AU-D9 for restoration

BTW: the reconditioned driver board is back in the Amplifier and dialled in perfectly.

I have also restored (recapped) the F-3259 protection board. (sorry no pictures)

There seems so little interest in this thread now - I will continue to post pictures for Peter's benefit as it is helping him with his restore.

Next up, the boards behind the front panel - leaving the EQ board until last. :)

I’m very interested, but I just had nothing to say. I sold mine over a year ago. I will be very interested in your listening impressions after the restore, and what speakers you used with it.

On my part, I found it very hard to match speakers with mine, and finally found a good match with Genesis Physics 2 Speakers. That was a match made in heaven!

John did you change out the main ice cube relay on F-3259 while you were recapping
Hi, no I haven't actually, as I haven't been able to find any information about suitable replacement relays. It uses 3 different ones, the 'cube' relay (black plastic), another that looks like a small MY4-02 type (transparent cover) - but isn't (actually it is, see a later post), and a miniature relay (for the headphones) that looks like the ones used in the AU-X1 - this one is definitely a Fujitsu. In the absence of any replacement info I was going to leave them - they work OK, but I didn't want to go to the trouble of removing them and testing them unless I had a line on replacements. I could wire in a G5V as a replacement for the miniature relay, but as I said they work ok.

Do you - or anyone - have any info on the relays? - keen to replace them if possible. ;)

Notice the wire links across the C9 position, due to the use of a purpose made quality bipolar at position C10. For the wire links I used the wire offcuts from the quality bipolars as, using wire from lesser capacitor roughens the sound considerably :D

Notice in the 'before' picture the VERY leggy (and uninsulated) leads of the mains switch snubber (brown disk) - and now in the above picture the leads have been much shortened, and are thus safer from wandering fingers. :)

One whole electrolytic capacitor changed here - don't tell me I don't show you interesting stuff :D

John, why did you use a bipolar at C10 and a wire at C9 instead of replacing those capacitors with the "normal" new capacitors? What kind of bipolar did you use?

John - that's correct - three relays:

Speaker-A (Ice cube) relay is usually a Fujitsu FRL-264 DO24 which can be replaced with your standard Omron MY4 02 24DC / FINDER 55.14.9.024.0000 and cutting off the appropriate pins

Speaker-B relay sitting under the speaker socket block is an Omron G2Z-222P - unfortunately no NEW relay currently exists with this form factor / pin layout - however there are a few sellers on that auction site who sell a drop-in replacements (search for example: Omron G2Z-222P 24V 24VDC / Ersatz Relais / Replacement Relay) - but caution advised here as due to the confined space / surrounding components etc under the speaker socket block there maybe not enough wiggle room to accommodate :dunno: if these replacements are not of the same exact base dimensions as the original

There is however an NOS Omron G4Z-2282P 24V DC which is a pin for pin direct drop in available - also available on that auction site - unfortunately the seller does not have any info on their contact rating - I have a couple, on opening up one they have single small contacts - while the original has dual finger larger contacts

The Headphone relay (lRL1) is a Fujitsu 221DO24 - unfortunately I haven't found any direct drop in pin for pin - but as you mentioned in your reply above - Omron G5V could be used as was done for the AU-X1

...also here is my solution for the trimmers on the EQ Amp & Power Supply Board F-3252

AU-D9 - Board F-3252 - (Trimmers Bourns 3266W - 12 Turns).JPG

Trimmer's are Bourns 3266W - 12 Turns

Some older designs use two regular caps hooked up in reverse polarity to one another to create a bipolar. With good modern bipolar caps there's no reason to do so. Might be the case here.

Yes, that's it - quality bipolars didn't seem to exist back then, or at least were more expensive than 2 standard ones back-to-back. But now, a purpose made audio grade bipolar is far better than 2 back to back. ;)

That is extremely helpful!!! - thank you - clearly I was wrong about the smaller transparent case relay not being a MY4-02-DC24 - I stand corrected. ;)

John, what value did you use for the replacement C9 + C10 capacitor. I think they are both 10uF 50V, so a replacement would be 5uF 100V? I could not find such a bipolar capacitor with that value.

John, thanks. I am going (again) to my local electronic shop :) Turned out the complete recap set I got is not so complete as it should be................. Other stupid question, how is the volumeknob secured? A small allen key? :dunno:
