Audio forum Etiquette

Reverse snobbery?

How about the Reverse of Reverse snobbery; this has been my experience:

I have had very knowledgeable and experienced people give me almost undue respect and help; visiting me, and giving my systems much praise, even though it lacks in many ways. I have made several questionable and probably even stupid posts, but continue to be treated so well.

Many AK'ers could, and do, own any audio gear they want, but go out of their way to give others a nudge in the right direction -- without judgment or ridicule.

As I grow... JansZen, not JanZsen, doh. :smoke:

Thanks to All :thmbsp:

Good thread Alex. I have been a member of this forum for a short while and really like the attitude of the majority of the other members here. I belong to some camera forums too, and if you dare bring up the short comings of any particular camera brand, your ass will get flamed so fast you would think it was on the receiving end of the devil's pitchfork! I feel everyone is entitled to their opinions and sometimes it's nice to have civilized debates about the pros and cons of certain gear. But as others have said, everyone hears things a little differently than others. So what may sound good to them may not sound good to someone else.
I have learned a lot from this forum as I have been out of the audio loop for quite a while. But I'm having fun trying different gear and sounds, which is what makes this hobby so enjoyable for me and others.
To me this forum is more like a brotherhood where everyone is looking out for each other and lending a helping hand where needed.:thmbsp:

No snobbery should be present in a perfect world. This place is not perfect but its all we have. Bottom line is it comes down to manners. Just because a person cannot believe someone else likes a particular piece be it 20 bucks or 20 grand that does not give them the right to **** on someone Else's thread.

Its one thing to state you do not like or understand something. But its another to be down right mean as a good amount of you have been to the people on this site who choose to pay more then 20 or 200 bucks for a piece.

AK was formed to get away from the Aholes who always **** on our vintage postings on other site. Now its reversed. When someone comes here with a few grand or more in their system and just want to talk about it they get crapped on almost immediately. Tolerance people is what this site is all about and we would like you all to remember that please.

I cant help but wonder if the anonymous aspect of the Internet causes some people to be say things they would never say to other folks in person.

Also wonder if people would behave the same online, if their full name, address and a photo was on their profile!

Being a guy who registered here back in 2002 yet really didn't post 'til recently I have found AK to be my favorite forum. I've met some truly GREAT folks just in the short time I've become active here.

Alexkerhead speaks wise words, however the real world differs from our ideas of a perfect utopia.

I was around when most of the vintage gear many crave now was new, and I had a number of pieces I wish I had kept.......however I do remember my experiences both good and bad with some popular pieces here....and I have posted exactly what I heard/had happen with them. However......if that's the piece you lust after......by all means go for it.

I have to keep my tongue in cheek, as I have both vintage systems and a newer, high-dollar rig with some items that raise eyebrows here such as expensive interconnect/speaker wire. I followed a recent thread on interconnect with interest, and it came to the conclusion that I expected, and as some mods/admins have pointed out.....don't knock it if you haven't tried it!

For me, I get as much satisfaction listening to my vintage Nakamichi System One or Kenwood KR-9600 into a pair of a/d/s/ L1590's as my big system. Naturally, there are differences but AFAIC, it's about the MUSIC~!

Bottom line, it doesn't matter if you spent $50 or $50,000......if it makes your foot tap and releives the day's stress then it was money well spent.

Best,

Paul :thmbsp: (Happy to be part of AK)

Thanks for the great replies everyone.
Regards to #9, I don't mean to subside all objections, but think before you post would have been more clear(should have thought about it *_*), because if it really isn't going to generally benefit someone saying something like "I hate this and that" then just think if the post will look out of place or not. 9/10 times it looks like you are trolling.
I am guilty of many of the offenses in this thread, but I am learning and understanding that other people on this site love their gear just as much as I love mine, and I don't like my gear being crapped on.

On another note, I got to see Jessica Simpson's commercial last night on HDNET, and I totally want it.. ^_^

I agree, but let me be the devil's advocate here -- it should be okay to express a negative opinion. There can't be positive opinions without negative opinions. We can't learn our co-forum-readers' opinions unless we learn their dislikes as well as their likes.

It's just that, sometimes there's a better way to phrase things.

Also, it is as much the reader's responsibility not to get offended by a negative opinion about a piece of equipment they own -- you are not your equipment. Just because you happen to like something that someone else hates, doesn't mean they hate you.

Disagreement is okay. Feel free to disagree with me, I'm very agreeable to disagreement.

The world couldn't possibly be a better place without argument.

I tend to agree, however, most of the time, a member craps on a thread instead of offers good advice. There has to be a good motive, not just bashing other people's gear.

Like I said, nobody wants their car to be called crap if they spent time and money on it.
Gotta be a little sensitive to other people's likes and want.

Recommending they "Be on the lookout for this and that" would be a much nicer and less crappy way to state something.
I cannot express how many times I have seen someone go into a n00b's thread and say "omg! i'd sell that and get one of what I have...lalala...hahaha" etc.
Better way to say that is "If I were you, I might be on the lookout for this and that".

Example:
If someone posts with a full set of BPC Pioneer stuff. Instead of saying "Get rid of that crap and get some good stuff" say something like "If you really like pioneer, check out some of their vintage silver faced gear sometime"
Even if you don't like Pioneer(or any other brand), trying to convert someone will usually lead to them not coming here anymore. Conversion must come naturally.
Like grumpy said, common sense.

So yeah, ya get the picture.

Yeah, and being a relative newbie myself, I am guilty to trying to make something that seems funny to me funny to others. I've learned that other people don't always see it the way I do. Great Post. Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa.

I see your point, but I humbly beg to differ. This is what happens with "political correctness", which I am steadfastly against. If someone posts, "how'd I do?" with some BPC, they really need to expect to hear that they didn't do well.

Also, you said that people don't want to hear that what they have is crap. If they don't think is crap, it shouldn't matter if 99,999 people post that it is -- the important thing is that they're happy with it. And the 99,999 people who are posting have to be as okay with this as the one who is defending.

I don't care if all of you hate horribly produced music, if I like the underlying music, I will continue to listen to it. I might agree that it is horribly produced, but I may never disagree that it is unlistenable.

Now, I did say that there are sometimes better ways of phrasing things, but that's not what matters, people need to expect disagreement. You don't always have to have the last word, and things don't always have to be resolved. Frustration is a normal human state. People need to accept that.*

*Note the irony there.

Subs? I like Sunfire. There's at least one person here who has to crap on Carver's name every time I mention it. I (eventually) let it go. I've stated my opinion, they've stated theirs, that has to be the end of it.

I plead guilty as charged. :sigh:

It's not only a newbie thing, I'm guilty of it myself. It gets hard to communicate intent with a keyboard sometimes.

I agree with your basic premise, however, this is just a forum. Its my favorite forum, but its just that. It doesn't have to be serious all the time. It seems as if any opinion or comment is in danger of hurting someone's feelings recently.

When making fun of some anonymous guy in a posted picture, in good fun, offends then some folks take this forum way too seriously.

When having an opinion on a shipper results in two weeks of insulting PM's from one member to me, somebody takes this forum too seriously.

I think rule 11 should be as follows:

"Everyone is sensitive and has right to have their feelings not hurt. Being that other's opinions can hurt their feelings, no more opinions should be expressed."

That should resolve all the problems.

I realize that was tongue in cheek, but, uhhh.... NO.
Real rights are serious business, and not to be cheapened with touchy, feely PC baloney

Um, Steve Hoffman is a long way from "Some anonymous guy".

Here is my my take on rule #9:

If a thread says something to the effect of "I just scored speaker X, I love it, I am happy as a clam!" then just STFU if you don't like it.

If someone starts a thread like "I have a chance to buy speaker X, what do you think?" then by all means fire away.

Disagreeing is a way of life. It all goes back to what i mentioned about manners.

My old signature was something like

" Its my opinion. Don't like it ? Get your own"

Threads where people have crapped on someone else's stuff look dirty to me and make me cringe.

I understand the need to feel non-conformist, but using that as an excuse to cut down other people's stuff shouldn't be so.

You can state things much nicer than "omg! that thing blowz0rz, get the same thing I own". Example, say something to the order of "That equipment should be fine for normal litening, but you need something nicer to thoroughly enjoy so and so".
Being blunt on a place like AK comes off as arrogant and rude. Even if the intention was to help, you still look like a big a-hole saying things that just don't help the matter. IMO of course.
I know, i've been there as victim and antagonist.
Truth be told, people don't sign up at AK to be told their stuff is garbage.. Plain and simple.

If someone asks "How did I do with my so and so" and it isn't a nice unit, just say something to the order of "You are on the right track, but I recommend you be on the lookout for something nicer" Right track being that they ARE interested in audio.

But saying something like "that thing is sh!t, buy exactly what I own, because I pwn" IS arrogant and rude.

My two cents...

I think most people come here for one or both of these two reasons:

1) to try and get a worthwhile opinion from those ''in the know'', either from personal experience or skilled knowledge...

2) to join a community and share their own experiences and get somewhat of an approval on the gear they already own... kinda like belonging to a car club of some kind. Would you get put down by another member of such a club? Or put another member down? Didn't think so.

Happy Holidays everyone!
