Are soundbars and Bluetooth speakers killing hifi ?

I love how you feed me those straight lines. :beerchug:

This very thing happened in my hometown more times than I can remember. Another time there was a rag or piece of cloth on the edge of the road, and instead of picking it up or painting over it they painted around it. There was this funny little jog in the line at that spot for about a decade before they repainted the road!

On a serious note, I wonder if it actually is :dunno:. I see both sides of it. 1) people that are going to get into Hi-Fi are going to find their way anyhow. 2) Some who would end up in the Hi-Fi world stop at good enough because new stuffs be putting out good SQ for short money and a small form factor.

As with almost everything the answer is probably somewhere in the middle :naughty:
What are these soundbar, Bluetooth and shelf systems low fi ??
Receivers cost more now then 8 years ago why’s prices rising ? Could that keep more out of hifi :lurk:

In the big scheme of things proably low-fi and mid-fi (whatever those are). But many sound great "for what they are". its about having realistic expectations given their physical limitations.

Ummm, inflation :dunno:...its been around for awhile. That said this is a great time for the hobby, you can get into great SQ for much less money than when I was your age.

Thats a really good place to be middle of the road. Hmmm or maybe not :dunno:

I was just there reading and laughing out loud at the left and right wackos going at it... It may end up being more entertaining than here

Both sides are equally rabid, sad for the country really :(

A soundbar in the room in which we watch television was helpful in an aesthetic streamlining kind of way. A good trade off. The same room has a pair of ADS L1290s wired to our primary system. That's for music. One day we'll figure out the music on TV thing.

My opinion is that soundbars and bluetooth speakers fill a need that is created by hifi seeming out of reach for the masses. Those that just want to buy something and listen to it; the ones that don't want to mess with system building, deciding between a few dozen different amps and speakers and sources. That is how Bose made a killing "buy this, plug it in and listen" They don't know what they are missing so it doesn't bother them and they didn't have to spend hours and days on research. There are very few products out there that are quick and easy that fall between the full system and the soundbar.

Audio is a complex world filled with a plentiful supply of audio snobs to dismiss and/or look down on your decision. It is a bit like every time someone asks "How about this $300 turntable" and gets a dozen different "that is junk compared to vintage, get a vintage one for the same price" responses. That only leaves a few hundred options....

We've chewed this topic quite a bit of late, but here's my opinions.

1) There's just too many distractions, entertainment-wise.
2) Marketing, lets be honest, is to women, most of which simply don't care about audio, Home Theater, none of that. @hjames of course, you, Frannie and many others here are the exception to the rule. Women, by and large, DETEST monkey coffins. They want something to sound good and disappear.
3) Some of these soundbars and bluetooth speakers are not bad. Eliminate your bias, and give a listen. Probably better than what most of us grew up with.

I'm riding into the sunset, all guns blazing, with far too many giant speakerboxes, ridiculous amount of overlap and overkill concerning the cds and albums, and I don't give a damn. If I decide to let it go, I will. Until then, enjoy the toys.

Licensing of all the formats, DRM, protocols.
There simply aren’t any sales my old onkyo I got near half off msrp 10 years ago . Now you gotta pay full retail $1200-1500 for something like that ? No sales ever .

soundbars claim to be 5.1-9.1 but to me they would be more like the 3 channel cinema setting . The drivers are too small and rely on sub for all there bass and mid bass . Theater dimensional
No doubt they are less hassle to set up .

My parents only use tv speakers not even a soundbar. I had pc speakers plugged in for a few years til The amp blew in the Klipch thx sub.
I have enough low end speakers they could just use for free ... if they wanted something.

some people just don’t care about audio and I’ll never understand it . Gotta respect them

I’m sure there’s things that your friends and family members are passionate about that you don’t really care about.

I like the soundbar we have for the bedroom 50in TV. It sounds nice enough, much better than the internal TV speakers. The front TV is wall mounted so it actually sounds ok so no sound bar. When we watch movies or network TV shows we turn on the Marantz AVR.

I have vintage separates and receivers and a soundbar and a modern 4K AVR. Everything has a place and a use.

Sound projectors and soundbars are not the same thing..

The projectors actually do trick your ears into thinking you have speakers behind you.. try one.. if youre into surround sound..

An awesome, fairly inexpensive option for tv viewing, especially in certain instances when running wire/cables would require major surgery to ones home..
