power supply design that gave more watts per dollar. Some people were put off by the weird names, and some people had a preference for tried and true circuit design.

I have a 900 "Receiver" that has been a great performer. I had to replace the output relays (fairly easy fix) but otherwise pretty reliable. Love the industrial look as well.
I also had an MXR130 receiver but I sold it to a friend.
I didn't need that much power and he's a huge Black Sabbath fan. (Likes loud music.) He loves it and it has been trouble free for him.

I had a buddy in the Air Force that bought his stereo system at the Ramstein Audio Club in 1988-- he got one of the Carver 400-T cube amps and a set of Bose 501's...he thought it was the best sounding stereo on the planet... All I can say is it sounded the same no matter where you were in his house: muddy to under water ! He did buy a nice Denon spaceship turntable, but it couldn't help the weak sound output of the cube and the 501's.
I worked with another guy at the same time that bought a more conventional model Carver M-0.5t amp & preamp (a C-1 IIRC ??) and he had nothing but trouble with them, always in for some repair or another.

Some folks are used the angry man forums.
They learned somewhere that insults = adult discourse.
Maybe it just takes a little time to get accustom to AKs gentler way of throwing other posters under the bus.
