AT95e why does everyone love this?

Your statement "it's a Yamaha not a Pioneer PL-L1000" inplies that no Yamaha turntable is as good as, or better than, a Pioneer PL-L1000. That would be incorrect.

It implies no such thing. If you had read post #52 you would have seen what I was talking about. I see that Balifly has since edited his post and deleted his mistaken reference to its being a PL-L1000.

This cartridge tracks way too heavy for me, regardless of how it sounds.
In the case of the at-95e about 1.85 - 1.9gm tracking force in an arm of effective mass around the 10/11-12/13gm mark (think rega rb-250,rb-300 linn akito, linn basic, and several jelco manufactured arms from the 80s and 90's such as those found on systemdeks,AR turntables etc ) and you'll get a decent musical presentation, good tracking and a balanced sound.
The upgrade options for the stylus should contribute a bit more refinement to the performance, adding a bit more low end definition and high frequency subtletly to an already good basic presentation.
In basic guise the midrange performance on vocals(male or female),the big, dynamic bass and very decent treble makes it a bargain for those on a strict budget.
Let's not forget that it's a cheap cartridge 'starter' cartridge with a basic pseudo elliptical tip..but give it the right arm and table and there's not much to fault at the price.

I agree. I´m using one with an ATN15 needle, exguisite IMHO.

Why not use the ATN15 in an AT15 or AT20? (as intended)

They are better built bodies with advantages over the basic AT95... (and can further be improved just as the AT95 can be by potting...)

Not that I am against stylus transplants! - Just curious....

"Way" too heavy? The 95 tracks at 2 grams....not 2 pounds.

What must you think about the Denon DL-103 with a recommended tracking force of 2.5 grams?

2 grams is dead center of the recommended tracking force range for the AT95E, and is hardly excessive.

Thanks for the explanation. The edited post (#52) left your post without reference.

No problem here. If I had used the "quote" as I usually do it would have prevented the albeit, slight misunderstanding.
Back on topic...but I hope it's completed now. Getting a little tetchy.:D

That poster is just obnoxious and likes to wind people up with his posts. That's why I have him on my ignore list.

It´s just that it has been interesting to see how good the AT3400 body can be with different improvements, and with better needles, I think. It´s just more fun. So I haven´t found any need to use anything but the AT3400 lately.

Indeed, 2 grams is a light VTF !

So I have this cart on a Technics SL-1301 and found it horribly sibilant. Didn't realize it needed 2 grams of tracking force, gotta go dig it back out and reset.

The Grado Black is a great cart for the cash.

When I was putting my current system together a few years ago, this was my cart of choice. I think for a lot of people, it comes down to the price factor. For me, I had a set budget at different points, and in order to afford the deck I wanted, I had to compromise on the cartridge.

As the AT95e broke in, however, and I became acclimated to the the turntable, it became fun trying to get the best sound out of it (because the thing literally transformed after a couple of months of use).

It wasn't until I upgraded carts along the way, that I realized how limited the cart actually is, especially at handling higher frequencies and inner grooves. Is it bad? Nope. It's not the miracle worker it's sometimes made out to be, though. I raved about it at the time I used it, but that was at a time when my frame of reference was a bit narrower than it is today, having been of the mindset that my money was better spent on albums than equipment.

I think a lot of the praise also comes down to pride and that psychological thing (and the power of suggestion), that makes us hear the things we want to hear. Waiting all that time for something to be shipped, then having to admit defeat once it arrives isn't fun. I think I talked myself into liking something more than I actually did, because I wanted it to be great.

I recently gave a buddy of mine a Technics deck, and I outfitted it with an AT95E....a new one. Compared to what I use today, it was shrill and pinched. Compared to what he had, it sounds fantastic.

It's just all relative.....

If the cartridge you replaced the 95 with was the Ortofon 2M Bronze, I would expect a dramatic improvement. We're talking about several times the cost of the 95! As for the 95, you just need to spend enough time with it (by your own admission the cartridge "literally transformed").

Bronze from the 95?! I wish.... No, no...there were two in between, stepping stones, if you will...

I will always stand by the notion of it (the 95) needing a substantial breaking-in period, much more so than any I've had the pleasure of using.

my initial question has been answered. Their is a large market for the 95 from people who don't want to spend more than $50 and then convince themselves its pure awesome.

Now the punch bowl is empty, the foods all gone .. stepping away, closing the door, turning out the lights .....

With the ATN15 there is the additional advantage of the AT95 body being lower mass - which helps with the high compliance needle...

Yup - should be a very nice performer indeed... (even better with the ATN15ss...)

It's clear that the answer that the OP seeks is that everybody who thinks it's any good is deaf.

Can we just say that, and be done?
