Just brought home my first AR turntable. Good condition and plays well but the cueing lever does not function - no lift. Easy fix?IMG_5252.jpeg

With good advice and a closer examination, the cueing plunger does go up and down, but not high enough to affect the tonearm. Apparently the tonearm height can be adjusted. Have to research that now.

If I recall correctly, rotating the top of the cylinder the plunger it is in adjusts its height. It's been a long time since I used my XB 77, but I've had to adjust the height with it and/or my regular XB, and I remember having to do that. Just slowly turn the top of the cylinder, and watch to see whether the plunger goes up or down as you do. Good luck!

Bingo! That was the solution to the problem. Thank you, Adam!

Glad it worked out for you! :) I'm not sure why they go out of adjustment in that way, but at least they made it relatively easy to adjust. The AR tonearms are a bit awkward, but well designed for the most part. Just be very careful with the plastic threads on the headshell, as it doesn't take much to strip them. Fortunately, there are reproductions available on eBay, but they're generally in the style of the version used on the XA and XB. I think the headshell on the XB 77 is lighter than those, but I'm not entirely sure.

If the Ortofon stylus is original, there should be a model number on the right side as facing the front. If there's no number there, it is probably an aftermarket replacement of some sort (still have one in its plastic box; no idea off-hand what type it is). My own XB 77 is equipped with a Signet (Audio-Technica) TK-7E cartridge which sounds nice, though replacement styli are not terribly common, as the housing is not equivalent to regular A-T styli as is the case with some Signet cartridges.

So today I did some maintenance. I removed the belt, boiled and cornstarch the belt. (Sorry no talc. I'll buy a new belt soon anyway.) and cleaned the drive platter rim. I cleaned and lubed the platter and tonearm spindles and wells. The cueing plunger cover did not seem to want to unscrew so I'll leave that for another day. I checked the weight of the needle with a digital scale and it read 2gm.

Problem: This record player skips on albums that my other TT plays no problem. (It did so yesterday as well, before today's maintenance, so nothing I did today is the cause.)

Thoughts?

Does the tone arm move easily up and down? you may have the one of two things going on, 1) the tonearm spindle shaft that screws into he bottom of the pivot housing might
be too tight . Back it out a 1/2 to 3/4 turns. And check again, 2) the tone arm pivot screws may be too tight as well. this are on either side. loosen them a half turn each and
check, but not too much. Check the play in them.

the XB doesn't have a thread in pivot post. it a one piece design with a aluminum block at the top of the post holding the delrin inserts. The XB 77 post is unique to the XB line in both the bushing it turns in, and its thrust end.

I can confirm that the tonearm post has no ball bearing on the bottom, rather an attached, somewhat sharpened spike.
