How do you know what Iv'e considered? Have you ever heard MQA through a Meridian Explorer 2 with a dedicated power supply? My system sounds very good to ME and everybody else that has heard it.
E-Stat, You should really consider changing your approach and try to not cast judgement on budget conscious audiophiles that enjoy what they have regardless of how much money they may have spent. Try considering what that persons particular goal is and what he/she is willing to invest to achieve that goal.
If you want to buy me a Topping/Schitt/Maverick or any DAC; Please feel free to. I need a full rendering and decoding 192/24 MQA DAC with an apodising filter to lessen digital audio pre-ringing and none of those you stated above fulfill that need, but the Meridian Explorer2 does.
Edit: Oh yeah, my Meridian Explorer2 DAC was not $200. It was only $139 new with factory 5 year warranty and free shipping.

In advance of Microsoft terminating support for Win7 in January, I recently replaced my old desktop with a Mac Mini. While I use LMS and endpoints in the main music systems, the desktop feeds the office/around house system. It delivers fine 24 bit performance via analog headphone output.
I have no interest purchasing something that would provide only a lateral change. Much less worse performance than what's already there as Abe discovered! I might try using the garage's DAC to see if such would make a meaningful difference for the modest gear used in the office.
Most likely, I'll continue to use the onboard unit.

My new "audiophile" steel braided, RFI/EMI shielded, 24 gauge, 4 individually shielded twisted pair OFC conductors, CAT7 50 foot Ethernet cable arrived in the mail today. The new cable was substantially thicker with better shielding compared to my old unshielded CAT5e.
I ran the Ethernet line from my ISP router down through my basement and hooked the other end of the CAT7 Ethernet cable directly to my music PC.
The Test:
I alternated between the old CAT5e and the new CAT7 Ethernet cable on back of PC for the test.
I streamed Don Broco~ Technology 24bit/96kHz Hi-Res from TIDAL.
The initial results to my surprise were:
Bass was more defined with drums having a greater punch.
Vocals seemed more organized; Fast paced vocals were more easily understood.
Music generally sounded clearer with greater separation and a bit more detail.
I need to do a blind study to further substantiate my claims. My initial test results though are somewhat promising and will update this after a blind study. Now it’s time to Enjoy The Music!

I am investing in an fiber optic network bridge to connect my ISP modem to my dedicated HTPC that is located about 30 ft away. Cleaning the data pipe is supposed to eliminate any network RF and line noise by galvanic isolation of the electrical connection with a light connection. The final result is supposed to be more than subtle when streaming hi-res audio from Tidal or Qobuz. I will report back with final outcome.
