it should be okay to express a negative opinion. There can't be positive opinions without negative opinions. We can't learn our co-forum-readers' opinions unless we learn their dislikes as well as their likes.

It's just that, sometimes there's a better way to phrase things.

Disagreement is okay. Feel free to disagree with me, I'm very agreeable to disagreement.

I agree with you. Negative opinions don't mean that they're necessarily diminishing, they can also be constructive. It's all in the wording!

Although I have only met Retro, Army and Echowars in person, I feel like I "know" a lot of people here. It has the feel of family to me and that is why it is a daily ritual for me. I think it can retain it's appeal if those of us that really care protect what makes this place so special, support the mods and give a few bucks now and then.

Threads where people have crapped on someone else's stuff look dirty to me and make me cringe.

I understand the need to feel non-conformist, but using that as an excuse to cut down other people's stuff shouldn't be so.

No one is saying anything about all conforming. What makes one person cringe does not to all.

You can state things much nicer than "omg! that thing blowz0rz, get the same thing I own". Example, say something to the order of "That equipment should be fine for normal litening, but you need something nicer to thoroughly enjoy so and so".

Show where this is being said daily on AK ! You make it out to be that this is happening every day on AK. If it does happen its definately not the norm.

Being blunt on a place like AK comes off as arrogant and rude. Even if the intention was to help, you still look like a big a-hole saying things that just don't help the matter. IMO of course.
I know, i've been there as victim and antagonist.
Truth be told, people don't sign up at AK to be told their stuff is garbage.. Plain and simple.

I happen to be a very blunt person. Will I change for you? If I have not for 2 wives I sure as hell won't for you or anyone else on this site. Now I realize this post is not about me but it is about 19K members who are people and we do not expect to change even one of them.

Now what I find as arrogant is when others tell others how to act. This reminds me of a certain lady who i do not care for who constantly preaches to the nation that it "it takes a village to" Bullshit ! Take responsibility for what you say, write and especially for what you do in life. Were not here to preach as you are making this out to be. Were an audio site plain and simple...

If someone asks "How did I do with my so and so" and it isn't a nice unit, just say something to the order of "You are on the right track, but I recommend you be on the lookout for something nicer" Right track being that they ARE interested in audio.

But saying something like "that thing is sh!t, buy exactly what I own, because I pwn" IS arrogant and rude.

Again I think you are putting words in peoples mouth. But if I were to lay that "your right on track" line on someone who i thought made a poor choice I would be lying to myself if I did not tell the person how I really felt when they asked ! If they ask my opinion then they better be ready to get an honest opinion. People did not come to AK to be sugar coated..

Bottom line is to have some respect. It goes a long way.

It all boils down to common sense, treat others as you would like to be treated.

Negative opinions are fine as long as they are directed at the piece of gear and not the person behind the post.

In my short time here I have seen many good natured ribbing posts, but I have also seen a few that crossed over the lines in my opinion. :scratch2:

You better be joking, mister...

or my feelings will be VERY hurt. And I'll spread my pain by singing "Feelings.' I think I'll start on Merv Griffin and end on the Mike Douglas show. I'll try to squeeze in Johnny and Dick Cavett. The whole Feelings Tour.

I've noticed that most people are making fun of themselves as often as they are poking fun at others.

And more important than that, we are usually talking about THINGS here.
Most of us have lots of THINGS. If somebody belittles one of your things, just think about one of your other favorite things, and then you won't feel, so bad. (I wouldn't have put the comma there, but it's in the song.)

Good counterpoint, Dew

I think rule 11 should be as follows:

"Everyone is sensitive and has right to have their feelings not hurt. Being that other's opinions can hurt their feelings, no more opinions should be expressed."

That should resolve all the problems.

I believe this is a thread that needed to be posted. Manners is a dying art in our world today, just look at the way people drive or act in line at the store. As others have said, the attention to manners here at AK is one of the reasons I stay. As far as #9 goes, my opinion is that the phrase IMHO goes a long way. I have my opinions about equipment but they are just that, opinions. I want to come to AK to share those opinions because no one in my world could give a crap about a Sansui Model 8 or a Pioneer SA 9500II and it does me good to hear from people about their likes and dislikes. I respect someones reasons for not liking what I like and do not mind hearing about it. I like to hear why. I don't like when I see someone told there equipment is no good because the poster does not like it. Voicing opinions is what AK is about. Predjudicial criticism is not and snobbery has no place here.

I like it here and plan to stick around. I hope to add to the knowledge base here with what little I know. I hope to continue to gain from the knowledge base here and express my opinions with a bit of sensitivity for others feelings and opinions. I plan to still call stuff BPC when I recognize it as such, even if I own it myself, which I do. Also I probably will never buy anything made by Yorx :D ,but I won't criticize you if you do. It's your money.:thmbsp:

"10. No piece of audio gear is crap, as long long as somebody likes it."

I guess that explains why Bose is still in business.

I'm just happy to be a part of this site. I hope I never say anything here to offend anyone. I think everybody has to remember, opinions are like... well.. you know..., everybody has one. It doesn't make them right. There are some great discussions on this site and great knowledge to be shared. I think everybody here should be treated with great respect. I mean, to everybody else. we're all kind of freaks. We should all embrace our audio brothers... OR, we could all just run with the rest of the crowd and go buy bose wave radios.
Just a thought.

I'm new here, so I feel kinda weird weighing in on this, but I will anyway. There was a book written a few years ago called "Everything I need to know I learned in kindergarden". You know, stuff like, be nice to your neighbor, respect older people, share your toys, pick up after yourself. You get the picture, I'm sure. I'm sure most people had parents who told them then same kinda stuff. Somewhere along the line, we forgot all about that, and as a result, we need to be reminded to be humans again.

This forum has been invaluable to me so far. Thanks guys...

A famous quote comes to mind... mainly for the married folks out there...

"I'm a man, I can change, if I have to, I guess..." :D

You do not have a right to not be offended.

Having said that, I don't go out of my way to offend people. Most people on this site seem to be the same.

The Red Green Show

Good stuff, Scott, been watching it on and off for years (when I remember it's on). Our kids like it, too. All the way down from the 31 yr. old to the 10 yr. old.

Lets all hold hands and sing kum bai ya.
I'm sorry there's a lot of lousy audio gear out there. Not pointing that out would be wrong no matter who's feelings get hurt.
I don't believe anyone should be rude but pretending Concept, Sanyo, and Sound Design is decent doesn't help anyone.
Now it's time for a group hug and a cleansing cry.

I was once the owner of a BOSE Lifestyle DVD surround system. It looked good, and was very good to listen to. Not fatiguing, not sharp, `bassy' or distorted, just good. I didn't buy it, or steal it; my wife won it on an Ebay competition some two years ago, about this time of year. This piece of `crap' as informed opinion would have us all call Bose, had 5 very small very accurate surround speakers plus a decent sub and I repeat, sounded very good both for listening to radio, stereo or full surround. I wonder how many of those who profess to loath Bose have actually heard one.............. Jim.

PS. We sold it a few weeks after the competition. Make of that what you will; maybe it looked out of place:D .

Well, there are various ways of expressing your opinion - ones that make someone else feel like the target probably aren't the best ones.

BTW, I used to own some Sanyo Plus Series components (tuner, preamp, poweramp) that were pretty damned good. Painting with a broad brush is usually a bad idea.

Years ago, when I still thought I could make enough money to eat as an artist, I attended art school. Critique of one's own work is painful, especially if you're over-invested in that work (which is quite easy to do)...

I think one of the commonest mistakes people make (me too) is to become too invested in their possessions. No matter how nice your audio gear, car(s), home or jewelry may be, they're not you, and by extention an attack on your "stuff" is not necessarily an attack on your person.

It's when a responding post attacks the person heing responded to, that I grow tired of, and even angry at the responder. I don't care one whit if a person responding to a post about my gear says; "What a hunk of crap", it's when the response goes; "What a hunk of crap, and you're an idiot for buying it!", that I get upset.

Well I never thought I would hook someone with Sanyo. It just shows you there is a product for all tastes.
The good news is you could corner the market on all those fine Sanyo Plus Series components and still have change left over from a fifty.
