They seem to be the Centaur. They were the first and the middle sized model of the Apogee hybrid series. There were Major and Minor Centaurs also. It looks like they are sitting on either black boxes or some custom subs. Where the wood grain ends is where the Original Centaur ends.
Check the link below.

Pfffffttttt......Get Them!!!!! If you don't like them I'll take them off you're hands......:D

The base contains the woofer. It is 8 inch in the Centaur. The base is part of the system and is not custom.

Not so. The woofer cabinet is next to the ribbon tweeter. It's a tall box attached to the back of the front panel. Check the link I posted. I know someone who has a pair. That base looks suspiciously like the sub woofer base that was part of the Mini Grand system.

Check the link in my first post. There is an Audiophile Review reprint that has a picture of the front and rear of the Centaur.

yes, after being pointed to the right speaker, the "box" they are sitting on does look "extra". I am going to guess stands after seeing pics of the Mini Grand as they looked like they had speaker grills on the front of them.
Yes, I will hopefully be there as soon as they are available for sale.
Has anyone ever heard a pair ? Better yet anyone ever hear a pair of those and a pair of ML SL3 to compare ?
They sure are purdy.....

Apogee Centaur thoughts ? Anyone ever hear a pair ?

Anyone ever hear a pair of Apogee Centaur speakers. Would be the model in the middle, just the Centaur (not the Minor or Major).
Curious how or if they would compare to a middle of the line pair of ML SL3 ?
One review I read said the ML Sequel was more "refined" and the SL3 is a step up from the Sequel. Obviously someone else could totally disagree and like the Centaur better.
Basically I am just looking for some fairly descriptive reviews on what they sound like if possible. Any help appreciated.

Very good reputation for sound, but also for being hard to drive -- they really need good quality amplification.

The Centaurs aren't that hard to drive, they were designed to be used with more 'real world' amps. They do like a lot of power though.
The cabinet at the base is custom: as said, the woofer is placed next to the ribbon, roughly at the middle. The purpose is to minimalize phase-differences at the listening position. So depending on the crossover-frequency it could extend the low end at the cost of a lesser stereo image.
Just guessing though: I haven't heard them.

 if those are the 10.2's, they're no slouch

hey yeah I was half joking but also I agree with you. my favorite Bose speaker looked just like that though I'm not sure of that ones particular model number. I like some of Bose speaker's, used a pair of powered Roommates for years and loved them.

Grab those Apogees!!! I'm serious! They are very rare! The sound will blow your mind. I wish I had a pair of any Apogees. A aquiantance of mine has a pair of Apogees he was playing for me last week. We sat there for an hour listening to them, it was heaven.

I'm going to pass on them. After doing some research, while they do seem to be a nice speaker, just really don't need another pair of speakers like that sitting in my garage.
They are very rare!
actually, doing research on them there was another pair on CL about an hour from me.

Anybody wants to know any details on those Apogees, PM me.....a buddy of mine designed them when he worked at Apogee. I'll shoot him an email.

Resurrection...

I'm looking at some Slant 8's and a pair of Centaur (middles, not major or minors) for about the same cost. What are ye thoughts on the two?

I have a feeling the concensus will be the Slant 8's! :smoke:
