Are soundbars and Bluetooth speakers killing hifi ?

Contrary to what is a prevailing attitude on AK, in my 50+ years with this hobby the only "audio snobs" I've ever met were all salesman in high end audio stores.

I consider myself to be an "audiophile". Frankly, I don't care what others like and use. If you're happy with what you've got, good for you. That's your business and no-one else's.

I try to spread the Gospel of Good Audio without knocking on doors like Jehovah's Witnesses. If you visit me and ask I'll gladly play something for you. If you express no interest I won't turn on my system.

I'm riding into the sunset, all guns blazing, with far too many giant speakerboxes, ridiculous amount of overlap and overkill concerning the cds and albums, and I don't give a damn. If I decide to let it go, I will. Until then, enjoy the toys.

I knew one audio salesman who sold systems to couples by sending the husband out for a coffee or whatever and then demonstrated the gear to the wife.

I enjoy my soundbar. It does sound better than the TV speakers and, since it turns on when the TV does, my wife can use it with no problems at all.

When the weather permits, nothing beats being out on my deck with my JBL Charge 4 bluetooth speaker.

So I eliminated my bias, listened, and am glad I did.

I grew up with consoles that sounded fine, but there was no way to plug the TV into it nor could I take it outside.

Neil is right. Sure, quality systems are nice to have...very..very nice. But music is everywhere and good music can be heard and appreciated even thru the crappiest radio. A lot of it is in the mood. There are few things as enjoyable as a leisurely drive with the radio on....that said, here's an excerpt from an article....

Neil Young is crankier than a hermit being stung by bees. He hates Spotify. He hates Facebook. He hates Apple. He hates Steve Jobs. He hates what digital technology is doing to music. “I’m only one person standing there going, ‘Hey, this is [expletive] up!’ ” he shouted, ranting away on the porch of his longtime manager Elliot Roberts’s house overlooking Malibu Canyon in the sunblasted desert north of Los Angeles. The dial thermometer at the far end of the porch indicated that it was now upward of 110 degrees of some kind of heat. Maybe the dial was stuck.

When you hear real music, you get lost in it, he added, “because it sounds like God.” Spotify doesn’t sound like God. No one thinks that. It sounds like a rotating electric fan that someone bought at a hardware store.

Which has more meaning and depth......An Ancient statue that was hand carved....or a 3D printed copy of that statue?
 
I remember the Pono from Mr. Young. It always reminded me of a Toblerone Chocolate bar. IOW, the shape was downright stupid.

Neil Young is just a bitter old hippie with serious anger issues. Nothing good comes from being around that kind of toxic personality.....or even reading about him.
 
Oh and every few months someone posts about how hated soundbars are. They are just another straw man to bash...along with Bose and Radio Shack. It is the same type of BS as when whiners post that people with vintage receivers think they are the best and how they harass the cool people with top of the line stuff. It's all fantasy and just used to get attention.
