So, IMHO, 2325fan has a good question, how does one parse the hype?

Greater Boston Craigs list has been full of White Van adds lately, and some stalewart has been doggedly chasing them down and denouncing them at every turn. He's chased them to Worcester on the west, and Nashua to the north. Hell, the area is ripe with ignorant and acquisitive 19 year olds armed with credit cards, so it's a field ripe for picking. So what to do?

Speaking strictly for myself, I think a group road trip to visit some of such offers might be useful. Call it an AK poker ride....

Anyway, local conditions vary, this nonsense is spreading in the Boston area, and 2325fan is not paranoid, nor hallucinating (OK, I'm assuming the last )

Say what? What more proof do you want? They've a very reputable brand, sold at numerous respectable businesses and have gotten many great reviews over the years. If that doesn't satisfy you I have no clue what will.

Supertower line of speakers obviously is not white van.

And you miss my point. Definitive uses (and might as well be the model for) exactly the advertizing advance made for white vans. 2325fan's point is a valid one, it is increasingly difficult to differentiate between fraud and friend.
I'm sorry I was unable to make clear my indifference to Def Tech's actual value, I simply employed them as a rhetorical device.

Brent71; I agree with you, but: In todays world any claim in advertising is assumed valid, and that is, I think, exactly what 2325fan is commenting on.

DaVinci's and such are available everywhere, and near as I can tell the market for trash is expandiing faster than that for quality equipment, and the methods employed for sales make it difficult to distinguish fact from fluff. That is the world the white vans dwell and thrive in.
Nothing in the world is new, I suppose, but it's still worth bitching about it

Definitive Tech is one of the high end manufactuerers that started from the ground up. The owner is Sandy Gross and if you were a kid in the 60's you might remember him as a champion slot car racer and factory sponsored team member. Here's some info from their site.....

I've met Sandy before -not that he would remember. We sold Def Tech's and I owned the BP-10's. Loved them. I sold them to one of the US's premier organists -they have wonderful, deep bass that few speakers in their price range ($1000/pr) could match. We sold Def Tech straight up against Mirage. Def Tech held there own if not out sold Mirage. I probably prefer Mirage (M1si, M3si) in an audiophile sense, but Def Tech is definately more "fun" when it comes to loud, cranking music).

My brother owns a pair of BP-2000's. These were their first with the built in powered sub. It wasn't a speaker to hook up to Levinson gear (the chip sub amp kind of defeated the purpose of the No. 331 we used), but it was a great speaker nontheless. I know my brother put a lot of time into his decision. He even made a call to Def Tech and received a call back from Sandy himself.

The relation to Mirage is intentional. Sandy was a lead engineer at Polk and took a tour of the Mirage factory when looking for a position there. They showed him "Bi-Polar" and he said to himself, "I can do this by myself". Hence -Definitive Technology. Mirage never patended the term "Bi-Polar" and Def Tech and others also began to use it. At the time, the Mirage's used to be wider than deep and the Def Tech's were (and still are) deeper than wide. This lead to a different lower frequency cancellation (due to the bi-polar technology) than the Mirage's. Mirage came out with "Omni-Polar" shortly after and patended that term.

Def Tech has since been sold to Directed (who also owns a/d/s/), but Sandy is still on board. Mirage is now owned by Klipsch.

Oh, I forgot to mention that during the mid to late 90's, the speakers cabinets were manufactured by the Kimball Piano Co.

Don't know about them any more, but they were built very well.

Give me other examples of home audio speaker systems that offer a longer warranty period.

Judging a speaker just on warranty alone isn't a total indicator of quality, I'll give you that. But it's a good start.

I'm in the camp that looooaaaaattttthhhhhes Bose speakers -but even I wouldn't call them "white van speakers". No need to put a speaker in that category just because we don't like them (or, for that matter, haven't heard them).

Whether you like or dislike Def Tech's is not the issue. Many many people do and they are a highly regarded speaker manufacturer by even those who don't prefer their sound.

i stay with 70's gear only except for one eq that i have- its just my prefence

its the sound i like. just like if you only like honda cars- you wouldnt buy a toyota, im jus using it as an example. and i have never heard of this brand thats the reason i asked the question if these are those speakers. im not tryin to spark a woofer war here guys. just a simple question are these white van's ? that was all an fcrapcrap raised a good point also cuz that stuff is running wild here in the tri-state area.

was hit by 6 wheeled dump truck tee-boned on the passengers

side. it was a 74 f-350 all orniginal in this pic. 4-spd dana 60 rear

dana 40 front. when i got it off my grandfather who bought it brandnew

when it was totaled it only had 175 k on it.
