An interesting video that asks some pertinent questions. However, there's a huge mistake (in my opinion), and that is the talk of "the original performance" from about 15.20. The video shows pictures of orchestras at this point, and that illustrates one type of music where there's definitely a performance which can be recorded, but much of the music which people listen to isn't a recording of a live musical event at all. It's been possible for a long time to construct a recording in a studio (or several different studios) by overdubbing, creating electronic sounds, manipulating sounds in unusual ways etc. etc. Take the famous Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys as an example. It was recorded over a period of months in several studios, so does talking about "the original performance" make any sense? Should the album be dismissed as of no musical merit because it is somehow a fake musical performance? Would it have been possible to record it as a single, live performance? In the years since then, building a recording piece by piece has become common practice and arguably essential for certain types of music.
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that "the original performance" is applicable to some types of music, but not all. However, that doesn't mean that "transparency" is a non-requirement when listening to music which has been assembled in a studio. A system which screws up a recording of a live performance will also screw up a studio recording.

You make some great points that are often overlooked. I would say that 99% of the music I listen to has its "original performance" when its played on my stereo.
 
It is great to hear a calm, thoughtful and instructive talk on a controversial topic. One question that occurs to me is will Prof. Hildebrand's analysis cause anyone to analyze and possibly change their own views?

FWIW, following are my opinions.

I want to preface my comments by saying that I don’t compare my credentials with the gentlemen in the two videos: David Hildebrand, and Hans Beekhuyzen. I find both videos thoughtful and worthwhile. With that said, both asked for feedback, and hence my post.

I hope that AK members will pardon the fact that I’ve hurriedly cobbled together content from some of my previous posts. (Some AK members may argue that I’ve repeated my opinions ad nauseum.) :)

The Importance of Defining Goals, Priorities, and Preferences for the Reproduction of Recorded Music in the Home

I propose a $64k question: What are an audiophile’s goals for their hi-fi system(s)? I believe this is a personal choice. Examples of goals include (i.e., by way of example, and not by way of limitation):
  • Recreate the experience of attending a live concert. (I.e., engaging in attentive listening, and falling under a spell cast by the music, in which the listener has the illusion that they’re at the live concert.)

  • Sounds good. E.g., an in-home experience that makes you want to dance – or just makes you smile.

  • Show off to friends, by rattling the windows. (For some, this involves almost causing structural damage to their house.)

  • Some want their hi-fi to reproduce ear-bleed volume levels associated with a live rock concert.

  • For a Hollywood movie, recreate the sound of a buffalo stampede, or a passing freight train or helicopter.

  • Unobtrusive background music, usually while the listener is focused on something else. Some people may have as a goal a pleasant low-volume-level simulacrum that is appropriate for an apartment where one must be considerate of neighbors. (For some people, a decent-quality clock radio suffices for this purpose.)
  • Some like lots of “sparkle” on the high end.

  • Some want to reproduce the natural timbre of orchestral instruments.

  • Some want to reproduce the dynamic range of a large orchestra. (OTOH, for someone who listens mostly to chamber music or a jazz trio, dynamic range may not be as important.)

  • Some may want to reproduce the lowest pedal notes of a pipe organ. OTOH, for someone who listens to folk music, the ability to reproduce powerful deep bass may not be a priority.

  • Etc.
For music reproduced via a hi-fi system, I think that the bottom line is the sound that arrives at the listener’s ear (i.e., in their listening room). What would it mean if someone were to declare a goal that what they hear from their hi-fi be “accurate”? I’ll paraphrase Einstein: “I should load my conscience with grave sins against the sacred spirit of lucidity were I to formulate the aims of sound reproduction in this way, without serious reflection and detailed explanations. Let us proceed to disclose these sins.”

What the listener hears is based on many factors, including the recording, various components such as a front-end equipment, amp, speakers, the acoustics of the listening room, their mood, their consumption of adult beverages, etc.

An amplifier can undergo unit testing (i.e., testing of one component which is part of a larger system) to measure various aspects of its performance. It can be meaningful to discuss an amp’s accuracy against specific parameters being measured (e.g., a specific distortion measurement). However – IMO - this does not necessarily ensure that the sound that arrives at the listener’s ears satisfies the listener’s goals for their hi-fi system.

IMO, the genre of music is an important factor that influences an audiophile’s goals.
  • Those of us who often attend live performances of classical concerts (where there is no use of electronics) know how “natural” orchestral instruments sound. (The same is true of some other genres such as some jazz, folk, big band, etc.)

  • OTOH, what is the natural timber of a digital audio workstation (DAW) software plug-in?
I listen mostly to classical music. My goal for the sound quality of recorded classical music played via my home hi-fi systems is to experience the illusion that I’m in the symphony hall or opera house where classical music was performed live, with no electronics involved (i.e., no sound reinforcement system), and for inevitable deviations to sound pleasant vs. unpleasant – to my ears.

Following is what I mean when I assert that the classical concerts that I attend feature “natural music”, and that the live performance provides a clear benchmark for sound quality:

Classical Symphonic Music vs. Pop Musicians Performing with Orchestra vs. Outdoor Performances

My local symphony orchestra performs a Classical Series, plus a number of “pop concerts”, and a few outdoor concerts.

For the Classical Series – which involves classical music performed live in the symphony hall, there is no use of a sound reinforcement system. I’ve confirmed with the symphony’s Executive Director that the microphones that can be seen hanging above the stage are used solely for recording, NOT for amplifying the sound in the symphony hall. My local symphony hall has world-class acoustics, and the natural sound is amazing.

OTOH, when pop music is performed in the same hall, electronics are often used. An example is when a pop singer uses a microphone to sing. And for some pop concerts, electric guitars and/or electronic organs are sometimes used.

And, on the rare occasion when the symphony performs an outdoor concert (e.g., outdoor Memorial Day concert), then of course a sound reinforcement system must be used.


Opera vs. Musicals

One of the hallmarks of opera is that the singers do NOT use microphones. And the orchestra does NOT use a sound reinforcement system. No electronics are involved when an opera is performed by my local opera company in my local opera house.

OTOH, musicals performed in the same hall typically involve singers using microphones.

And, of course, on the rare occasion when an opera singer performs the National Anthem at the baseball park, then they must sing into a microphone.


Chamber Music

IME, chamber music performances generally do not involve a sound reinforcement system. (I’ve been to one concert by a string quartet that used sound reinforcement because the venue had poor acoustics. I won’t attend another concert at that venue.)​


What is the “work of art”? For classical music, the artists are the composer, the conductor, and the musicians - and IMO the “work of art” was the live performance (i.e., musicians performing together in the symphony hall). I’m using the term “work of art” in terms of what represents a benchmark for the sound quality of the recording when played via a home hi-fi system, not in terms of Intellectual Property law. (The same may be true of other genres that involve natural music performed live, such as some big-band, some jazz, some folk, etc.)

With all due respect to Hans Beekhuyzen, I flatly reject his assertion that “it all starts with the producer and the recording engineer”. For the classical music I love, the producer and the recording engineer are not the artists. (Perhaps I’m unfairly picking apart his statement, in which case I apologize.) IMO, the role of the producer and the recording engineer is to not “muck up” the sound of the live performance in the symphony hall – i.e., do as little harm as possible. While I’m not an expert on recording practices for classical music, I’m not naïve – I imagine that there might be some use of software tools. IMO, the engineers should use a “light touch”, and any editing of the sound should not be conspicuous. The good news is that I own many modern hi-res classical recordings that IMO have excellent, natural-sounding audio quality – and more importantly are very enjoyable. (Pop music is apparently a completely different story …)

Prior to COVID-19 shutting down all non-essential businesses, I attended approximately 30 classical concerts per season. For those of us who regularly attend live classical performances, we have a pretty good memory of what a violin should sound like – independent of whether we were at a particular recording session. We have a pretty good memory of what a string quartet should sound like – and a pretty good memory of how a symphony orchestra should sound – when performing live with no sound reinforcement system. (Recognizing some variance due to the acoustics of the venue, and the listener’s seat location.)

My memory isn’t perfect, and therefore my methodology for assessing the audio quality of my hi-fi systems isn’t perfect. Nonetheless, for classical music, my benchmark for the sound quality of music reproduced via one of my home hi-fi systems is based on my memory of the sound of classical music performed live in its intended venue. I want the inevitable imperfections in the sound from my home-hi-fi to sound pleasant vs. unpleasant. One of my priorities is for the timbre of the orchestra instruments to sound natural. And I want my hi-fi systems to achieve dynamic range that approaches the live concert experience. While my criteria for assessing the quality of the sound from my hi-fi systems isn’t perfect, there is no “circle of confusion” that Hans Beekhuyzen mentions.

OTOH, apparently, some people equate a CD or LP with the work of art, because for some pop music there never was a live-performance.

Consider these questions: What is meant by “accuracy” in sound reproduction? What is meant by “true high-fidelity audio”? (I own several late 1930’s era TOTL tube radios that are “High Fidelity”. It says so right on the front.)

For what genre of music is “convincing 3D fields of sound” and “great imaging” and “spaciousness” relevant? IME, from a mid-hall seat in the symphony hall, the sound is blended by the hall, and there is no pinpoint localization of individual instruments. IME, there are other facets of audio quality that are far more relevant to the reproduction of large-scale classical music, such as dynamic range, frequency range, and natural timbre. This is an example of how an audiophile’s preferred genre of music influences their goals.

Does science currently understand every aspect of human hearing as it relates to the enjoyment of music? (I don’t think so.) Do technologists have tests and specs that define every aspect of human enjoyment of music? (I don’t think so.) And most importantly: What is your benchmark for the quality of sound you are hearing from your home hi-fi system? (Someone else’s benchmark may not be relevant to the music you listen to, and may not be relevant based on your priorities.)

Ask yourself: For the recorded music you will listen to via your home hi-fi system, are you concerned with achieving sound quality that is “musical”, or are you concerned with a theoretical definition of “accurate”? Does someone else’s definition of “accurate” make sense to you?

I regard my hi-fi systems as being “dialed in” when I completely forget about the equipment, and lose track of time, and become completely engrossed in the music, and I can listen for hours without “listener fatigue”. I regard my hi-fi systems as being “dialed in” when I feel like I’m in the symphony hall, or opera house (or other venue for chamber music, such as a church).

I mostly rely on my ears. (My ears are routinely “recalibrated” by listening to live classical music.) I rely on my memory of what I heard at a live classical concert. Clearly relying on my memory of live music has limitations, and therefore my approach has limitations. With that said – IMO - every approach to optimizing a hi-fi system is imperfect.

OTOH - IMO, there is nothing wrong with an audiophile to want their in-home experience when listening to recorded music to “sound good” – which could involve – based on their personal preference -ear-bleed high frequencies, or thumping bass, or pinpoint spatial placement of instruments - regardless of what happened (or never happened) in a live performance. Or, countless other highly personal criteria could be part of an individual audiophile’s goals.

I respect that different people like different music. I am NOT implying that one genre is better than another. What I am saying is that - IMO – the concepts of “high fidelity reproduction”, and “accurate reproduction” – and what “sounds good” - means different things to different people, partly based on the music genre they listen to, and partly based on personal preferences – and therefore different people may have different goals.

In summary, IMO there’s nothing wrong with an audiophile to want their in-home experience when listening to recorded music to “sound good” (“constructivism”), and there’s nothing wrong with another audiophile wanting to recreate a live concert experience (“realism”). In the real world, for many people it’s inevitably a combination of the two, which is why I say that my goal for recordings of classical music is to create the illusion (for me) that I’m in the concert hall (i.e., create an illusion that I’m hearing the original art), and for the inevitable deviations to sound pleasant, vs. unpleasant (to my ears). Because, IMO, no hi-fi system is perfect, and therefore the audiophile must choose sonic trade-offs.

Even for the audiophile whose goal is “realism”, it is inevitable that some level of “constructivism” or “fulfillment of desires” is introduced. It seems to me that low distortion is a necessary-though-not sufficient condition for an enjoyable listening experience. IMO – there’s nothing wrong with “salt and pepper to taste” – i.e., whatever causes the listener the most enjoyment of the music they love.

I agree with Hans Beekhuyzen’s statement that: “Recordings are supposed to please, fascinate, and entertain the consumer, and not the man with the scope”.

Bottom line: I think that it’s important for each audiophile to define their goals for their hi-fi system. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer for someone’s goals. Each audiophile’s goals will vary based on personal preference, and based on the genre(s) of music they listen to. To each their own.

Subjective Response to Recorded Music vs. Measurements

Once you’ve defined your goals, how do you achieve them? Do you mostly rely on your ears, or do you mostly rely on PC software and graphs, and/or published specifications? (Various approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive.)

Some people use a “measurement microphone” and PC software to tune their hi-fi system based on measurements (e.g., flat in-room frequency response). While these tools may have some usefulness, I believe this raises several questions:
  • How do you define “accurate”? Do you believe that a few technical specifications fully characterize the sound of a symphony orchestra, and completely determine the listening enjoyment of recorded music? In other words, do you believe that science completely understands, and can measure, everything associated with human perception of music? Do you think that 100 years from now, scientists will look back and say: “In 2021 they had it all figured out”? If so:
    • What are those specs?
    • How do you measure the sound that arrives at your ears, in your listening room, for these metrics that you assert are comprehensive and definitive in determining audio quality?
    • Is there a “gold standard” for a “measurement microphone” (i.e., a “golden eared” microphone)
    • Is there a “gold standard” for software that is used to analyze the signal from the measurement microphone?
    • How do you calibrate your test equipment? (In other words, how do you determine that your test equipment is “accurate” in measuring the sound in your listening room?)
IMO, not every facet of an individual audiophile’s enjoyment of reproduced music in their home can be reduced to measurements. The following description of a “logical fallacy” is from an internet site that lists more than 100 logical fallacies. (And we all know that if it’s on the internet, it must be true …)

Fallacy of Measurability proposes that if something cannot be measured, quantified and replicated it does not exist, or is "nothing but anecdotal, touchy-feely stuff" unworthy of serious consideration, i.e., mere gossip or subjective opinion. Often, achieving "Measurability" necessarily demands preselecting, "fiddling" or "massaging" the available data simply in order to make it statistically tractable, or in order to support a desired conclusion. Scholar Thomas Persing thus describes "The modernist fallacy of falsely and inappropriately applying norms, standardizations, and data point requirements to quantify productivity or success. This is similar to complex question, measurability, and oversimplification fallacies where the user attempts to categorize complicated / diverse topics into terms that when measured, suit their position.​

I think that in the 1950’s a manufacturer said it clearly: “ … the listening quality of an amplifier is not revealed by its published specifications”.

For anyone who is squarely in the camp of “objectivity”, I have the following question: What measurement reveals why some solid-state amps sound “dry”, and not musically engaging (i.e., compared with some tube amps), even though the amp has published specs that are regarded as excellent?

For those who rely on a microphone and PC software in an attempt to assure themselves that their hi-fi system is “accurate”, I have the following question: After you’ve studied equipment specs, and used technology to tune your system, what is the ultimate arbiter of the audio quality of your hi-fi system – your ears – and your enjoyment of music, or something you’re seeing on a graph on a PC screen?

IMO technology can have an important role in designing and testing hi-fi systems. However – based on my goal of recreating what I remember hearing in the symphony hall – I rely on my ears being the judge, vs. a computer-generated graph. For me, the concept of accuracy is only partially relevant (e.g., an amp with adequate performance specs). My assessment of the audio quality of my hi-fi system is therefore subjective.

IMO: Asking whether a hi-fi system is “accurate” may not be the most meaningful or useful question. Rather than use the term “accuracy”, I think it’s more useful for an audiophile to discuss their “goals” for their hi-fi system, and how well their system is meeting their goals

I have a science and technology background, including my education, and more than 30 years working in a high-tech field (both hardware and software). I’m not anti-technology. I think that technology has an important role in designing hi-fi gear, and can have a role in tuning a system.

IMO, the genre of music is an important factor that influences what is meant by “accuracy”, and influences how much an audiophile weighs their subjective response to recorded music vs. measurements.

I want to be clear that I’m not asserting that one genre of music is better than another – just that different genre place different demands on a hi-fi system.

Many of us know how a violin sounds. (Recognizing some variance in instruments and hall acoustics.) Many of us know how a symphony orchestra sounds when performing in a world-class symphony hall. I’ve read that aficionados of electric guitars recognize the difference in sound quality of different electric guitars, and USA amps (e.g., 6L6GC) vs. British amps (e.g., EL34). (I don’t know about this – this is not in my wheelhouse.) My point is that many of us aren’t dependent on “calibrated mics” and PC-software-generated graphs to tune our hi-fi system, and then accept that the resulting sound is how the music that we love “should” sound.

To illustrate my point, I’ll discuss music for which there never was a live performance – rather, sounds from different sources (some natural, some purely electronic), that were created at different times and places, and were cobbled together by recording engineers. (And in some cases, deliberately distorted.) For such music, it seems to me that the work of art is the master recording. In other words, the master recording is the first time that all of the sounds were heard together, and is based on the wishes of the musicians, producers and engineers. My understanding is that different studios use different speakers and amps, and have different acoustics. Unless you’re using the same amp and speakers that were used to create music for which there was no live performance – and your listening room has acoustics similar to the control booth where the music was electronically created – how do you know that what you’re hearing is what the producers heard? What is your benchmark for how the music “should” sound? What is the natural timbre of a DAW software plug-in? For such music, how would you know if what you’re hearing from your home hi-fi system is “accurate”? For such music, it seems to me that the consumer should focus on what sounds good to them – or perhaps how they imagine the music should sound – or how they wish for the music to sound – which IMO are all reasonable goals if there is not a clear benchmark for how the music “should” sound.

For me - as a classical music lover - charts and graphs are not the final arbiter of faithful reproduction of the natural timbre of orchestral instruments.

For the audiophile who listens to many diverse genres, they may reasonably infer that if their top-quality large-scale classical recordings (for example) sound natural, then their system is “accurately” conveying what the producers of EDM intended.

Apparently different people have different sensitivities to different aspects of sound.
  • Some people are sensitive to spatial presentation.

  • Some are sensitive to the timbre of a violin, or other natural instrument.

  • I’ve heard people talk about the “rhythm” of a hi-fi system. (I have no idea what that means.)

  • I’ve heard people say that they are highly critical of how a brush sounds on a cymbal.

  • Etc.
IMO, no creation of humankind is perfect. No recording is perfect. No hi-fi system is perfect.

Different people have different priorities when selecting the inevitable trade-offs in a hi-fi system. Disagreement is common is this field, and disagreements sometimes involve fundamental (and IMO interesting) conflicts between not only different people’s goals for their hi-fi system, but also different people’s perception of sound.

Enjoyment of Recorded Music vs. State-of the-Art Reproduction

Certainly, recorded music can be enjoyed with less than state-of-the-art recordings and hi-fi systems. Classical music lovers sometimes must decide which is more important: performance quality, or audio quality of a recording. I’m not a music scholar, and I’m not hyper-critical of a performance. Very often I enjoy modern performances of classical music. However, I have no tolerance for poor audio quality. I therefore choose modern performances (i.e., last dozen years or so) of classical music that were recorded in hi-res (e.g., 24bit/192kHz PCM), and delivered in a hi-res format.

Each audiophile must decide how they prioritize the quality of the performance vs. good sound quality.
 
Miscellaneous Thoughts

OP: You discussed the willingness of audiophiles to adjust their environment to improve sound quality (e.g., room “treatment”). My opinion: I choose to have original paintings on my walls, not foam panels. I choose hi-fi equipment that meets my goals (as expressed above) – i.e., a pleasant simulacrum of the concert hall experience - after I’ve decorated my home the way I want. This illustrates my point that different people have different priorities when designing their systems – and different people have different philosophies about the role that reproduced music plays in their life – and how it’s balanced with other interests.

You didn’t discuss the importance of the quality of the recording. An astute audiophile must understand the concept of garbage-in / garbage-out. My preferences for recording technologies:
  1. My favorite is modern performances/recordings (last dozen years or so) that were captured and mastered in hi-res (e.g., 24bit/192kHZ) multi-channel, and delivered on a Blu-ray audio/video disc featuring DTS-HD MA 5.0 (or 5.1) surround-sound. (A few Ultra HD Blu-ray opera recordings are starting to become available.)

  2. My second choice in formats are SACD and Pure Audio Blu-ray that feature surround-sound. (No video.)

  3. My third choice are 24bit/96kHz or 24bit/192kHz FLAC stereo downloads (e.g., HDTracks).
In all cases provenance of the recording is critical – i.e., modern recordings that were captured and mastered as hi-res. (In a few cases high quality analog master tapes have been digitized at hi-res with fairly good results - e.g., some RCA Living Stereo.)

I reject the generalization by Hans Beekhuyzen that “record companies don’t care at all about sound quality”. Some don’t, some do. I own many modern Blu-rays of classical music that have excellent DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio quality (and excellent high-definition video). (Apparently pop music is a different story.)

You don’t discuss the visual component that is available via many modern Blu-ray music recordings (particularly classical). I understand that some people prefer to ignore the visual component of music. For example, some people prefer to listen to an audio-only recording of opera (perhaps because they are primarily aficionados of operatic singing). OTOH, others (including me) feel that the acting and scenery are an important part of an opera’s storytelling, and therefore prefer a Blu-ray audio/video recording. Blu-ray offers another significant benefit for opera: displaying the libretto (in one of several languages) on the HDTV screen.

IMO the visual component of ballet is even more important. However, some people just listen to the ballet’s music.

IMO, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray’s high-resolution video is also very enjoyable for classical orchestral concerts - i.e., seeing the conductor, musicians, and venue. (Blu-ray has enabled me to see many symphony halls and opera houses around the world that I otherwise would have never seen.)

I’m lucky because for the classical music I love there is a wealth of modern hi-res audio/video recordings.

Hi-fi sound reproduction is not limited to 2-channel audio-only recordings. There are countless modern multi-channel recordings, and IMO/IME these can far surpass the enjoyment delivered by 2 channel play-back. YMMV.

Finally, to me there are potentially 2 fundamental facets to hi-fi: enjoying music, and tinkering around with hi-fi equipment. Of course, these are not mutually exclusive.

For people who enjoy tinkering around with hi-fi, there are many ways to enjoy the hobby (many sub-facets), including, but not limited to:
  • Some spend many hours focusing on LPs, or reel-to-reel tapes.

  • Some enjoy cataloging and editing metadata for huge collections of digitized music, and seeking the most beautiful GUI interface, and building playlists, etc.

  • Some are into digital networking, accessing all their music throughout their home by using their smartphone, and accessing their music from anywhere in the world.

  • Some people are interested in vacuum tube technology, and enjoy tube rolling.

  • Some people enjoy using calibrated microphones to measure and plot the sound in their room, and use DSP based gizmos to adjust frequency and delay, and use separate amps for each driver.

  • Some people are interested in DIY (e.g., building their own speakers, or building an amplifier, or restoring old gear).

  • Some like to collect specific types of equipment, or recordings. (I’m kinda, sorta, somewhat guilty of collecting tube amps … because they’re WAY cool …)

  • Etc.
Some people aren’t only looking for the most efficient or effective means to increase the sound quality of their hi-fi. They’re also looking to have fun in the process.

I think that many audiophiles enjoy the intellectual challenge of learning about the many diverse technologies that potentially can be involved in the hobby of hi-fi, from tubes to high-tech network-based systems. (I particularly marvel at those who can design and build tube amps from scratch.)

And, many of us enjoy sharing ideas on AK. And, there is occasionally some “philosophical haymaking”. (And sometimes it’s civil and productive …)

Of course, for most audiophiles the primary focus of the hi-fi hobby is the delivery of the world’s greatest art into the home in a manner that is enjoyable.

Bottom line - IMO

The hobby of “hi-fi” has many facets. Different people bring different perspectives, goals, priorities, and preferences to the hobby. This leads to different people having different “philosophies” about what it means to be an audiophile.

Here’s the opinion that I most wish to convey in my long ramble: IMO, it makes more sense for an audiophile to focus on their goals for their hi-fi system(s) and how well their systems are meeting their goals, vs. worrying about someone else’s definition of “accuracy” or “transparency” or “high fidelity reproduction” – or “The Quest for Absolute Sound”.

IOW, I believe that each audiophile should enjoy the hobby as they wish – i.e., whatever approach causes them the most pleasure.

That’s my 2.5 cents.

However, I do expect the OP to respond. If the OP doesn’t respond to comments on his thread, is he sincere, or … ?
