Audiokarma is being reborn - Vbulletin upgrade

Im sorry Frannie but I dont like things GETTING WORSE!!

Because the majority of ppl dont realise how good something is they have today, thats how brainwashed they are...... They get rid of something beautiful and replace it with crap...... Its very sad.....

I know my comments wont stop them from doing it but I just cant stand everything good in this world being replaced with trash and ppl thinking its better.... (Anything, not just vbb)

THIS SOFTWARE IS MUCH BETTER than the latest over bloated stuff out now!!

WHY DOES EVERY SITE HAVE TO BE OVER BLOATED,HAVE HEAVY GRAPHICS,ETC.......

Im sorry to my friends here... If Im making anyone mad,im sorry..... Sometimes I speak quite loud when something is important to me........

Im sorry Frannie....

it's because after a while everything AROUND the old software gets updated and it begins to not work as well as it once did, so it has to be replaced.

According to Newman, the only known ramification of this upgrade is that Jaymana's post count will be reduced by ~35%. I ask you, AK community, does not that fact alone make worthwhile this migration?

Two days! Many of us have not been forced to surf porn sites for two days straight. It could permanently damage some people. Does your liability insurance cover that. :scratch2: May the converion run smoothly. :thmbsp:

Take your time. Have a written plan with numbered steps.

Take lots of backups. Make sure the backups are good before starting. Write out a recovery plan before starting, and make sure you have everything you need to carry it out.

Yes, I spent 35 years in IT!

This SW works well!!

And There is other SW they could goto THAT ISNT AS BAD AS VB4+

IPB is one.... IPB is MUCH BETTER then what VBB has become..

I envision a vintage vs modern software thread being born.

Hope it won't take longer then the allotted time

Un-needed.... THE SITE IS FINE ON THIS!!

WHY MESS WITH SOMETHING THATS BEEN WORKING?????????

As Wardsweb said a few pages ago, you don't get to see the hacks, patches, and McGyver-esque fixes that keep this place going. The fact that you don't is a testament to the genius and work ethic of that man. How about we let him decide whether this site is fine or not?

As for the situation in general, I'm looking forward to a weekend off. :D

This is very sad......

Grumpy told me years ago not to worry about going to VB4+,he didnt like it either....

I guess I wont be coming here anymore..... VB4 and higher is ugly, slower and a disgrace to vbulletin....

Very sad.......

Yes it IS A MAJOR CHANGE!!

GOING FROM SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL TO GARBAGE!!

Un-needed.... THE SITE IS FINE ON THIS!!

WHY MESS WITH SOMETHING THATS BEEN WORKING?????????

Please note the very simple and prudent answer.

What you don't see are the security issues and the amount of work done behind the scenes to keep AK running without tons of spammers.

Dude, despite how it appears things are working just swimmingly for you on the front end, there's a great deal of "unneeded" maintenance and policing done on the back end to keep up that appearance with the current dated version of VB.

They're not doing this simply for cosmetic reasons mate. The mission here is to seal up some known security holes/hassles and make the administrative chores much easier. Just another leg up thwarting the innumerable number of spambots is reason alone. But, you never see or have to deal with this--hence you have no idea and speak flippantly.

Relax man, after a few bumps no one will have died and it'll all be just fine.

:thmbsp: On point and more succinctly said than what I was typing as you posted.

2 days without AK? What to do, what to do? Oh, buy more gear and post it on the 9th.

could be a whole lot more AK'ers out this weekend if they're offline.

So he'll have to work doubletime to get back on top. Say by the end of the year?

Do you think we should come back to AK gradually, say over a few days to a week, while stuff is being sorted out operationally? I mean, if everyone who's been off and jonesing, then all came back on on the first day, we might be stressing and overwhelming the system.

Maybe we need an odd-even birthday alignment for a day or two or longer to give the site a chance to breath?

Whatever happens, thanks so much to the admins, site maintainers, and hosting services, plus the mods for all you do to keep AK running so transparently well.

As a suggestion to Wardsweb...

I am in the camp of thinking that AK is very nice just like it is. I especially like the easy layout and change will be difficult. However, I know enough about IT to understand the change and why, and am in full support.

There likely will be a rush of users once AK is back online. If the changes are dramatic, the crush can be even more consuming of resources.

A controlled user entry plan may be appropriate. A well designed introductory thread, with basic user information and site map would also make the transition easier for the users. A basic write-up on visual settings and User CP alterations will help to stem the inevitable questions that will arise.

Best wishes for a smooth upgrade and a heartfelt thank-you for all of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into making AK the best place on the web. :thmbsp:

Well, I've been dithering over whether to drive a couple of hundred miles each way to go to a hamfest on the 7th.

I guess the decision has been made for me. Good luck with the upgrade, folks!:thmbsp:

"The only constant is change. When you're done changing, you're done."

Thank you to all the folks that keep this ship afloat. Most of us users haven't a clue as to what it takes or what you have to deal with on a daily basis. If you say we need an upgrade, that's good enough for me.

Coincidence that we're "springing ahead" on the 8th?

...Chapeau AK Administrators...

+1 :thmbsp::thmbsp:

I just have one question.

Does this mean I'll have to buy The White Album again?

AK can't be that important to you. You aren't a subscriber.

Good luck with the big weekend :) Though I am going thru some withdrawals already, I'm sure the result will be great. And the fact that there are thousands of members on AK and you are only losing one? That works for me ;)

Hiya,

AK can't be that important to you. You aren't a subscriber.

Well to be fair .. quite a few non subscribers (I would argue the majority) are of great benefit to AK as far as helping others.

Frannie
