Anyone know much about the Taya lp-100?

I like the way it looks but other than that I can't find much more info about it on this forum or the Internet in general. Anyone got a little more details about this thing?

Very likely a belt driven turntable made by CEC - Chuo Denki. :music:

Resembles Realistic R-8010 belt driven turntable.

I believe that was my first real turntable, bought new in I think 1977 or 1978 at a tiny audio shop in the student union building when I was at university.

Yes it probably was made by CEC and was identical to some others of the day, but I don't think the R-8010 was one of them. I can't remember what others were the same, but I definitely remember there were some. In fact a friend and I took our turntables apart and compared them side by side, but I just can't remember what his was.

Taya/Marlux TTs were manufactured by CEC as well as Realistic, Sanyo, Scott and even Marantz. Some additional info with pictures on the argument here:

I personally own a Taya DP-500/Marlux MX-86. Direct drive, dual voltage, solid construction, plinth damped by rubber feet. The cheapest part is the tonearm (usually this is common to every model). I replaced it with a Micro Seiki MA-202 and put on a Dynavector 10x5. Very nice sounding TT!:thmbsp:

Wow, good research!!!:thmbsp:

A&B Sound also had a very large record department at that store.:music:

I really miss A&B Sound. I didn't buy lps there, but many a paycheck took a beating with cd purchases.

Was Taya a Canadian brand that sold CEC products, kinda like a Noresco/Dual thing?

Japanese. One of the several brands which applied to CEC to manufacture their products.

What I meant was, was "Taya" a name that was used only(or mostly) in Canada? I used Noresco as a comparison, Dual turntables were German made, but sold by Noresco in Canada. It seems when Taya is mention here, it is mostly Canadians that respond.

A&B Sound had a very good return policy.

"keep the receipt" and they will do an exchange for another copy. :music:

Not sure about the Taya brand, you are probably correct.

No, I think Taya was kinda sub brand from Toshiba but sold everywhere around the world, sometimes as Marlux in some countries. Well...I'm Italian, as you can see, and found my Taya locally...;)

just wanted to come back and say thanks for the info. heres a bit more about the actual one im looking at:

REFURBISHED TAYA LP - 100, made by Toshiba Audio Industral in 1976, 2 speed w/ Full WOOD Plinth, Belt drive Manual with no gimmics ! Stylus condition is Excellent condition(see below tracking). All in excellent condition - sounds stunning ! Dampened tone arm lift mechanism.
The rubber mat is in excellent condition. Minor marks on the dust cover - per picture. Note below that this t/t(needle) is able to play/track at 1 gram cartridge adjustment - sounds stunning ! .
NOTE : I've added 2 screws in order to clamp down the motor while in transport. It'll come with the belt on the plater & you'll have to remove it, remove these screws(I'll mark them), install the plater & then the belt; Then you're ready to roll !

REFURBISHING : Installed new Belt, oiled motor, adjusted Mechanism weight. Adjusted for zero balance & set for 1gm weight. I've supplied RCA output cables - ground was there. ALL cleaning Inside & Outside.

the seller wants $75 (not sure if thats a fair asking price or not) and i've still yet to find a stereo receiver/amp to connect it to...

Thanks for reporting back.

That sounds like an ok price, but that would also depend on the cartridge included. While he claims that the
Stylus condition is Excellent
, what does that mean?

Is it clean and straight, but has 2000 hours on it? Without very close examination from someone with expertise and the right tools you won't see wear. But if it is a good cartridge that part alone could be worth the price of the package, even if you have to buy a new stylus for it.

It sounds at least like the seller has some idea of how to package it for shipping but how much extra will that shipping cost? Turntables are inherently fragile, so local pickup is ALWAYS advisable.

I have a sentimental attachment to that TT (see my earlier post), but there are others out there too.

Has the asking price been that much since the original post? If so you definitely have bargaining room!

shipping is no issue as the seller is local to me.

long story short, I was actually looking at a taya Lp-100 on kijiji for $50 when I had originally started this thread. When I emailed them asking for details (year of make, stylus/arm etc) the buyer has no idea. Due to the lack of detail I didn't end up getting it.

Fast forward to now and I find a new $75 listing with much more detail (as outlined in my last post). seems strange that he omitted stylus/arm info though considering the person clearly has more knowledge about turntables.

I've also been looking at a local sale of a thorens td-145 which the buyer specifies as having a Shure Me97HE cartridge and N70B stylus. Those names and model numbers currently mean nothing to me but it's priced at $130. From what I read, it seems thorens TTs are a good buy so I may go that route instead.

I have a Taya LP-100 here, cleaning it up for a local thrift shop I help out at. It is missing the anti-skate weight. Anyone have one and can tell me what the mass is?

Funny you should say that Van_Isle. I now have a Taya CP-250 here which looks even more like the one I had at university. I might keep this one for sentimental reasons, but it also is missing the weight and I could use that info too.

Well this is not good. The spindle was completely frozen with dried-up lube. Looks like someone continued to play it with the frozen spindle. I have it cleaned up and turning wonderfully now but the platter hole is distorted so the platter rocks and wobbles horribly. Probably the death-wobble for this one!

So sad, but you have done your best! :sigh:
