Anyone know anything about this speakers?

Indeed!

The thing that bothers me about this kind of product is that the customer has no way of knowing if any two pair of speakers are alike. They read a rave review and run down to the nearest Best Buy to get a speaker that might well have been built with an entirely different tweeter, or even in an entirely different factory. So, even if the first batch of the speakers was excellent, and completely deserving of the buzz, you wind up with 2 or even 3 or 4 variations on the market, all being discussed as if they were the same.

On the other hand, the customer who pays more for an entry level speaker from a reputable brand is (presumably) paying for attention to detail and a real commitment to quality control. When they read a review of their speaker, hear one in a dealer or at a friend's house, etc., they can be assured that what they buy will perform the same way. That is NOT the case with these mass market, special deals that come around every few months.

I'm sure your right there, Ken. Who knows what you are getting after the first round or two. It's all good fun for $30-$50 though if perspective and reality is maintained. Also, it's funny how quickly many of these speaker du jour deals that start off as a seemingly good value for the dollar attain unwarranted Giant Killer status as the performance reports roll in.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I did buy a pair to play with for myself when they were $39.00 Who the heck knows how similar or dissimilar they were to the original stock when I bought my pair.

Ahh yes,... the wonderful and magical world of the internets ;)

Oh, I've bought and enjoyed several pair over the years. I agree with your thoughts. In fact, some of my take on the situation comes from tracking down the manufacturing details for a pair of Insignias (?) that I liked, and was astonished about the price of.

The situation only begins to worry me as the speaker enters the Feeding Frenzy phase of life, and well-meaning people start to recommend building inexpensive reference systems around speakers that are significantly different from the initial examples.

To me, White Van is usually tall tower speakers, very glossy lacquer finish, drivers lined up on the front, and a name plate somewhere. They are made to appeal to the masses with big screen TV's to set them on either side of. These things have none of those features, and are so weird looking that I took them for something entirely different, possibly even high quality, at least at first glance. Obviously there are greater complexities of speaker making and marketing that have been revealed in this thread, so not being White Van does not prove they are not a cheap piece of crap. :D

There are also speakers with a lot of drivers that aren't Kabuki. And so on.

bshorey - the speakers are in Arizona. I'm hoping to meet the person soon but we've been playing email tag. I will update you when I get them. At the very least they are worth the thread discourse. Will take pictures and review. Thank you all for responding and sorry haven't been able to get on-line recently. Crossing fingers that no one acquires them before I do.

Seller informs me that there's a woofer located at the bottom, mid on top and as you can see tweets are front firing. They are 'bookshelves' according to the seller.

I'm always looking for 'the ones' or unique (but good sounding) speakers that fits within the budget (albeit this a bit on the high side). I've had experienced the white van in person and politely declined but was entertained. No, white vans don't necessarily be large speakers, I've seen bookshelves and home theater packages. They are also advertising on the net, selling on ebay, etc., so when people do a google search they are awed at the amazing deal they are getting. Thanks to AudioKarma I've been educated and avoided a few. I acquired a pair of WV speakers in a trade and would say they're more like flea market quality/price speakers.

I've tried speakers that were highly rated (omitting names on purpose to avoid debate) and most of the time have been disappointed. The speakers that have impressed me usually are the ones no one has heard of. I've got custom built bookshelf Dynaudio's and they sound absolutely amazing but my Jamo Classic 4's give them a run. I have a pair of Hales Concept Two's and just acquired the Revelation Three which I will soon do a compare/contrast. Haven't fired up my ADS L1530 and C2000 crossovers yet either (real estate issue). And one of the best speakers I've ever owned were a pair of ESS Daytona which are hard to find for sale or info. Grab these if you have the chance! Love my tiny JVC SP-UX7000 speakers, these little $20 buggers gave my Mission bookshelf speakers a run for the money. Actually, I prefered them over the Mission for looks and size, but the Missions had better lows due to their larger mid/woofer.

So, cross your fingers I get the speakers in question and I can give a proper update.

Really hope you get these and let us know how they sound!

There, see, there is a pile of short fat speakers that look like HPM-100's people are calling White Van, so my skinny tower image was apparently not universal.

The obscure ones are what I was thinking of when I first saw the ones in this thread. There are all kinds of weird ones out there and I thought, gee, someone spent a lot of time on that weird cabinet. These could be something.

Bottom woofer? Very odd to stuff 4 drivers into a cabinet that small and have the mid at right angles to the tweeter(s). It does not sound like a good design.
