Mike from HVHiFi contacted me regarding a gent who needed his AR's worked on, so I took them on.
Serial numbers 71894 & 72111. Dates are Feb 6,1973 on the mid, Jan 22, 1973.
Basically they were in decent shape, with one top rear corner bashed, and one small spot on a bottom. The surrounds were shot. There were also some 15ohm L-pads installed. The original woofer had been coated with something, I'm guessing in an attempt to preserve the cracking surround. Someone had been in the other speaker back in 1982 or so. One woofer was replaced with a service replacement which would have been used in the series 9's according to Roy C. I decided to pull them and replace them with original pots, which Roy sent me in perfect condition. Otherwise I would have had to add a 25 ohm resistor parallel on the mid range L-pads to equal the other untouched speaker. The pots were in the other speaker were in near perfect condition! The caps were Spragues and the block 6uf cap. I replaced the Spragues with Benic npe's, 150 & 50uf and used a poly 6uf for the tweeter. The surrounds came from Simply Speakers. They have the correct surround for the 3a woofer with the 5/8ths dia. roll.
Caps and replacement pots have been installed, cabs were sanded, and veneer repairs completed, and I'm on the 5th application of Watco's. Here's some pics. Theoriginal grills are pretty good and I'm leaving them as is.
